GETTING STARTED
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The Back Room Technician II program will run on an IBM
compatible computer system with one of these disk drive arrange-
ments:
o at least TWO 5-1/4" floppy drives (One drive for the Program
disk and the other drive for the Data disk), OR,
o at least ONE 3-1/2" micro drive, OR,
o ONE hard drive (and one disk drive to initially LOAD the BRT
II to the hard disk.)
Your computer must have at least 256K of free memory.
COPY PROTECTION INFORMATION
The Back Room Technician II program is copy protected soft-
ware; however, the copy protection system should not interfere
with the normal operation of the BRT II program or any other
program on your computer system. The master disk will allow you
to make a total of two valid working copies of the BRT II program
at any one time.
Unlike some copy protection systems, you do not have to use
the original master disk as a key disk. Once you have made a
valid working copy, you will be able to run it "as is." There
are, however, a couple of things you should note. 1) If you
format a disk that has a valid copy of the BRT II program, you
will lose that copy. If you must reformat, always uninstall the
software first. (See Appendix 2.) 2) If you restore a tape or
floppy disk backup of your hard disk after your hard disk has
crashed, the copy will no longer be valid. You must reinstall
the program from the master disk to get another working copy.
The copy protection system will not INTERFERE with routine
backing up of the hard disk; however, it does not do any good to
restore a copy of the program once your hard disk has been re-
placed or reformatted.
BRT II User's Manual Page 4
NOTATIONAL CONVENTIONS
This section explains several of the symbols and phrases
used in the Back Room Technician II User's Manual.
Example Explanation
----------------------------------------------------------------
"TYPE ME" | Type the letters or numbers (without quotes)
| into your computer just as they appear
| in the manual.
|
<F1> | Letters or numbers between pointed brackets
| refer to a key on the keyboard. Do not
| type the brackets or letters -- just
| press the indicated key (function key
| "F1" in this case).
|
"TYPE ME" <Enter>| Type the letters "TYPE ME", then press the
| enter key.
----------------------------------------------------------------
|
|
"Program Disk" | A 5-1/4" disk set consists of a "Program" and
or | a "Data" disk. You can find these titles
"Data Disk" | printed on the respective disk's label.
|
| The single 3-1/2" disk for the BRT II is both
| a "Program" and a "Data" disk all in one.
| Wherever the manual references a
| "Program" or "Data" disk, use the single
| 3-1/2" disk instead.
|
"MASTER" disk | The "Master" program or data disk refers
| to the BRT II disk(s) you received
| from Kettley Publishing Co.
|
"COPY" disk | A "Copy" disk is one of your disks that
| contains (or will contain) a working
| copy of the BRT II master disk(s).

LOADING THE BACK ROOM TECHNICIAN II
The Back Room Technician II is copy protected software. DOS
commands, such as "COPY," "XCOPY," "DISKCOPY," or file transfer
utilities such as "LapLink" will not create or transfer a working
BRT II copy. Use LOAD, which is found on the Program disk, to:
1) Install the BRT II to a hard drive, or
2) Copy the BRT II to floppy (5-1/4") disks or
a micro (3-1/2") disk.
LOADING TO A HARD DRIVE:
1. Switch on your computer.
Boot up with DOS version 2.1 or greater -- DOS 3.0 or great-
er for 3-1/2" disk users. If your computer normally runs a
menu system or other program when it is turned on, you must
exit the program to get to the DOS prompt.
IMPORTANT: If you have a disk cache program, it should be
disabled before installing or uninstalling the BRT II pro-
gram. (If you do not know what a disk cache program is,
don't worry - chances are you don't have one.)
2. Place the Program disk in drive A.
You can use another drive instead of the A drive. Wherever
this manual refers to the A prompt or the A drive, substi-
tute the appropriate drive letter.
3. Type "A:" <Enter>
to get to the A prompt.
4. Type "LOAD" <Enter>
The LOAD menu screen should then appear.
