IMPORTANT NOTES ON GOSCRIPT PLUS INSTALLATION:
---------------------------------------------
After you have completed the installation of GoScript, print the demo
files to make sure everything works before you attempt to print
a PostScript file generated by your application program.
The recommended setting for VMSize for most applications is 130 KB.
If you encounter "Out of memory error" or "Exceeds Interpreter Limits"
when you run the demo programs after installation, you may try to reduce
the VMSize allocated for PostScript virtual memory. VMSize as indicated
in the GSCONFIG.CFG file specifies the amount of PostScript virtual memory
(the memory area that GoScript stores PostScript names and dictionaries).
The PostScript virtual memory and GoScript temporary storage (heap memory)
are allocated from the same memory pool in DOS conventional memory
(the lower 640 KB of the PC). Therefore, if the VMSize is set too high,
there will not be enough memory left for GoScript working memory storage
during processing.
The percentage counter that appears when GoScript is processing a print
file is not updated when GoScript is processing bitmap or scanned images.
Therefore, if you have included bitmap or scanned images in your print
file, the percentage counter may not advance for long period of time.
Unsupported PostScript operator: setscreen
--------------------------------
This release of GoScript does not support the setscreen operator of the
PostScript language. The setscreen operator is used to customize the
halftone cell shape, frequency and angle of halftone cell alignment.
Some application programs, especially those in Microsoft Windows
environment, use the setscreen operator for pattern filling or crosshatch
filling. If you select pattern or crosshatch fill that is generated by
the PostScript setscreen operator, GoScript will print the pattern as
solid black fill.
For Microsoft Word Users:
-------------------------
If you use GoScript to print Microsoft Word 4.0 output, you must
set the VMSize field in GSCONFIG.CFG file to 150 or higher.
For Software Publishing Corp. First Publisher Users:
---------------------------------------------------
If you use GoScript to print PostScript language output file from
First Publisher Version 2.0, you must modify the PostScript prolog file
or the print file as follows:
1. Locate the PostScript prolog file LASERDEF.PS
2. Make a backup copy of this file and keep it in a safe place
for reference
3. Use a text editor or the plain ASCII mode of your word processor
to change line 123 and line 131 to the following:
Line 123 was:
(%stdin) (r) file _h 4 add _w 8 div cvi mul string readhexstring pop
Change line 123 to:
currentfile _h 4 add _w 8 div cvi mul string readhexstring pop
Line 131 was:
/_fl (%stdin) (r) file def
Change line 131 to:
/_fl currentfile def
4. Save the modified PostScript prolog file and use First Publisher
as normal. The modified prolog file should be automatically
attached to the beginning of your print file.
5. If you modify the PostScript prolog file, you only have to perform
the modification once. If you modify your print file directly,
then you have to perform the same modification on every print file
that you generate.
You can generate a PostScript print file with First Publisher as follows:
1) Use FP's PRINTER program to install the PostScript printer
(GS users select the Apple LaserWriter; GS Plus users select
the Apple LaserWriter Plus; then select printer port LPT1)
2) REName MASTER.FNT DOTMATRIX.FNT and REName APLASER.FNT MASTER.FNT
(see FP manual for further information)
3) REName UARTPAT2.PS UARTPAT2.OLD and create a new file named UARTPAT2.PS
which needs to be empty and resident in the PUB directory
4) create your document
5) click on FILE, PRINT; enter a filename within the DESTINATION window;
click on STANDARD (never SMOOTHED); click on OK
6) after FP initializes the LaserWriter and downloads the font macros,
it will print to the disk filename.
7) Exit FP, change directory to the GoScript directory and print with
the follwing command:
GS \PUB\filename
UPDATES TO DOT-MATRIX PRINTER DRIVERS:
------------------------------------
The standard resolution for the IBM ProPrinter and Epson FX
printer drivers is now set at 240 horizontal by 216 vertical
dot-per-inch. These drivers also support the low resolution
of 120 horizontal by 72 vertical with /L option on the command
line or in the DRIVER paramter of the configuration file GSCONFIG.CFG
Refer to Appendix C: Printers of the GoScript User's Guide for
instrucions to activate the low resolution mode.
FIX FOR DOUBLE PAGE EJECT WITH SINGLE SHEET FEEDER:
---------------------------------------------------
If you are using GoScript on a printer with single sheet feeder,
or in manual feed mode, and you are experiencing double page eject
for each printed page, you may perform the following step to
disable the FormFeed command that GoScript sends to your printer at
the end of each page.
Use a text editor or the plain ASCII mode of your word processor to
add the following parameter in the configuration file GSCONFIG.CFG
as follows:
FORMFEED = NO
ADDITIONAL GOSCRIPT PRINTER DRIVERS:
------------------------------------
Three additional printer drivers have been included in this release of
GoScript: PT90.DRV for Siemens PT-90 ink jet printers, INSETPCL.DRV
for use with fax board in conjunction with Hijaack software from
Inset Systems, Inc., LJIID for HP LaserJet IID Duplex printer.
Use a text editor or the plain ASCII mode of your word processor to
enter the name of the driver and any optional driver parameters on
the DRIVER entry in the configuration file GSCONFIG.CFG as follows:
DRIVER = PT90.DRV
1. Siemens PT-90 Ink Jet Printer
Filename: PT90.DRV
Supports 240 dot per inch printing on Letter, Legal, A4 and B size paper.
Supports continuous feed paper. Supports manual paper feed when selected
during the installation process. To use manual feed, remove the paper
supply from the printer and insert each sheet as prompted during printing.
Supports printing of multiple copies of a page; since each page must be
sent to the printer individually, speed will be limited.
The printable area on each page is slightly smaller than that of the
Apple LaserWriter and many PostScript printers due to internal limitations
of the printer. Alignment of the printed image on the paper is
achieved by mechanical adjustment of the paper feed tractors.
2. Special driver for Inset Systems, Inc.
Filename: INSETPCL.DRV
This is a special driver at 196 dot per inch resolution to be
used with Hijaack software from Inset Systems, Inc. for
fax transmission.
Please refer to instructions that came with Hijaak for usage.
3. LaserJet IID Duplex Printer
Filename: LJIID.DRV
Configure the Duplex IID printer to print in duplex mode.
Configure GoScript for the LaserJet IID Duplex printer driver.
Now you can use GoScript to print both sides of the page on the
HP LaserJet IID Duplex printer. The printer must have at least
2MB of expansion memory.
4. Intel Visual Edge System
This release of GoScript supports the Intel Visual Edge printing
system via EMS Graphics Manager. GoScript requires at least 2 Mbytes
of expanded memory to work with Visual Edge system.
a. Install your Visual Edge hardware and software.
b. Load the Visual Edge driver VE.COM
c. Load GRAPHMGR for printer port that you have selected
to be used with GoScript, for example:
GRAPHMGR /LPT1
d. Configure GoScript for the HP LaserJet Series II driver,
and the LPT port specified via the GRAPHMGR command
Then you can use GoScript to print full page at 300 dots per inch
on the HP LaserJet Series II printer, without adding expansion
memory to the LaserJet Series II printer.
