[1] The Bullpen by Ryan Brewster
Hello again, from the Center of Cyberspace Comics Fandom!
This week's been another exciting week at the ComicBook Net...
Mike Imboden, CBN's Public Relations coordinator, just started a contest
with really GREAT prizes for CBN participants... The purpose of the
contest is to come up with a _logo_ for the Comic Book Net!! Once a
logo has won (and the great prizes shipped off to the winning CBN
participant entry), you can all look forward to viewing the graphics at
our World Wide Web Site, http://www.cris.com/~Xenozoid/ComicBkNet.html.
Speaking of WWW sites, the home page of the Explorer Press (which puts out
Explorers, an exciting B&W comic by Terry Collins and Bill Neville) is now
up and running at http://www.cris.com/~Xenozoid/Explorers.html. Be sure
to let me know what you think!
Mary Jury, CBN's resident Marvel Mutant zombie <g>, is holding a survey
on the merry muties from the Mighty M. Be sure to stop by the Marvel
Chat conference and give her your input!
And _I_ recently (just today, in fact) posted the entire script for my
CBN Amateur Press Alliance submission! The comic will be 10 pages
long, with a B&W "cover page", and a page of info about myself! Heh.
For you folks who just can't contain your curiosity, and aren't
involved with the CBN APA, send me two bucks and I'll mail you a
copy of the 12-pg 'zine. Send the cash (well-concealed, or check or
money order's fine) to Emissary, c/o Ryan Brewster, 84 Bunker Hill St.,
Lancaster, NH 03584.
ATTENTION, SMALL-PRESS AND MINI-COMIX AUTHORS/PUBLISHERS!!!
We want as much info about you as we can drag up!! Send us anything
you can tell us about yourself and your products, and you may get some
free publicity! :) Send info to Xenozoid@cris.com, ComicBkNet@aol.com,
or Ryan Brewster, 84 Bunker Hill St., Lancaster, NH, 03584!
Best,

[2] CSNsider by W. Batty & C. Biggers
This is the CSNsider from CSN #428, which will be in shops on 8/31/95.
It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of
COMIC SHOP NEWS!
The release of Decipher's Star Wars Collectible Card Game Limited Edition
Boosters and Starters has been postponed from the previously-announced
late August to October or November...
Look for an ongoing WildCATs spinoff series in early '96...
Marvel has plans for an ongoing Elektra series in early '96...
Dark Horse will be the publishing home for Barry Windsor-Smith's trio of
upcoming books; look for the first book to appear in early '96...
An Exiles-X-Men crossover is also in the planning stages...
Wizards of the Coast has announced that it will not be producing the
previously-announced Lord of the Rings Collectible Card Game (based on
Tolkien's creation) after all; ICE, who holds the right to the game,
has announced that they will go ahead with plans to produce the game...
to the growing list of upcoming Marvel/DC crossovers you can add a
Green Lantern/Silver Surfer crossover written by Ron Marz and illustrated
by Darryl Banks; don't expect to see it until mid- to late-'96, though...
Spokesmen for Hanna-Barbera and the Cartoon Network say that the rumored
romance between Jonny Quest and Race Bannon's daughter in the new animated
series is just a rumor; and they also confirm that, in order to make sure
the new Jonny Quest series is accessible by as many fans as possible,
the series will be carried on both The Cartoon Network and TBS, making it
available to almost every viewer with cable or a satellite dish...
And need we say that a number of companies are already exploring the
possibilities of bringing Jonny Quest to comics in conjunction with
the new series?...
Hasbro plans to release its first Superman toys late this year, tying in
with the Lois and Clark television series; by the time the Superman
animated series debuts in 1996, Hasbro will have a full line of
animation-inspired toys ready for release...
Negotiations are nearing completion to bring Miracleman back to the
comic racks in '96.
CSN #428 features Underworld from DC on the cover, plus more news and our
exclusive September Hot Picks that features the best bets due this month
from every major publisher.
The only way to get Comic Shop News is to visit a shop that carries CSN.
The publication costs the shops just a dime each and is generally free to
customers. If your shop doesn't carry CSN, nag 'em until they do. After
all, isn't your business and satisfaction worth a dime a week?

1. Industry News ------------------------------------------------------
Fusion Studios Formed:
8/17/95 - Critically-acclaimed artist Joel Orbeta has announced the
formation of Fusion Studios.
Orbeta stated that the new publisher is dedicated to "producing a new
breed of comics that combines the best of manga and mainstream comic
books. Anime and manga are the cutting-edge of world pop culture, and
US comics are ready & waiting for this blast of adrenalin."
Fusion Studios' first project will be 'Manga Zen' by Orbeta and Zen
Intergalactic Ninja co-creator Steve Stern. The same creative team will
then produce the upcoming 'cyber-manga' title, SHYGIRL.
