  32. Thanks for taking the time to download Printer's Apprentice 6.0. This
  33. file contains information about this software, what it does, and
  34. what the system requirements are. Instructions for quickly installing
  35. Printer's Apprentice 6.0 are also included. Information for registered
  36. users of the software is a few pages down in the document. The manual 
  37. for Printer's Apprentice is located in a Windows help file.

  39. Q. What is it?
  40. A. Printer's Apprentice is a font management utility for the Windows
  41.    3.1 operating environment. It helps you manage all your TrueType
  42.    and Adobe Type 1 fonts by printing inventory sheets (3 flavors!),
  43.    ANSI charts, keyboard layouts, and specimen sheets. It was noted
  44.    as the *BEST* Windows font utility by PC Magazine (10/27/92) and 
  45.    features one of the sharpest interfaces around.
  46.  
  47.    Printer's Apprentice is a great addition to the font CD-ROMs with
  48.    500 or more fonts. The Printer's Apprentice Font Install Wizard
  49.    lets you look at TrueType fonts BEFORE you install them! You can
  50.    even print a catalog of fonts from a CD/floppy/hard drive without
  51.    installing or copying a single file! 
  52.  
  53.    The Printer's Apprentice User's Guide is a full featured, context
  54.    sensitive Windows help file. A printed User's Guide is available
  55.    upon registration.
  56.  
  57. Q. What are the system requirements?
  58. A. Printer's Apprentice 6.0 will run on any PC running Windows 3.1,
  59.    Windows 3.11, or Windows NT. We recommend at least a 386 with
  60.    4 megs of memory. Printing functions will work on any printer,
  61.    but we recommend a laser printer for acceptable quality.
  62.    
  63.    This software also requires a copy of VBRUN300.DLL. This DLL can
  64.    be found on many BBS systems. It can also be found on Compuserve
  65.    in the DTPFORUM, library 6, VBRUN3.ZIP.
  66.  
  67. Q. What's New with 6.0?
  68. A. 6.0 adds Wizards for installing, uninstalling, and printing
  69.    TrueType fonts. There is also a resource Wizard that searches your
  70.    windows\system directory for unused font FOT files that take up
  71.    precious hard drive space. Printer's Apprentice can preview and
  72.    print uninstalled fonts (through the Wizards). This version is
  73.    also faster and takes up fewer system resources.

  75. Q. How do I install this program real quick?
  76. A. Unzip the distribution ZIP file to a new diskette or directory 
  77.    and run INSTALL.EXE. The installation program copies the files
  78.    files to your hard drive and creates a Program Manager icon
  79.    for Printer's Apprentice.

  81. Q. I purchased and earlier version of Printer's Apprentice. Will
  82.    my registration password still work?
  83. A. The registration password you received with the diskette will
  84.    work with this and all future versions of Printer's Apprentice.
  85.    If you are a registered user, you will be receiving an upgrade
  86.    notice around April 1995.

  88. Q. What about Windows NT, Windows95(96?), and OS/2 Warp? 
  89. A. Printer's Apprentice has been fully tested on a variety of
  90.    machines running Windows 3.1/3.11. It has also been tested
  91.    on Windows NT Workstation 3.5. However, we can only provide
  92.    technical support to Windows 3.11 users. 
  93.  
  94.    We are fully committed to a version of Printer's Apprentice
  95.    for Windows95. However, we will only support Windows95 when
  96.    the system is released to the general public in August, 1995.
  97.    We *cannot* support Printer's Apprentice 6.0 running on 
  98.    beta versions of Chicago/Windows 4.0/Windows95.

