  2.         Sigma Designs Windows 95 README.TXT for REALmagic LITE

  7. Congratulations on your purchase of the RealMagic LITE MPEG multimedia
  8. playback controller.  This file contains important information not 
  9. available at the time the manual was printed.  Please take time to read
  10. through it for the latest updates.  
  11.   
  12. Software Installation 
  13. =====================
  14. The Setup works in two phases : setting up the Windows 95 Device Manager
  15. and loading the REALmagic drivers in the system.
  16.  
  17. Setup Windows 95 Device Manager
  18. -------------------------------
  19. 1- In the Control Panel group, click "Add New Hardware".
  20. 2- Choose "No" for "Search for New hardware" option. Click Next.
  21. 3- Choose "Sound, Video, Game controllers" from the list of devices. 
  22.    Click Next.
  23. 4- Click on the "Have Disk" option. Make sure the REALmagic diskette is  
  24.    in the floppy drive.
  25. 5- Enter "A" for the drive letter and click OK. (This example assumes
  26.    that your floppy drive letter is A:).
  27. 6- The dialog box should display the following :
  28.  
  29.                   Sigma Designs REALmagic Lite
  30.     Click OK. 
  31.  
  32. 7- A window displaying the resources used by the REALmagic board will
  33.    appear. Choose Next to continue. The resources will be allocated 
  34.    and the REALmagic PNP driver (RMSRVDRV.VxD) will be copied to the 
  35.    WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  36. 8- Choose Finish to complete the first step of the installation.
  37. 9- Select shut down the computer.         
  38.            
  39. Loading REALmagic drivers
  40. -------------------------
  41. 1- Start Windows 95 (if your system does not boot directly into 
  42.    Windows 95.)
  43. 2- Choose Start, in the lower left corner, then choose Run.
  44. 3- In the command line box type A:\SETUP. (This example assumes that 
  45.    your floppy drive letter is A:.)
  46. 4- Follow the instructions given by the Setup program. Choose Install.
  47. 5- A window displaying the resources used by the REALmagic board will
  48.    appear. Click OK to continue.
  49. 6- Click Continue to accept the default directory setting (C:\REALMAGC\)
  50.    or enter an alternate directory name.
  51. 7- After Setup finishes copying the files, it will prompt you to reboot
  52.    the computer. You must shut down the computer and restart to activate
  53.    the REALmagic board.
  54.  
  55. Changing a Resource (for Advanced Users)
  56. ===================
  57. If you wish to change a resource (I/O address or/and IRQ number) assigned
  58. by the Plug N Play feature of Win 95, do the following :
  59.  
  60. 1- Start System from the the Control Panel group.
  61. 2- Choose Device Manager and double-click on "Sound, video, and game 
  62.    controllers".
  63. 3- Double-click on "Sigma Designs REALmagic Lite".
  64. 4- Select the tab "Resources".
  65. 5- Double-click on the required resource. Click "Change Settings".
  66. 6- Modify the settings to the required value. Make sure there is NO conflict
  67.    specified in the Conflict Information box. Click OK.
  68. 7- Restart the computer as required in the next dialog box.
  69. 8- After Windows 95 startup, select "Border Adjust" in the REALmagic group.
  70.    You will get a dialog box specifying that the hardware settings have 
  71.    changed and you need to restart the computer.  Click Yes.
  72. 9- After restarting, the REALmagic board is properly installed to the new
  73.    resources.
  74.       
  75. ISSUES with PROTECTED MODE  32 bit  CDROM DRIVERS:                     
  76. ==================================================
  77.  
  78. Problem: Based on information available from Microsoft:
  79.          - Windows 95 supports "WhiteBook-compliant VideoCds". This
  80.            includes the mandatory inclusion of an ISO 9660 volume.
  81.          - Windows 95 does not run CDi applications. CDi discs, which are 
  82.            not ISO 9660 compliant and use a proprietary "GreenBook" CDi File 
  83.            System, are not supported by Windows 95 except through the use of
  84.            direct media access via a Real Mode driver.
  85.            In order to RUN VideoCD, CDi and CDi with GreenBook CDi File
  86.        System we need to use the Real Mode CDROM driver. This is because
  87.            the Protected Mode Mini Port Driver provided by Windows 95 
  88.            supports only the WhiteBook-Compliant Video CDs.
  89.  
  90. Solution:
  91.     Use the Real Mode CDROM Driver which was set and loaded in your 
  92.         system before you installed Windows 95. During Setup, Windows 95 
  93.     will remove the MSCDEX.EXE from the memory and it will replace it 
  94.         with the CDFS and the new 32 bit Protected Mode Mini Port driver.
