Here are the timings I've clocked to help you decide which lister to use.
Sorting a huge HD FFS directory with 247 filenames (12-20 chars each)
timed with a Swiss Made Tradition Stop Watch (with 10th of a second
precision) and timed 12 attempts for each and then averaged,
on a 640 x 200 standard Workbench 1.3 screen, full window, ARP,
and with FastFont cleanII.

WB1.3:

newlist6^ 5.4 secs 15.0 secs
ls-4.11jr -al 6.3 secs 15.0 secs 11504
^: if you create a custom print string EXACTLY like ls-4.11jr
(see docs for -F example or use included lsjr alias), the times
are exactly the same! My ls style has the year thrown in.
More to print = more time.
Note2: Newlist times. Each new version adds cubic tons of new things,
yet the times still tend to get better! :-)

Note: Don't flame me if you don't like the times. Each time has been
taken at least a dozen times apiece to get the most accurate time.
Also note my setup above. If you use Interlace, a smaller window,
non-fast fonts, have >68000, or are reading floppy disks, your
times will vary greatly compared to mine.
Newlist has more options!
o Complete WB2.0 support including the needed link support.
o Date ** Construction **
o Print kit ** Construction **
o Recursion
o Multiple paths
o a Quick display and Quick Display with file sizes
o ENV: support
o Character Filters (ie only dirs g-l lowercase only)
o Group Displays
o UNIX complex wildcards
o Very fast sort routines
o Variety of sorts by date, name, comment, and size
o Flags, Flags, and more flags!
o Support for CUSTOMIZED versions.
Now that we know what the best lister is, let's send a Tuitionware Buck!