5. Type "1" <Enter>
to load the BRT II to a hard drive. From this point on,
follow the instructions on the screen. You will be asked
for the drive letter of your hard drive (most likely "C")
and for the subdirectory name ("BRT", unless you choose
another). The program will then transfer the files to your
hard drive and ask you to confirm that you want to move the
copy protection. If you get any error messages, note the
error information and number (if any) and refer to the
Trouble Shooting section of this manual (Appendix 1).
This completes the loading process.
BRT II User's Manual Page 6
COPYING TO FLOPPY (5-1/4") DISKS OR TO A MICRO (3-1/2") DISK:
You will need TWO blank formatted 5-1/4" disks, OR
You will need ONE blank formatted 3-1/2" disk.
--> See Appendix 3 for formatting instructions. <--
5. Type "2" <Enter>
to copy the BRT II to floppy disks or a micro disk. From
this point on, follow the instructions on the screen. You
will be asked for the letter of the drive to which the files
will be copied. The copying process will go faster if you
have a second floppy or micro disk drive, but you can copy
to the same drive. The program will transfer the files over
to your working copy disks and ask you to confirm that you
want to move the copy protection. Whenever you are asked to
swap disks, pay close attention to which disk is asked for.
If you get any error messages, note the error information
and number (if any) and refer to the Trouble Shooting sec-
tion of this manual (Appendix 1).
This completes the loading process.
BRT II User's Manual Page 7
STARTING THE PROGRAM
1. Start your computer with DOS 2.1 or greater (DOS 3.0 for 3-
1/2" disk users).
2. A) To run the BRT II from 5-1/4" disks:
Insert the Program disk in drive A and the Data disk in
drive B. Type
"A:" <Enter> {get to the A:> prompt}
"BT" <Enter>
B) To run the BRT II from a 3-1/2" disk:
Insert the 3-1/2" disk in drive A (or drive B).
Type
"A:" <Enter> {or B: <Enter>, depending on
which drive has the BRT II disk}
"BT" <Enter>
C) To run the BRT II from a Hard drive:
Type
"C:" <Enter> {get to the BRT II drive}
"CD \BRT" <Enter> {get to the BRT II subdirectory}
"BT" <Enter>
D) To run the Back Room Technician II from a MENU on a hard
disk, consult your menu system's manual.
3. At this point, the program should start running and the
banner screen and title screen should appear. (If an error
message appears instead, see the Trouble Shooting Section.)
Press any key to get to the MAIN MENU. The following items
should appear on the screen:
"1) VIEW or PRINT TEXT FILES" - this allows you to select
the files you want to examine on the screen or print on your
printer. This will be explained later on page 12.
"2) CONFIGURING YOUR BRT II" - this runs the configuration
program. This will be explained later on page 9.
"3) UPDATING YOUR BRT II" - this explains the procedure for
keeping the BRT II files up to date.
"4) KETTLEY PUBLISHING PRODUCTS" - this lists and explains
our other products.
"X) << Exit to DOS >>" - this ends the program execution.
BRT II User's Manual Page 8
The first menu item, "1) VIEW or PRINT TEXT FILES," should
be highlighted. (This highlighted area is called a "light-
bar" throughout this manual.) If nothing is highlighted or
if the screen looks washed out, you most likely have a
monochrome display attached to a color display card. This
arrangement is common with laptop computers. Press the
letter "X" to exit the program and restart the program by
typing
"BT /BW" <Enter>
This will force the program to use the black and white color
combination. (For a list of this and other command line
options, see Appendix 4)
BRT II User's Manual Page 9
CONFIGURING THE PROGRAM
The configuration program allows you to select a printer,
set up a title page and change various other options for the BRT
II program. To run the configuration program, select "2) CONFIG-
URING YOUR BRT II" from the main menu of the BRT II program.
SELECT PRINTER
This allows you to select your printer make and model so the
program will use bold face and underlining when printing reports.
