- CDROM-Summaries
- (Updated 3/25/94)
-
- This file summarizes the different CD-ROM distributions that are
- either currently available or currently planned.
-
- ---------
- FreshFish
- ---------
-
- Goals
-
- o Provide users with the very latest freely redistributable
- material in a timely manner, I.E. within 1-2 months of it's
- release or submission to me.
-
- o Provide users with a set of useful utilities that is
- updated on each CD-ROM so that users do not have to
- continually try to keep up to date with the latest versions
- of utilities, libraries, and other material that they use
- frequently.
-
- o Provide material that is ready to run directly off the
- CD-ROM rather than having to unpack archives or otherwise
- consume precious hard drive space.
-
- o Provide the newly released material in a BBS-ready form
- so that BBS owners can make it available to their users
- as soon as possible.
-
- Frequency of Publication
-
- o Published approximately every 1-2 months.
-
- Structure
-
- o A single CD-ROM with approximately 200Mb+ allocated to
- newly released material, 200Mb+ allocated to useful
- utilities that are updated on each release, and the
- remainder of 200Mb or less, filled on a space available
- basis with previously published material.
-
- Target Market
-
- o Those users that want the very latest material as soon
- as possible, and want the material in a convenient to
- use form.
-
- ----------
- FrozenFish
- ----------
-
- Goals
-
- o Provide users with a convenient source of freely
- distributable material that has been released in
- the last 6 to 8 months.
-
- o Provide the material only in archived form, so as to
- make maximal use of the available space. I.E. squeeze
- as much material on the CD-ROM as possible.
-
- Frequency of Publication
-
- o Published approximately every 6 to 8 months, I.E.
- after every 3rd or 4th FreshFish CD-ROM.
-
- Structure
-
- o A single CD-ROM containing only archives.
-
- Target Market
-
- o Users that are interested in freely redistributable
- software, but are not too concerned about having it in
- a convenient form. They are willing to wait up to 6-8
- months for new material and are also willing to unpack
- it from the CD-ROM and go through whatever setup is
- necessary to use it.
-
- --------
- GoldFish
- --------
-
- Goals
-
- o Provide users with a longterm archive of the entire
- 1000 floppy collection.
-
- o Provide all 1000 floppies in both archived and unarchived
- form.
-
- o Provide utilities and a database to make it easy to
- find specific material or types of material.
-
- o Provide utilities to recreate specific floppy disks from
- the CD-ROM archive.
-
- Frequency of Publication
-
- o Published only one time, upon completion of the floppy
- library to disk 1000.
-
- Structure
-
- o A 2 CD-ROM set, with the first volume containing floppy
- disks 1-1000 in archived form plus approximately 1-250 in
- unarchived form, and the second volume containing the
- remaining disks (251-1000) in unarchived form.
-
- Target Market
-
- o Anyone that would like a longterm archive of my complete
- 1000 floppy disk library.
-
- ===========================================================================
-
- Some things to note are that only the FreshFish CD-ROM will contain all the
- GNU utilities and other useful utilities already set up and ready to run
- directly off the CD-ROM, thus saving hundreds of megabytes of hard disk
- space.
-
- Even though there is significant overlap in coverage of material between the
- FreshFish and FrozenFish CD-ROM's, they present the material in vastly
- different ways and are targetted at different types of users.
-
- The GoldFish CD-ROM is a "one-time CD-ROM" that has no signficant connection
- to the FreshFish or FrozenFish CD-ROM's. After it's release, future
- FreshFish and FrozenFish CD-ROM's will no longer contain the contents of
- "fish disks" 1-1000 organized on a per disk basis.