  95.         Do the following steps:
  96.         1.  Install the Real Mode CDROM driver. When you run REALmagic 
  97.             SETUP, it will install and/or inform you about the type of
  98.             the CDROM drive on your system, so you could install it
  99.             yourself.
  100.             - In the AUTOEXEC.BAT, remove the REM from the line
  101.                 REM C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE  /D:SONY_000 /M:10 /V
  102.                    (or add the line without REM if it is not there)
  103.                         (the above line assumes a Sony drive)
  104.             - Make sure the proper CDROM Real Mode device driver is loaded
  105.               in CONFIG.SYS. Double check this with the old copy of the 
  106.               CONFIG.SYS you backed up before installing Windows 95. 
  107.             - If the device needs a Port Address and Interrupt, you need 
  108.               to check EITHER the FMPDRV.INI file in REALMAGC (or the 
  109.               directory of your REALmagic Applications/Drivers) OR select 
  110.               the System option in Control Panel, click on Device Manager
  111.               tab, Select the REALmagic device, click on the properties 
  112.               button and check the CDROM resources:
  113.                 CDROM Address   =  Second Input/Output range  from top
  114.                 CDROM Interrupt =  Second Interrupt request   from top                        
  115.           2.  In Control Panel, double-click the System option.
  116.           3.  Click the Device Manager tab.
  117.           4.  Select the device type CDROM controller.
  118.           5.  Click the remove button.
  119.                     If the CD-ROM drive is an IDE drive and connected to the
  120.                     same IDE controller of the hard disk (or SCSI drive 
  121.                     connected to the same SCSI controller of the hard disk),
  122.                     you will need to remove also the hard disk controller 
  123.                     from within the Device Manager. 
  124.           6.  Restart WINDOWS 95. Now, the Real Mode driver is active.
  125.               NOTE: Make sure you do not have both Real Mode and Protected 
  126.                     Mode driver loaded. That would create a conflict, 
  127.                     specially when they are both set to different Port
  128.                     Addresses and Interrupt Request Lines. If there is such 
  129.                     conflict, upon entering Windows 95, the Explorer might 
  130.                     go into an infinite loop (long wait) to search for
  131.                     the CDROM driver. If this happens, press the combination 
  132.                     Ctrl+ALT+DEL, Select the Explorer task, and press  
  133.                     END TASK. Remove one of the drivers (Real or Protected). 
  134.                        
  135.  
  136. SPECIAL NOTES:
  137. =============
  138.      1. REALmagic software updates CONFIG.SYS for the SONY CDROM only 
  139.         (for the Lite IDE board only).
  140.      2. IDE CDROM interface has the fixed IO address 0x170 and the 
  141.         interrupt at IRQ 15.
  142.  
  143.   
  144. RealMagic CD Station  
  145. ====================  
  146. RealMagic CD Station is a new interactive utility for Windows which  
  147. automatically detects and plays different CD formats.  It provides a  
  148. VCR-like interface in a user-friendly fashion and allows the user to  
  149. playback different types of CD-ROMs including, audio CDs, Video CDs,  
  150. CD-i movie CDs, and data CDs. It also allows you to create a playlist  
  151. of your favorite tracks.  With some VideoCD 2.0's, you might need to
  152. press the Eject/Insert button twice before starting Play.
  153.   
  154. Help for REALmagic CD Station
  155. =============================
  156.  
  157. Windows On-Line Help is available for the REALmagic CD Station from 
  158. the Control Menu Box or just press <F1> key any time.  Pull down 
  159. the Control Menu Box and select Help!. Then select the topic you
  160. want from the list.
  161.  
  162.  
  163. RealSaver  
  164. =========  
  165. RealSaver is an add-on to the standard Windows screen savers that allows   
  166. you to play MPEG files from your CD-ROM instead of the traditional   
  167. animation sequences provided with Windows.  
  168.   
  169.  
  170. Palette Problems  
  171. ================  
  172.   
  173. If you are experiencing color palette problems with some of your  
  174. software programs, such as wrong colors or posterized images, it is  
  175. most likely that you have a local bus VGA adapter.  Some software  
  176. does not pass the palette information to the feature connector as the  
  177. palette changes.  Since RealMagic gets the palette information from  
  178. the feature connector, wrong colors will result.  
  179.   
