Press <F7> or <C> to change the current element. You cannot change the
element name, the length of a numeric element, or the format of a
character element.
WARNING
If you change an element file which has already been used to create a table
file for an application, you may corrupt your data files.

The Maintenance Station is the place to define the elements in the database.
You must define the name, type, and length of each element. You can also
enter a descriptive name to be used as a display prompt and a help message
that briefly describes the element.

The View Station is a report generator that documents the element file.
The report can include all the elements in the file, or you can choose a
subset of elements based on element name or data type.

The Sort Station allows you to organize the element display. You can sort
the file by element name, type, or length, in ascending or descending order.
Sorting only rearranges the display of the file. To rearrange the element
file permanently, you must first sort it and then save it under another name
using the SAVE AS command.

The Load menu lets you display a subset of the element file. You can select
the subset based on element name, type, or length. CLEAR calls a blank
display and ALL loads the entire element file. Load does not affect the
storage of the element file.

You can import dBASE III/III+ data files (.DBF
files) into the element file. PRO-C looks for
these files in the EXE subdirectory.
Logical fields (type L) must be converted
to Character fields (type C) before you
import the dBASE file.

PRO-C template files (.TPL extension) are
data definition files created by PRO-C
version 1.3x. PRO-C looks for .TPL files

Elements imported from PRO-C template files

format masks. Format masks revert to the
default mask, but can be edited once the
file has been imported.

another. PRO-C looks for element files in

You can import element definitions that are

The format mask determines how the data stored
in the element is displayed on screens and in
reports. You cannot change the masks for character

The following characters have special meanings

+ show "+" if positive, "-" if negative
- show "-" if negative
. decimal place location
, thousands separator
All other characters are output literally.
Date elements have other mask characters.
DD date
MM month number
YY year's last two digits

The element length is the number of bytes used
to store it. For character elements, this is
equivalent to the number of characters the
element can hold.
Character fields (types A, C, E, and P) can
hold a maximum of 254 characters, and have a
