  3.         UUPC - Unix Comes to the PC!
  4.  
  5. This package is a compilation of the programs that you need to connect an
  6. IBM PC to one or more Unix systems via a protocol called "uucp".  Included
  7. is a mail program that will allow you to exchange e-mail with a Unix
  8. system, or another PC running uupc.  All you need is this package and another
  9. system to call.
  10.  
  11. I've also included some .txt files describing USENET, the international
  12. network of Unix (mostly) sites.  USENET has got to be the greatest toy in
  13. the world, and best of all, IT'S FREE!  With uupc, you can send mail from
  14. your lowly little PC to another site nearly anywhere in the world.  Of
  15. course, you need to find a friendly Unix site that will let you connect
  16. to the net through them.  Be diplomatic.

  18. One of the main features of USENET is network news.  Unfortunately, the news
  19. software is not included here.  Care to write it?  Sources for the programs
  20. that are curently used are available from several places.  For more info,
  21. get on the net and send mail to the uupc developers listed in the docs.

  23. You can get "on the air" with the contents of BINARIES.ARC and SUPORT.ARC.
  24. To make changes to the software, you will need Microsoft C 4.0, NDMAKE 4.0
  25. (or higher), and possibly MASM 4.0.  NDMAKE is a vastly superior replacement
  26. for the brain-dead MAKE that comes with MASM and MSC, and should be available
  27. on a BBS near you (it's shareware).

  29. One more thing:  This software is public-domain, and is expected to remain
  30. so.  If you port it to a new system, please place your new version in
  31. public-domain also.  This way we can all profit.