A Phillipino-American, Orbeta's work has been hailed by Capital City
Distribution as "excellent". Vantage Magazine said, "We've never seen
anything like it."
Orbeta said, "Fusion Studios has several additional projects, from an
exciting roster of talents, which will be announced shortly. Those
interesed in more information should contact us directly at 516-823-0129."
Marvel Comics/Heroes' World Experiencing Growing Pains:
8/20/95 - Marvel has apologized for over-charging on their Canadian
exchange rate prices. Marvel has been charging roughly Canadian$1.41
per US dollar, when the going rate is around $1.37. Marvel/Heroes
World will issue credit to retailers for the over-charge.
Additionally, a few retailers have reported over-shipment and over-
billing occurances from Heroes World.
Exiles to Crossover with X-Men:
8/17/95 - Marvelibu's new Exiles Ultraverse title will cross over with
Marvel Universe's own X-Men comics sometime in the near future. The
event will follow up the Black September storyline in which Juggernaut,
the Proffessor X's brother, crosses over into the Ultraverse with a
band of exiled mutants from the Marvel Mutantverse.
Another X-Men crossover scheduled is the X-Men/WildCATs crossover,
coming soon, with art from Jim Lee.
[Editor's Note: Just recently noticed an ad in ClanDestine #12 from
Marvel (the final issue as noted in the next news brief) for an
Exiles vs. X-Men #0 from American Entertainment, similar to their
recent Prime/Hulk and Wolverine/Night Man offers. Whether this is
the crossover mentioned or simply a "prelude" remains to be seen...]
ClanDestine Cancelled:
8/17/95 - The critically acclaimed superhero team title ClanDestine
will be cancelled as of issue #12. The comic was originally solicited
under the Marvel UK banner, and later released as a regular Marvel
comic after the UK imprint was jettisonned.
Calabrese Interviewed in Direct:
8/25/95 - Jerry Calabrese, president of the Marvel Entertainment Group,
was recently featured in the July issue of Direct, a direct-mail industry
magazine. He told writer Diane Cyr that he doesn't read comics and said
his goal is to turn Marvel into a "Franklin Mint for Kids" by amassing
enough information about Marvel customers to generate an invaluable
consumer database. Cyr said that throughout the entire interview,
Calabrese never used the word "Super-hero", while he used the word
"equity" quite frequently.
During Calabrese's four-year-thus-far direction, Marvel's licensing
and promotional income has risen from $7 million to about $40 million.
Not only do promotional tie-ins with fast-food joints, video games and
cereals increase Marvel's revenue, the mail-in offers also collect names,
ages and addresses for Marvel's growing database.
Calabrese's favorite comic book character is the Punisher.
[Editor's note: heh.]
Virtual Comics Featured in CBG:
8/25/95 - This week's issue of the Comic Buyer's Guide featured Byron
Preiss Multimedia Company's upcoming comic venture, Virtual Comics.
Danny Fingeroth, former editor of the Spider-Man group of titles for
Marvel Comics, will head Virtual Comics, which will feature new
super-heroes developed for the digital medium by a number of comics
creators.
Among the first titles to appear from Virtual Comics will be "They Call
Me...The Skul", written by Fingeroth and pencilled by Ron Lim. The
title will feature a superhero accused of murder who is sent to
"America's most terrifying prison".
Also from Virtual Comics will come The 6, written by former X-Men
scribe Fabian Nicieza with art and design by Greg Luzniak. It will be
about a superhero team whose origins are linked with a kidnapped super-
hero.
The Suit, written by Dan Chichester and Greg Write, will be designed by
Shawn McManus. The Suit will be about a superhero whose armor holds
a hundred secrets.
Virtual Comics will also offer a series of comics based on the Stan
Lee's Riftworld series of novels. Lee will write the digital comics
himself and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) will design them.
Virtual Comics will begin at the end of August on an on-line service.
DC Comics Continues Hitchhiker Trilogy:
8/25/95 - DC Comics will publish a three-issue miniseries of comics
in 1996 based on the third book in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To
The Galaxy "Trilogy" (which in fact consists of 5 books). Christopher
Schenck will provide the breakdowns, with Neil Vokes on pencils and John
Nyberg inking.
Byron Preiss Visual Publications, Inc. will also adapt the late Roger
Zelazny's best-selling Chronicles of Amber books in 1996, to be published
by DC Comics. Nine Princes in Amber will be adapted as a trilogy of
painted graphic novels. The first issue will be painted by Lou Harrison,
the second by Bryn Barnard and the third by Tom Roberts.
William Gibson's cyberpunk novel Neuromancer will also be adapted in '96
by Byron Preiss Visual Publications, inc in a trilogy of graphic novels.
