  11.    I. Introduction

  13.    Welcome to CDTV-Player 1.8
  14.  
  15.    The idea for this program came up to me, as I was sitting in front of 
  16.    my CDTV and wanted to listen to some music and do some work at the 
  17.    same time. There is the possibility to press the play button while
  18.    working on Workbench, but nothing else than the track number will be
  19.    displayed. The other possibility to play Audio-CD's was to forget 
  20.    multitasking and use the built-in player-screen. I thought that 
  21.    this was quite lousy. In the German magazine 'AMIGA-DOS' I found a 
  22.    little program by Dr. Peter Kittel of Commodore - Germany in AMIGA-BASIC. 
  23.    This program looked more like a C-64 program with a lot of PEEKS and 
  24.    POKES. So I translated it into KICK-PASCAL (Lines in AmigaBasic vs 
  25.    Lines in Kick-Pascal = 200 vs 15) and designed a Workbench-Interface
  26.    (September 1992). This program is FREEWARE. Commodore may even include 
  27.    this program into the original CDTV-package or bundle it with every CD-ROM.   
  28.    If you use this program for commercial matters, please don't forget to 
  29.    mention my name.

  31.    II. Features
  32.  
  33.    CDTV-Player 1.8 features quite a lot of new options. First of all I
  34.    added preferences in order to keep the program user-friendly (this will
  35.    be extended in future versions). Then I've programmed a routine that
  36.    recognizes the CD if it's in the archive (thanks to Frédéric Botton - Paris 
  37.    for his «Gimme_a_CD»-program and the idea). Then I've introduced
  38.    a SHUFFLE function and an option to jump to seconds BACK and FORTH.
  39.    In earlier version only owners of a CD-ROM-drive could use the program.
  40.    Now everybody with an AMIGA has access to the archive in order to search 
  41.    for a song or just have a look at the program. I've included now an 
  42.    option called KARAOKE. If any lyrics are found in the archive they may
  43.    be displayed on-screen.

  46.    III. Gadgets
  47.  
  48.    Here's a short explanation of the gadgets.
  49.  
  50.    REW     : Decreases track number.
  51.    PLAY    : Plays current track.
  52.    FF      : Increases track number.
  53.    PAUSE   : Pauses play.
  54.    STOP    : Stops play.
  55.    FADE    : Fades smoothly in/out.
  56.    LIVE    : Automatic fade in at the beginning of a track and automatic 
  57.              fade out a the end.
  58.    SINGLE  : Toggles between playing one song and the whole CD.
  59.    REPEAT  : Toggles between playing once or multiple times.
  60.    BACK    : Jumps two seconds back.
  61.    SCAN    : Scans into every song on the CD.
  62.    FORTH   : Jumps two seconds forth.
  63.    SECRET  : Future options.
  64.    KARAOKE : Live on-screen Karaoke (See V. KARAOKE).
  65.    SHUFFLE : Toggles between normal and shuffled play.
  66.    PROGRAM : Choose an order of play of your own.
  67.    PREFS   : Access to internal preferences.
  68.    EDIT    : Opens edit window (See IV. EDIT).
  69.    DISPLAY : Toggles display-mode:
  70.              1. Track time played.
  71.              2. CD time played.
  72.              3. Remaining track time.
  73.              4. Remaining CD time.
  74.              5. No display (saves processing time).
  75.              Modes 3&4 accessible only with SINGLE off.
  76.    INFO    : Displays information.

  78.    On the right side of the window there is a proportional gadget for
  79.    the volume.

  82.    IV. Edit

  84.    WARNING: Not yet fully operational, but under heavy construction.

  86.    By pressing the EDIT-Gadget in the main window, another window will be 
  87.    opened and you'll get access to the archive. In earlier version you had
  88.    to choose the CD you wanted to listen to from here. But this is done now
  89.    automatically, so you can only have a look at the archive now. If CDTV-
  90.    Player does not find the CD in the archive, you've got the possibility to
  91.    add this CD to the archive.

  94.    V. Karaoke
  95.  
  96.    When pressing the KARAOKE-Gadget in the main window, the program searches
  97.    for the lyrics of the actual song. If found in the archive, they will be
  98.    displayed on a seperate screen, while playing the song. At the moment 
  99.    there aren't any special effects, but I'm going to do this in the near
  100.    future (all ideas are welcome). If you want to create own KARAOKE-songs,
  101.    have a look at 'lyrics:depeche mode.mx' (the only complete one, since I'm
  102.    too lazy to key in all lyrics).

  105.    VI. Archive
  106.  
  107.    WARNING: Format of archive is still under heavy construction. Please do 
  108.             not assume that future versions will support the actual format
  109.             of the archive.

  111.    The archive is divided actually into two parts. The first part includes
  112.    the group names and the CD titles, CD time, number of tracks (e.g. Brian 
  113.    Adams, Waking up the neighbours,74:54.38|15). In earlier version I 
  114.    omitted the fractions of the second and the number of tracks, but that was
  115.    not very precise for finding the right CD in the archive and so I had to 
  116.    include them, too. Have a look at Lyrics/A-ZMusix in order to learn
  117.    how to build own archives. The second part of the archive consists of 
  118.    the group-files with the track titles and the lyrics.

  121.    VII. The future
  122.  
  123.    I'll include a function called COPY, which will simplify the COPY
  124.    of CD's to a cassette. You'll just key in the exact amount of time you
  125.    want to be copied and the program will select the songs in order to
  126.    match your timing (or as close as possible).

  128.    If the program works with the A570/A670 CD-ROM-Drives, I would introduce
  129.    an AREXX-Port. This would enable other programs to use the functions
  130.    of the CDTV-Player for their own use (for example Multi-Media-
  131.    Applications).

  133.    I'll try to use PARNET for my program in order to use e.g. an AMIGA 4000
  134.    for KARAOKE while playing from CDTV (i.e. more & faster effects).

  140.    VIII. Source-Code

  142.    You can get the source-code for free, if you write to me and send a disk.
  143.    Suggestions and ideas are welcome. New groups for the archives are also 
  144.    welcome. CDTV-Player was written in KICK-PASCAL 2.12.

  147.    IX. Assigns
  148.  
  149.    For the moment, you'll have to do one ASSIGN in order to be able to 
  150.    load the Archive (I'm sorry). For example, if you've got the directory 
  151.    CDTV-Player in DF1:, then ASSIGN Lyrics: DF1:CDTV-Player/Lyrics. I've 
  152.    included a script for this purpose.