The list of printers in this section is large enough so that they
will not all fit on the screen at once - only three columns at a
time will be shown.
Use the arrow keys to move the lightbar around on the printer
list until you find the name of your printer. Alternately, type
the first letter in the name of your printer. This will cause
the lightbar to jump to the first printer name that starts with
that letter. When the lightbar is over your printer's name,
press the <Enter> key. You may see a list of different models
made by your printer's manufacturer. If so, move the lightbar
over your model and press <Enter>.
If your particular model is not included in the list of printers,
try a closely related one and print out a file or two to see if
parts of the report are in bold face. If not, try another one.
You may also enter the codes for turning on and off bold face and
underlining directly by selecting the second choice on the print-
er list, "2) CUSTOM PRINTER SETUP." Select this item and press
the <F1> key for further instructions. You will need to refer to
your printer manual for the appropriate codes to enter here. If
none of these methods works, or if you would rather skip the bold
face and underlining altogether, select the first item on the
list, "1) GENERIC PRINTER." This will turn off the bold face and
underlining feature.
SELECT SCREEN COLORS
This menu item will appear only if you have a color display card.
(CGA, EGA, VGA, etc.) If the colors on the screen do not appeal
to you, try some of the other color combinations. Move the
lightbar to one of the four color combinations and press the
<Enter> key. Continue doing this until you find the combination
you like best.
BRT II User's Manual Page 10
SELECT PRINTING OPTIONS
The BRT II allows you to choose from various printing options
such as including a title page or table of contents with your
report, including your name or your client's name at the top of
each page, numbering the pages, etc. The default choices that
are used each time you run the program may be changed here. For
a description of the various printing options, press the <F1>
key.
SET UP TITLE PAGE
One of the BRT II printing options is the inclusion of a title
page to precede the reports generated by the program. In this
section you may enter the default text, such as your name and
address, that will appear each time you print a report. When you
print your reports, this text may be temporarily changed, but
each time you start a new report, the defaults you enter here
will appear. For more information and for a description of the
title page format, press the <F1> key.
CHANGE DISCLAIMER LANGUAGE
Another BRT II printing option is the inclusion of a disclaimer
at the end of your reports. We strongly urge you to use this
option. This section allows you to change the wording of the
disclaimer.
CHANGE DATA DISK LOCATION
In most cases, you will not need to enter anything here. If you
have the 5-1/4" version of the BRT II program and have only a
single floppy drive and a hard drive that is short on space, you
can copy the contents of the data disk to your hard drive and run
the program from the floppy drive. If the program is unable to
locate the files from the data disk, you can enter the location
here. For example, if the data disk files were copied to the C
drive in the BRT subdirectory, enter "C:\BRT".
BRT II User's Manual Page 11
SELECT SPECIAL PRINTING OPTIONS
In most cases, nothing here will need to be changed.
1) PRINTER PORT - Your printer is most likely attached to LPT1.
If you have a serial printer, or the printer you wish to use
is on another parallel port, you may specify the port here.
2) LEFT MARGIN - The default left margin is eight spaces. If
you set up your printer to print in condensed type and wish
to center your reports, enter a larger number. If a number
much larger than eight is used with normal type, the lines
may run off of the page.
3) TOP MARGIN - this is normally zero lines. If you set up
your printer to print more than the normal 6 lines per inch,
try a larger number to start the report down a bit further
on the page.
4) INITIALIZATION STRING - An initialization string is a set of
codes that is sent to your printer each time you print a
report. It can be used to select a certain font (if your
printer supports it), print in near letter quality mode,
etc. You will need to refer to your printer manual for the
appropriate codes. For more information, press <F1>.
5) EXIT STRING - An exit string is used at the end of the
report to undo whatever may have been set up with the ini-
tialization string. For more information, press <F1>.
6) IBM GRAPHICS CAPABILITY - Interspersed throughout the BRT II
files are "box" characters used for making boxes and charts.