Gentlemen's Quarterly Serializes Miller/Bisley Comic:
8/25/95 - The British edition of GQ has been serializing Frank Miller
and Simon Bisley's science-fiction comic serial "Bad Boy", about an
amnesiac boy who awakens in a nightmarish future. The comic has been
appearing in two-page installments for a few issues now, but will not
make its way to the American edition of the men's magazine until it has
finished its run in the British GQ. The 24-page serial will arrive in
the states in June of 1998.
Voices For Children to Hold Art Auction:
8/16/95 - Voices for Children will be holding another Comics Art
Auction at the Concourse Center in San Francisco on September 1-4.
The auction will be held at the Sports and Comics Collectors
Convention, sponsored by B&G Promotions, Inc. Publishers & comics
pros wishing to make a donation of comic arts, scripts and comics
for the auction can send e-mail to Dale Colvin at his e-mail address
75464.1130@compuserve.com.
Peter Kupper Interviewed on National Radio:
8/16/95 - Peter Kupper, creator of ComicsTrips, was interviewed on
the National Public Radio show Fresh Air, promoting his two new comics,
Stripped (an autobiography) and a Kafka anthology.
The artist's goal is for his work to be sold in bookstores. Therefore,
he's doing hardbacks. He says most people don't like going into comic
stores. "They are very scary places", he said, "with costumed muscle-
men leaping out at you from every side. It's hard to find something
there that's not aimed at 15-year-old boys".
He's not entirely happy with bookstores either. Most of them have
sections for "graphic novels", thus his work will likely be filed
there next to Batman, "very incongruous", he says. He said that
his Kafka adaptations should go on the shelf with the other Kafka
books, and Stripped should be in the autobiography section, not
in art or humor.
2. Editorial: Miscellaney ----------------------------------------------
* First of all, I'm sorry this issue's so short and review-less...
Soccer pre-season just started up for me, as well as racing to beat
the deadline for the CBN APA (see the last bullet-misc entry), so I
have had less and less time to work on important stuff like BBS'ing. :)
* A hearty *THBBBTTT!!!* right back to you, Nate! :)
* Computer Comics... The concept is very intriguing. I would tend to
think that a comic book published on the World Wide Web could be very
profitable with the right advertisers and the right strategy. Because
of the Internet's slow speed, it may seem unrealistic, but if loaded
one panel/word ballon at a time, I'm thinking that even the slowness
of the web could enhance the online comic reading experience. I am
interested in how Virtual Comics pulls off this online publishing
venture.
* A few people have expressed their confusion concerning how an online
magazine could possibly be profitable (see: Heroes World...). In fact,
publishing online may be even _more_ profitable, in the near future. With
online accounts & passwords integrated, subscription charges _are_
feasable, though most of the online publications would be free of
charge.
So how would they make money? First off, _advertising_. If there are
enough people accessing their publication, big companies will pay big
bucks to advertise their comics in the e-mag. An on the World Wide Web,
there is the added possibility of including a _link_ which the user
can follow to get even more information about the advertiser! Such
convenience could be very attractive to advertisers.
Also, the publisher doesn't have to foot the large bills that paper-
production and distribution generates. That saves big bucks that could
be better spent on hiring writers & artists.
Altogether, the profit margin is widened considerably.
* It's becoming somewhat fashionable to include a homosexual character
in recent comics. Being heterosexual myself, I neither endorse nor
condemn homosexuality, though I wouldn't be able to judge whether the
characters are being treated "realistically". I'd be interested in
hearing what the homosexual community would have to say about gay
superheroes. Does the seeming onslaught of homosexual characters in
comics give readers the right idea about realistic gay-straight ratios?
How do heterosexuals feel about homosexual role models?
* How many exclaimation points can you find in an issue of Fantastic
Four? How about WildCATs? Stray Bullets? Starman? Strangers in Paradise?
X-Men? How do they affect the feel of the book? Perhaps an "!-Index"
should in integrated into my reviews? How many question marks are in
this paragraph? :)
* Celtics got rid of Wilkins! Yahoo! Now they can afford a _real_
basketball player... >;)
* Have you all reserved copies of Sam & Max, Hilly Rose and Explorers
at your local comic shop?
If not, then fear not! Hikeeba Comics and the Comic Book Net are now
working on the possibility of offering these and many more fine
independent/small-press comics at _maximum_ discount!
* Speaking of Explorers, you can now check out that Explorers Web Page
I mentioned in last weeks' issue. The URL address is, again,
http://www.cris.com/~Xenozoid/Explorers.html. Stop by and give me
feedback! And while you're at it, find the first issue of Explorers at
your comic shop! That's Explorers, from Explorer Press, by Terry Collins
and Bill Neville... looks like a damn fine comic at that.
