  23.      _R_n_e_w_s accepts news from standard input and spools it up  for
  24.      processing,  space permitting.  If space is persistently too
  25.      short, _r_n_e_w_s looks for the  file  /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_n_e_w_s/_r_n_e_w_s._s_t_a_l_l;
  26.      if  it  is  present, _r_n_e_w_s waits patiently for more space to
  27.      appear, while if it is absent, _r_n_e_w_s discards the  news  and
  28.      reports this.

  30.      _C_u_n_b_a_t_c_h is a historical synonym  for  _r_n_e_w_s;  there  is  no
  31.      difference in what they do.

  33.      _N_e_w_s_s_p_o_o_l is the actual  spooling  program.   It  creates  a
  34.      spool  file  with  a  name  based on the current time (which
  35.      avoids the need  for  locking)  in  the  spooling  directory
  36.      /_u_s_r/_s_p_o_o_l/_n_e_w_s/_i_n._c_o_m_i_n_g   and  copies  the  input  _f_i_l_e(s)
  37.      (standard input default) to it, stripping off  any  `####!!!! ccccuuuunnnn----
  38.      bbbbaaaattttcccchhhh'  or  `####!!!! cccc7777uuuunnnnbbbbaaaattttcccchhhh' header as it does so.  If invoked
  39.      with the ----iiii option, when finished it attempts to start _n_e_w_s_-
  40.      _r_u_n  to  process the new news immediately.  _R_n_e_w_s invokes it
  41.      this way if and only if the  file  /_u_s_r/_l_i_b/_n_e_w_s/_r_n_e_w_s._i_m_m_e_d

  44.      _N_e_w_s_r_u_n should be run periodically (e.g. by _c_r_o_n(8)) to pro-
  45.      cess   spooled  news.   _N_e_w_s_r_u_n_n_i_n_g  can  be  used  to  turn
  46.      _n_e_w_s_r_u_n's processing off and on if it is  desired  to  avoid
  47.      major  news  processing  during certain hours.  `nnnneeeewwwwssssrrrruuuunnnnnnnniiiinnnngggg

  51.      start  a  new  _n_e_w_s_r_u_n).   Without  an argument, _n_e_w_s_r_u_n_n_i_n_g

  74.      _r_e_l_a_y_n_e_w_s fails, _n_e_w_s_r_u_n reports this (by  mail  to  uuuusssseeeennnneeeetttt)
  75.      and  attempts to save the spooled batch in the _b_a_d subdirec-
  76.      tory for human inspection.  To bound the accumulation in _b_a_d
  77.      in  the event of some systematic problem, _n_e_w_s_r_u_n limits _b_a_d
  78.      to 50 files; this default can be changed by placing a  _l_i_m_i_t
  79.      file  in  _b_a_d,  containing  one  ASCII line with the desired
  80.      numeric limit.  A limit of 0  will  prevent  saving  of  bad

  107.      ism.  It hasn't been tested very well in the C News environ-
  108.      ment.  _B_d_e_c_o_d_e (see _n_e_w_s_m_a_i_l(8)) is probably better for most