Some printers are able to print these characters and others
are not. If you put an "N" here, dashes and vertical char-
acters will be sent to your printer as substitutes. If you
put in a "Y" and you find that your printer prints strange
characters where the lines should be, change this setting
back to "N".
SAVE CHANGES AND EXIT
When you are finished making changes in the configuration pro-
gram, select this to save your changes and return to the BRT II
main program. If you decide that you would rather not save your
changes, press <Esc> instead. You will be asked to confirm that
you want to exit the program without saving your changes.
BRT II User's Manual Page 12
VIEWING AND PRINTING BRT II FILES
To view or print the BRT II text files, select the first
item on the main BRT II menu, "1) VIEW or PRINT TEXT FILES." A
list of some of the available BRT II files will appear on the
screen. Because of the large number of files, only some of them
will show on the screen at a time. To see the other file names,
press the right arrow key a few times. The file list will scroll
to the left. The arrow keys (left, right, up, down) may be used
to move the lightbar around in the list of files. Another way to
do this is to press the number of the section of the desired
file. For example, if the file you want to view or print is in
section 6, type "6". This will cause the lightbar to jump to the
first file in section 6. Continue pressing "6" until you get to
the desired file.
VIEWING FILES
To view a file, move the lightbar, as described above, to the
desired file name and press the <Enter> key. Use the up and down
arrow keys and the <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys to move through the
file. To return to the file list, press the <Esc> key or the
<Enter> key.
PRINTING FILES
One of three approaches may be used to print out the BRT II
files.
The first method can be used to print only one file at a time
without any of the printing options, such as page numbers, title
page, etc. To do this, view the file, as explained above, and
press the <F3> key. The file you are presently viewing will be
sent to the printer.
The second method allows full use of the various print options.
From the list of files, mark whichever files you want to print by
pressing the space bar at the file name. For example, if you
want to print files 1A, 1B, and 3G, move the lightbar to file 1A
and press the space bar. "1>" will appear to the left of the
file name (indicating it will print first) and the lightbar will
jump down to the next file name. Press the space bar again, move
the lightbar to file 3G, and press the space bar once again. If
you inadvertently mark a file you don't intend to print, move the
lightbar back over the file name and press the space bar again.
This will unmark it. Once the files have been marked for print-
BRT II User's Manual Page 13
ing, press the <PgDn> key to move on to the printing options
screen. Change any of the options you wish on this screen. If
you choose to include a title page or put a client's name at the
top of the screen, press <Enter> at the appropriate line to bring
up the title page screen or client name screen and type in any
needed changes. When finished changing the printing options,
move down to * DONE * at the bottom of the page, and press
<Enter>.
The third method is included for those who are used to previous
versions of the BRT II program in which the file numbers were
typed in by hand before printing. At the list of files, press
the <PgUp> key. A screen with several blanks will appear into
which the file codes, separated by commas, may be entered. For
example, to print files 1A, 1B, and 3G, type in "1A,1B,3G". When
finished entering the codes, press the <PgDn> key to return to
the list of files. Press the <PgDn> key once again to move on to
the printing options screen and proceed as described above.
SAVING AND RETRIEVING FILE PRINT ORDER
If you print out the same sequence of files often, you may save
the sequence for later recall by pressing <F5> at the BRT II file
list screen. If you have marked any files for printing, choose
"{SAVE}" to save the print order. Any print sequences that were
previously saved may be recalled from this same screen.
NOTE: In several places in the BRT II program, you are required
to press the <PgUp> or <PgDn> keys. On some keyboards, these
keys may be difficult to use. In such cases, press <F9> instead
of <PgUp> and press <F10> instead of <PgDn>.
BRT II User's Manual Page 14
APPENDIX ONE
TROUBLE SHOOTING
BRT II PROGRAM ERROR MESSAGES
1) This is an UNAUTHORIZED copy of a Kettley Publ. Program!
