// ********* Revenant Readme File ********
// -------------------------------------------------
// Revenant - Copyright 1999 Cinematix Studios, Inc.
The following is the Readme file for the Public Demo version of "Revenant".
This demo includes a fully playable mini-version of the game. The demo consists of a few houses made from
a small portion of the town, the forests, and a full level from the caves area.
Starting the game:
1. Select Revenant Launcher from the Start Menu
2. Select Run Game from the launcher
3. Select appropriate display device from the launcher
(There is a bug with this. If you have ever changed your Primary Video card the old one will be
listed instead. Don't worry, it is still going to use whatever card is in your machine as the
Primary).
4. Select full-screen or windowed mode from the launcher
5. Select Start Game from the launcher
6. Select New Game from the Revenant Main Menu
CONTROL REFERENCE:
Throughout the description of the interface, we will refer to mouse clicks as the following:
L Click- Click once with the Left Mouse Button
R Click- Click once with the Right Mouse Button
L Hold- Click and hold with the Left Mouse Button
R Hold- Click and hold with the Right Mouse Button
Double Click- Click twice rapidly with the Left Mouse Button
GAMEPAD
Revenant supports gamepads with up to 8 buttons.
To move your character push the gamepad's directional controller in the direction you want to move. Your
character will rotate to that direction and start walking.
The buttons work as follows:
With Weapon Out:
JOY1: Attack Thrust
This is the weakest attack. It does the least amount of damage, but uses the least amount of Fatigue.
JOY2: Attack Swing
This is the typical attack. It does an average amount of damage, and uses up an average amount of Fatigue.
JOY3: Attack Chop
This is the heaviest attack. It does extra damage at the cost of extra Fatigue. It is also slower than the
other attacks.
JOY4: Sheathe weapon
This will Sheathe your current weapon, or take you out of the fighting stance if you are unarmed.
JOY5: Block
The block move will add to your Defense skill and cause more blows to do only fatigue damage.
JOY6: Run (hold the button down)
This will cause you to run from place to place. The largest drawback of this is that it rapidly depletes your
Fatigue, so if you run into a fight, you might not have the energy to engage the enemy straight away. Also good
for running away when you need to regroup.
JOY7: Cast Spell (Hold down Button 7 and use Buttons 4, 5, or 6 to cast spells in slots 1, 2, or 3)
Combat Combo 1 [(hold down) JOY8 + press JOY1]
Combat Combo 2 [(hold down) JOY8 + press JOY2]
Combat Combo 3 [(hold down) JOY8 + press JOY3]
These are the interactive attacks. Successfully performing an interactive attack depends on the monster
you are fighting and the type of weapon you have equipped. For example, [JOY8+JOY2] vs. an Ogrok will perform
an interactive, but only if you have a sword type weapon equipped. [JOY8+JOY1] vs. the Earth Golem with a bludgeoning
type weapon (hammer)is another interactive you can try. Experiment with these moves using different weapons
on each of the monsters to find the interactives.
With Weapon Sheathed:
JOY 1: Use
This will cause you to use an object directly in front of your character, such as a Door or Lever. It is also
used to talk to NPCs.
JOY 2: Get Item
This will cause you to attempt to get items from an open container or on the ground directly in front of you
JOY 4: Unsheathe weapon
This will Draw your current weapon, or put you into a fighting stance if you are unarmed.
JOY 6: Run (hold the button down)
This will cause you to run from place to place. The largest drawback of this is that it rapidly depletes your
Fatigue, so if you run into a fight, you might not have the energy to engage the enemy straight away.
JOY 7: Cast Spell (Hold down Button 7 and use Buttons 4, 5, or 6 to cast spells in slots 1, 2, or 3)
Mouse Controls:
With Weapon Drawn:
Left Mouse Button: Attack (randomly picks Swing, Thrust, or Chop)
Right Mouse Button: Move
**Note: Although it is possible to play Revenant with the mouse alone, we reccomend using mouse and keyboard
so all combat moves (dodges, blocks, interactives) will be available to you.**
With Weapon Sheathed:
Left Mouse Button: Use Item / Talk to NPC / Get from container, ground
Right Mouse Button: Move
Hold down CTRL + Right Mouse click on any object, character, or item to view its description on the stat pane.
Movement:
Move the cursor away from the character and R HOLD the button to move in the direction of the cursor arrow
Keyboard Controls:

used to talk to NPCs.

Combat Combo 3 [CTRL-D]
These are the interactive attacks. Successfully performing an interactive attack depends on the monster
you are fighting and the type of weapon you have equipped. For example, CTRL-B vs. an Ogrok will perform
an interactive, but only if you have a sword type weapon equipped. CTRL-A vs. the Earth Golem with a bludgeoning
type weapon (hammer)is another interactive you can try. Experiment with these moves using different weapons
on each of the monsters to find the interactives.
Fatalities:
Some monsters have a fatality type killing blow which can be performed by selecting the right type of attack
with the right weapon when the monsters health is low. Try out the swing attack vs. an Ogrok with a sword,
the chop attack vs. an Arakna with a sword, or the chop attack vs. the Skeleton with any weapon type.
Movement:
You can use either the ARROW KEYS or the NUMERIC KEYPAD (make sure NUMLOCK is off) to move your character.
Option Controls:
Pause Game [P]
This will allow you to pause the game to eat, drink, go to the bathroom, get a life, etc.
Retract Bottom Pane [B]
Retract Side Pane [V]
These two commands will make the two parts of the interface disappear or reappear.
Full Screen Mode [SPACEBAR]
This will cause both parts of the interface to disappear simultaneously.
Magic System:
Spells are cast using talismans. The talismans needed for this demo can be found in your spell pouch, the purple bag in your inventory.
Once talismans are acquired, they can be used to make spells in the magic book.
1. Click on the purple bag icon on the right hand side of the screen.
2. Click on the spell scroll icon on the top right hand side of the screen.
3. Click on a talisman to add it to the spell creation panel at the bottom of the screen.
4. Add additional talismans by clicking on them or subtract talismans by clicking on the arrow to the right of
the spell creation panel.
5. Test created spells by clicking on the spell creation panel.
6. Once a spell is created, drag the icon from the spell scroll to the quick spell buttons on the left side of the bottom interface panel.
6. You can now cast that spell at any time by clicking on the quick spell button it is assigned to.
The following are the spell combinations used in this demo:
Lightning Bolt - sun + sky
Fire Wind - sun + soul + stars
Heal - life + soul + sun
Charm - Stars + sun
DEMO DIFFICULTY:
Some people may find the demo too "easy". This was intentional. We want you to have the chance to experience
the gameplay without dying every ten seconds. We also included some of the more powerful weapons/armor in the shops
so that ALL players could experience the inventory control system, and how easy and cool it is to
switch armors and weapons. You'll find more than enough gold by fighting to purchase new weapons and armor.
If you find you want more of a "challenge" then do the following:
Do not buy any armor higher than the leather set.
Do not buy the Tulwar, Hammer, or Battle Axe.
Discard your starting gold and only spend what you find in the game.
Disclaimer:
This demo is based on BETA code, and therefore may have some bugs. There may be some compatibility issues
with certain video cards, and there may be some system incompatibilities that prevent you from playing the
game. If this is the case, please email your System Specs to Revenant@eidos.com and we will do our best to
see that the final version runs on your machine.
If you have any questions or comments for the development team you can get in touch with them on the Revenant message boards at
www.vaultnetwork.com and http://revenantqs.telefragged.com/index.shtml
There may be some unpleasant crashes you experience while playing the game. These issues will all be
fixed in the final game.