  180. During SETUP, if the SETUP program detects that you have a VLB video  
  181. card, it will install a fix in the FMPDRV.INI file in the RealMagic   
  182. directory.  FMPDRV.INI is a text file that contains all the essential  
  183. parameters for your RealMagic's operation.  Check this text file to  
  184. make sure the "PaletteFix" parameter is set to "Yes."  
  185.   
  186. If the problem persists, try connecting your VGA display directly to   
  187. your VGA board, in effect bypassing the RealMagic board, when you are   
  188. using this software.  Another possible solution is to connect the two   
  189. VGA outputs, one from RealMagic and the other from your VGA board, to   
  190. a VGA signal switch box.  This type of device allows you to switch   
  191. between the RealMagic VGA output and your VGA board output with a flick   
  192. of a switch.  
  193.   
  194. In other cases, when changing display settings (resolution, number of
  195. colors), Windows 95 might not need a reboot. However you will need to 
  196. reboot in order to activate the REALmagic palette snooper.
  197.

  199. DOS TITLES
  200. ==========
  201.  
  202. The way DOS works has slightly changed under Windows 95. In order 
  203. to optimize performance of DOS MPEG titles, please run the titles in
  204. the real mode MS-DOS:
  205.  
  206. 1-  Select Shutdown from the Taskbar (after quitting Windows applications).
  207. 2-  Select Restart the computer in MS-DOS.
  208. 3-  At the DOS prompt after reboot, enter the command for the title,
  209.     such as :
  210.  
  211.          C:\>D:
  212.          D:\>FLASH
  213.  
  214. 4-  To start Windows after exiting from the title, type :
  215.  
  216.         c:\>EXIT  <Enter> 
  217.  
  218.  
  219. WINDOWS TITLES
  220. ==============
  221.  
  222. If you run a Windows title and you get the message "No MPegVideo 
  223. driver", do the following :
  224.  
  225. 1- In the Accessories group, double-click on Notepad.
  226. 2- Choose the File, Open menu.
  227. 3- Type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI in the filename box and press <Enter>.
  228. 4- Go to the section MCI after the line
  229.      ReelMagic=C:\REALMAGC\MCIFMP.DRV
  230. 5- Add the line :
  231.      MPegVideo=C:\REALMAGC\MCIFMP.DRV
  232.    (This example assumes that your REALmagic drivers were installed 
  233.    on drive C: in the directory REALMAGC.)
  234. 6- Save and Exit from the File menu.
  235.

  237. Playing DRAGON'S LAIR
  238. =====================
  239.  
  240. Dragon's Lair requires the REALmagic DOS driver to be loaded in memory
  241. before it will play.  We provide a batch file in the REALmagic
  242. directory called DRAGON.BAT that handles all this for you.  To play
  243. Dragon's Lair, place the CD in your CD-ROM drive and type:
  244.  
  245.     CD \REALMAGC and press <Enter>
  246.     DRAGON and press <Enter>
  247.  
  248. Note: the batch file assumes your CD-ROM drive letter is "D".  If this is
  249. not the case, you will need to use a text editor to modify the batch
  250. file.  The line which reads:
  251.  
  252.     D:
  253.  
  254. should be changed to reflect your CD-ROM's drive letter (e.g. "E:").
  255.  
  256.  
  257. Playing THE HORDE
  258. =================
  259.  
  260. Make sure your sound card is 100% SoundBlaster(TM) compatible.  Some
  261. sound cards, such as the Media Vision ProAudio Spectrum 16(TM) and
  262. boards that use the Media Vision PAS 16(TM) chip set, will not work
  263. with The Horde (no sound).  Crystal Dynamics has provided a fix for
  264. this in the form of a new HORDE.EXE.  It is available on the Sigma
  265. Designs BBS for download.
  266.  
  267. Another sound card, the Sound Galaxy Pro(TM) from Aztech, requires
  268. a special command when starting The Horde.  Modify the PLAY.BAT file
  269. in the \HORDE directory (created by the INSTALL program) to start
  270. The Horde with the command line "HORDE /S:SBLASTER" (between FMPLOAD
  271. and FMPLOAD /U).  Without this command line option, the volume
  272. controls of the Sound Galaxy Pro will be set to zero each time you
  273. start The Horde.
  274.  
  275. If you use disk caching programs, such as Microsoft SMARTDRV, you
  276. MAY experience hanging problems.  If you do, try turning off the
  277. "write-caching" to the hard drive where The Horde has been installed.
  278. For example, if you use SMARTDRV and The Horde is installed on drive
  279. C:, use the command SMARTDRV C to turn off "write-caching" on drive C:.