  100. Q. How do I remove the program if I need more space on my machine?
  101. A. There is a file named INSTALL.LOG located in the PA directory. This
  102.    lists out *every* file and Program Manager group added to your system.
  103.    You can use this file to track down the EXE, VBX, and DLL files 
  104.    used by Printer's Apprentice. 
  105.  
  106.    Be aware, however, that other programs on your system may rely on 
  107.    the support VBX and DLL files used by Printer's Apprentice. This 
  108.    is especially true if you are an active user of many shareware 
  109.    programs. For example, lots of commercial and shareware packages
  110.    use the THREED.VBX library. If you delete this from your 
  111.    WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you might get a <FILE NOT FOUND> error
  112.    when you try to run a program that uses this DLL.  
  113.  
  114. Q. How do I purchase this program?
  115. A. We offer three easy payment options. Prices are listed below.

  153. Q. What is the upgrade policy?
  154. A. When you register, I will send you a registration code, a diskette 
  155.    and a license card. Upon release of major upgrades, I will notify 
  156.    you with a post card. Upgrades run between $5-$10 to cover the cost 
  157.    of mailing, diskettes, and duplication. The registration codeword 
  158.    will always work for future versions of the product.

  160. Q. Printer's Apprentice seems to install OK, but when I try to run it, 
  161.    I get a "<filename>.VBX is out of date" error.  What is the problem?
  162. A. This is common for programs written in Visual Basic and Visual C++. 
  163.    VBX files are like DLLÆs. They are files with common routines used by 
  164.    many programs. "Out of Date" errors and other problems with VBX files 
  165.    are often caused by two problems.
  166.  
  167.    1. Version Control
  168.    Just like end-user software packages, VBXÆs are always being improved. 
  169.    Setup programs are supposed to check versions before installing a 
  170.    VBX/DLL file over one that is already on your computer. But this is 
  171.    not always the case. 
  172.  
  173.    2. Duplicate Files
  174.    VBX files are supposed to be placed in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory by
  175.    setup programs, but not everyone does this. Many times you will have 
  176.    duplicate copies of the same VBX in both your WINDOWS and your 
  177.    WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  
  178.  
  179.    The installation program used by PrinterÆs Apprentice makes every effort
  180.    to ensure the correct VBX files are placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM 
  181.    directory. However, if you already have an older copy of a VBX file in 
  182.    your WINDOWS directory, the setup program may not be able to detect it. 
  183.    So when PrinterÆs Apprentice loads, it may see the older VBX in your 
  184.    WINDOWS directory instead of the newer one that shipped with PA and was 
  185.    placed in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. (Got all that?) This is when you
  186.    get the "out of date" errors.
  187.  
  188.    The situation is easy, but tedious to fix. 
  189.    1. Search your hard drive for every copy of the VBX file that is 
  190.       giving you errors. 
  191.    2. If you have only one copy of that VBX file, then a recently installed 
  192.       software package copied it's older version of the VBX over the newer 
  193.       version that shipped with Printer's Apprentice. 
  194.  
  195.     a. Move the older VBX file to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory 
  196.     b. Rerun the Printer's Apprentice installation program.
  197.  
  198.    3. If you have multiple copies of the same VBX file (for example, one in 
  199.       windows and one in windows\system), then you need to figure out which is 
  200.       the most recent version and move it to the windows\system directory.
  201.  
  202.     a. Use the Windows 3.11 File Manager to find out which copy has 
  203.        the most recent version number. Select the file and press 
  204.        ALT-ENTER to see the fileÆs properties.
  205.     b. Move the most recent one to the windows\system directory.
  206.     c. Move the older version off your computer to a floppy disk.
  207.  
  208.            - if you donÆt have the Windows 3.11 File Manager -
  209.  
  210.     a. Move all the duplicate copies of the VBX file to floppies.
  211.     b. Rerun the Printer's Apprentice installation program.
  212.  
  213.       Generally, you should only have one copy of each VBX file needed by your 
  214.       software programs. The VBX files should all be in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM 
  215.       directory so installation programs donÆt stumble...
  216.  
  217.       Believe me, this problem does not just happen to Printer's Apprentice! 
  218.       Lose Your Mind Development distributes a program called VersionViewer 
  219.       for inspecting the version resources of executables, DLL's, VBX's, 
  220.       and drivers. See the help file for more information on this wonderful