* I'm now working on the very latest adventures of Emissary. However,
much to the chagrin of some of the CBN: Fanfic participants, the latest
installment of my super-secret-agent-hero character (of COURSE he's
copyrighted (c) 1995, Ryan Brewster! <G>) serial will appear in the
upcoming CBN Amateur Press Association. I will also mail copies of my
14-page 'zine to anyone who sends $2 to Emissary, c/o Ryan Brewster,
84 Bunker Hill St. Lancaster, NH 03584.
I think that about does it. *whew*

[4] Some Stuff by Nathan Bredfeldt
I'd like to respond to CBEM editor Ryan Brewster's opinion column
from last week's E-Mag. I think Ryan is one of the neater guys on CBN. I
like his fanfic, he's a wonderful conference host, and he did a WONDERFUL
job editing his first issue of CBEM.
But, there's still that opinion column. The "Bad Girls aren't such a
bad thing" one. Everyone remember that? I've looked at a few Bad Girl books
(non concurrent issues of Lady Death and Vampirella), and I believe I can
safely rebuttle.
(BEGIN Rebuttle)
<thumb on nose, wiggling fingers, sticking tounge out>
BLAAAAAAAT!
(END Rebuttle) (and hope I haven't opened an overly nasty can of worms)
There, now that I've gotten that out of my system (and alienated
half the mag's readership in one way or another), I just wanted to let you
know that I just got through the first two issues of Dark Horse's STAR
WARS: X-WING- ROUGE SQUADRON, and I'm happy again.
Not happy like looking back at the first time I ever saw Star Wars
(I was pulled out of kindergarden class to go to the dentist, and
afterwards, my dad took me to see Star Wars). More like happy that some of
the old familiar is back.
Dark Horse's original Star Wars attempts have never impressed me too
much. I admit I've continued to buy them to show support to Star Wars in
general, and in hopes that a gem will come along. Plus there are two other
Star Wars fans in the house who will hang me out to dry if I suddenly cut
off their feed after 3 or 4 years.
DARK EMPIRE, their first attempt was well appreciated at the time,
because there was little else out there. It was great to see the old gang
again, with nothing to compare it to, it shined brightly. (Even if I think
they badly mishandled Boba Fett)
DROIDS came along, and even though C3PO is one of my favorites from
the series, really underwhelmed me. Sure it's lighthearted and fun, but
it's just too goofy for my tastes. I think I've been jaded by all those
grim and gritty comics.
DARK EMPIRE II came along with really REALLY nice covers, and drek
on the inside. It made the first DE look grand. The story dragged forever,
did nothing interesting, and failed to captivate my interest. The art
was too funky as well.
TALES OF THE JEDI's first mini series was fresh and exciting,
introducing us to some dynamic new characters. However, in later mini
series, those characters lost their freshness, and I started missing the
characters we've all come to know and love.
Through it all, only CLASSIC STAR WARS really held my interest.
Maybe it was the nostalgia, or the special format, or the fact that I
remembered parts of some of the stories from my youth. Sadly, it came
to an end all too soon, (the second series had only a measley nine
issues), leaving me alone once again.
Until ROUGE SQUADRON came along; the (slightly overpriced)
adventures of the only recurring minor Star Wars character, Wedge
Antillies. I like Wedge (who dosen't), but had little hope for this series.
And, sadly, there isn't much character development in those first few
issues (of Wedge or his squadron).
But, the mood is there. Again we get to thrill to the exploits of a
lowly band of rebels on a crusade against that nasty old empire. Again we
get to meet new characters, and see how the struggle against the empire
affects them. Again we get to see exotic locations, nasty beasts, and
exciting dogfights. And all is well. For now.
ToTJ had a good start, too. It quickly fell apart. With any luck,
Dark Horse will take extra care with this title, and keep us all
interested. For this comic to succeed, they need to breathe more life into
the characters (even Wedge), and help us care enough about them to stay
tuned each month (at $3 an issue). At the same time, they need to keep the
background fresh, with a range of exciting missions and locales. Seems like
a lot, but we comic fans are a fickle and demanding bunch. We want it all,
and if we don't get it from you, we're gonna look somewhere else.
To sum up, if you want nonstop action and adventure in your life,
go become a secret agent. But, if you'd like to stay home, and feel some
of that sense of nostalgia that you received from the original movies,
ROUGE SQUADRON might be the book for you. The book for you might also be
CLASSIC STAR WARS, and while both are spectacular reads, you won't have to
dig through back issue bins to find the former...
(Nathan Bredfeldt, CBN's resident amateur, just completed a two-week battle
with some nasty rashes. Now, if he can only get a radio talk show, his
life will be complete. Nathan can be reached at ComicBkNet@aol.com)

Join in the fun!
You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
echo-mail system....
Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have
the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation
software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
conversation.
If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure,
and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in
their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over
the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
LESS THAN 75"! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
information services available! :)
So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files
for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types
of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget
online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming
the most powerful being in a online adventure!
And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of
replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
Best,
--Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire.