This message occurs if you used the DOS COPY command, DISK-
COPY, or another copying program instead of the LOAD program
to copy the master disk(s) onto your working copy. This can
also happen if the copy protection files were altered or
removed from your working copy after having successfully
loaded the program. When you run the LOAD program, two
files, EV21.SYS and EV22.SYS, are placed on your working
copy disk. These are hidden files and cannot normally be
changed or removed. But with some utility programs, it is
possible to do so. If these files were removed, you will
need to run the LOAD program again.
2) WARNING: the following file(s) were not found . . .
Your working copy is missing some of the required files, or
if you are running from 5-1/4" floppy disks, the program was
not able to locate your data disk. Check your working copy
for the files listed. If they are missing, copy them from
the original master disks.
3) Error 14: Out of String Space
You have run out of RAM memory. If you have any RAM resi-
dent programs, disable them and run the BRT II program
again.
LOAD and UNINSTALL ERROR MESSAGES
1) Error 7030
This is usually accompanied by the message "Install
Count = 0." You are allowed only two working copies at a
time. If you try to make more, you will get this message.
2) Error 7051 or 7052
This occurs when the file attributes on the copy protection
files, EV21.SYS or EV22.SYS, have been changed. If they
were inadvertently changed with a utility program, change
the attributes back to hidden and read-only.
BRT II User's Manual Page 15
3) Error 7162
This occurs when the copy protection system cannot find room
on the working copy disk to put the copy protection files.
Your working copy disk may be full or have a bad sector
where the copy protection files need to go, or there could
be a hardware problem.
4) Error 7170
This message happens if you try to install the program on a
working copy disk that already has a valid copy of the
program. Try running the program on your working copy - it
should work. This message may also occur if you restored a
backup onto a hard drive and the backup program restored the
copy protection files. If you get an unauthorized copy
message when you try to run the BRT II program, this may be
the case. Call technical support - (714) 752-8613.
5) Error 9009
This indicates a hardware problem. Contact technical sup-
port - (714) 752-8613.
PRINTER PROBLEMS
1) Printer Prints Illegibly or "Strangely"
The most common reason for improper or strange printing is
that the wrong printer was chosen in the BRT II Configura-
tion Program. If the BRT II is told that it is printing to
an EPSON FX-80 printer but in reality is printing to an HP
LaserJet, the output will probably be illegible. Another
possibility is that you ran another program before running
the BRT II, and that program set up your printer a particu-
lar way but did not reset it. Turn off the power to your
printer, turn it on, and try printing again.
2) Strange Characters are Printed Where Lines Should Be
Run the configuration program and select "S) SELECT SPECIAL
PRINTING OPTIONS." Then select "6) IBM GRAPHICS
CAPABILITY." Make sure this is set to "N".
3) The Printer Does Not Print Anything
The problem could be very simple. Make sure the printer is
turned on, is on line, is not out of paper, the cables are
securely plugged in, and it does not report an error condi-
tion. If one of these is not the problem, turn off the
power to your printer, turn it on, and try printing again.
If you still do not get anything, try printing from another
program. If you have the same lack of results, there is a
problem with your computer or printer.
BRT II User's Manual Page 16
4) Nothing Prints and Printer Problem Message Flashes Rapidly
This is a rare problem that can happen when the program
sends text to a printer faster than it can handle. Exit the
program and start it again by typing
"BT /Dn" <Enter>,
where "n" is a number from 1 to 255. For example, "BT/D25".
Try different numbers to see if the delay command will solve
the problem. Remember to use the /D command each time you
run the BRT II program.
BRT II User's Manual Page 17
APPENDIX TWO
UNINSTALLING THE BRT II PROGRAM
Uninstalling a valid copy of the BRT II program does two
things: 1) it increments the install count on your master disk so
you can make a new working copy, and 2) it renders the old copy
inoperable. You may need to run this program if you sell your
computer and don't want your copy of the program to go with it,
or if you are planning to reformat a hard drive.
1. Switch on your computer.
Boot up with DOS version 2.1 or greater -- DOS 3.0 or great-
er for 3-1/2" disk users. If your computer normally runs a
menu system or other program when it is turned on, you must
exit the program to get to the DOS prompt.
IMPORTANT: If you have a disk cache program, it must be
disabled before installing or uninstalling the BRT II pro-
gram. (If you do not know what a disk cache program is, you
probably don't have one.)
2. Place the Program disk in drive A.
3. Type "A:" <Enter> {to get to the A prompt}
4. Type "UNINSTALL" <Enter>
The uninstall program will start running. Follow the in-
structions on the screen. You will be asked for the drive
letter of the working copy. If your working copy is on a
hard drive, type in the letter of your hard drive. If you
are uninstalling from a 5-1/4" or 3-1/2" floppy disk, enter
the letter of the drive you intend to put the working copy
in. When the program is finished transferring the copy
protection back to the master disk, it should show the
message,
Current Available Install Count = x.
The number on the screen (represented by "x" here) is the
remaining number of times you can install a copy of the BRT
II program. If the above message does not appear and an
error message is displayed, note the error number and refer
to the trouble shooting section.
BRT II User's Manual Page 18
APPENDIX THREE
FORMATTING 5-1/4" AND 3-1/2" FLOPPY DISKETTES
To load the BRT II program onto floppy disks, you must first
have either two 5-1/4" blank formatted disks or a single 3-1/2"
blank formatted disk ready for copying. The following instruc-
tions will explain how to format either size disk.
1. Switch your computer on. Boot off of a DOS disk, unless you
have a hard drive on your computer.
2. When you get to the DOS prompt, type in "FORMAT A:" <Enter>.
You can substitute another drive letter for A:. DO NOT
format the disk with the /S option to make the disk boot-
able. There would not be enough room left on the formatted
disk for the BRT II.
3. You will now need to insert a brand new disk, or one that
contains information that you no longer need, into drive A:.
After inserting the disk, press any key to begin formatting.
4. When your disk is finished, you will be asked if you want to
format another disk. If you have the 5-1/4" version, type
"Y" <Enter> to format your second disk. If you have the 3-
1/2" version, type "N" <Enter>.

SUMMARY OF COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
Command line options are used when starting the BRT II
program from the DOS prompt to request various program options.
To use a command line option, type it in right after "BT" when
you run the program. For example, to use the /BW option, type in
"BT /BW" <Enter>. (Note that there is a space between "BT" and
"/BW".) You can combine more than one option on the command
line. The following is a description of each command line op-
tion.
1) /BW
Black & White. This forces the program to use screen colors
it normally uses on a black and white monitor. If you have
a laptop computer, you may not be able to see a lightbar or
the screen may look washed out. Try running the program
with this option.
2) /M
Mouse support. If you have a Microsoft compatible mouse,
you can use it to move through the program more easily than
with the keyboard. Start the program with this command line
option to enable mouse support.
3) /Dn
Print delay. In some rare cases, the program may send data
to your printer faster than it can handle. To slow it down,
start the program with this option. the "n" represents a
number from 1 to 255. ("/D255" would cause the longest
delay.)
4) /SU filename
Setup (configuration) file. This is most useful with the
network version, but can be used with the normal version of
the program. The changes you make in the configuration
program (see page 9) are saved to a file called "BRT.DEF".
To start the program using a configuration file other than
BRT.DEF, use this command line option. For example, if you
have two printers, you can select your first printer in the
configuration program, exit to DOS, and rename BRT.DEF (with
DOS commands) to BRT1.DEF. Do the same thing for your
second printer, only rename the new BRT.DEF file to
BRT2.DEF. To use your first printer, run the program by
typing in "BT /SU BRT1.DEF" <Enter>. To use the second
printer, run the program with "BT /SU BRT2.DEF" <Enter>.
