Y-N-L
The pronunciation of these consonants is slightly different from the pronunciation for the corresponding English consonants "n," "t," and "d." The Russian sounds are dental, because the tip of the tongue touches the fore part of the upper teeth. Place the tip of the tongue against the lower teeth and the blade of the tongue firmly against the back of the upper teeth. Remember to be firm!!!!!
This sound is much harder than the English equivalent "l." The important thing is to put the tip of your tongue firmly on the back of the upper teeth, while raising the back of your tongue toward the back of the roof of your mouth. Your tongue will be "U" shaped, and will be very tense..y
This is similar to the English "p" but is not aspirated. Aspirated sounds are those that produce a puff of air (think of "pop"). Concentrate on controlling that puff of air.
This sound does not have a corresponding English sound. Start with the "k" sound, but allow the air to escape between back of your tongue and the back of the roof of your mouth. Pay attention to eliminating the sharp transition at the beginning of the sound.
Like the Russian "k," this sounds have two points of focus; both the tip and back part of the tongue are raised, forming a "U" shape. Curl the tip of the tongue back slightly, and jut the lower jaw in slightly. These sounds are always hard.............
This long soft consonant is pronounced softer than the English consonant combination "sh ch" in the phrase "Danish charter." During articulation the tip and fore part of the center of the tongue form a narrow opening near the teethridge.
The cardinals and ordinals from one to ten are irregular in English, but regular in russian. Ordinals are formed by adding "jq" or "sq" to the end of the cardinal.

Recording and Playing Back
RussianTutor will allow you to record your voice and play it back for comparison with a native speaker. All that you need is a sound board equipped with recording capabilities, and a microphone that is attached to the "input" port on the sound card. Consult the documentation that came with your sound board for configuration information.
To record, click on the "Record" button below. To play back your recording, click the RIGHT mouse button anywhere in the Window. To record something new, just click on the record button again (your old recording will be lost). You are limited to recordings of 10 seconds..your praise and comments to:

Installing the Cyrillic Fonts
The TrueType font "Cyrillic" is distributed with RussianTutor, and is used to display all Russian text. The tutor will work without the fonts installed in Windows, but if you want to use them with other programs you must install them with the "Fonts" manager in the "Control Panel" program.
To install the fonts, bring up the Fonts dialog box under the Control Panel. Then click on the "Add" button. Select the RussianTutor directory in the "directory" listbox; four Cyrillic TrueType fonts will be listed in the "List of Fonts" field. Click on the "Select All" button and then "OK." The fonts will then be listed in the "Installed Fonts" field.
If you have problems with font installation, consult the Windows Help file under the "Fonts" listing.r directory during installation, and must be copied to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and then added to Windows from the Font Manager in the Windows Control Panel.
The Cyrillic TrueType fonts distributed with RussianTutor were designed by Bill Tavolga.
For more information see the file CYRTTF.DOC in the program directory.tory.

In this "trilled" version of the English "r," the tip of the tongue vibrates against the ridge behind the upper teeth (the alveolar ridge). This is called "ballistic" articulation because the tongue is not controlled after it is "thrown" toward the alveolar ridge. Don't overdo it..
Numerals and cardinals beginning from 10 are formed with the help of the suffix "wfnm," and ordinals are formed with the suffix "sq.""

This Russian vowel has no English equivalent, although it is similar to the "i" sound in the word "sick." The tip of the tongue is raised toward the palate, and the back of the tongue is pulled back and tensed.
The Russian alphabet contains 33 letters, with 9 vowels and 26 consonants. This lesson will show the pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet.
Notice that some letters look and sound the same as their English equivalent, while others look familiar but sound differently. Pay attention to the look of the letters, but don't try to memorize all of them just yet..t try to memorize all of them just yet.????????????
Lesson 4: Russian Namessation Con
Russian names, like English names, have long and short forms. Sometimes they hardly correspond in pronunciation; for example "Fyfcnfcbz" and "Yfcnz." In the following lesson you will learn the long and short versions, although there is often more than one short version.
As with previous lessons, pay close attention to the sound of the words, and don't worry too much about memorizing them..
Lesson 5: More Pronunciationn
Again we look at the alphabet, but from another view. Most of the vowels have similar sounds in the English language and we'll show the equivalents. Consonants are more difficult, because some of them do not have similar sounds in English. But as soon as your ear gets used to them, pronunciation will become automatic.
You may have noticed that Russian also uses clusters of two or three consonants. Pay attention to these combinations...
Lesson 7: Sentences with Definitions
In this lesson, we will give some examples of simple dialogues. Pay attention to the word order, and notice that the word order is the same for both declarative and interrogative questions. In general, it is the intonation that differentiates between a statement and question in Russian.
You may play the sentences and some of the individual words. Note that the individual word pronunciations are taken from the context of the sentences, so they will have some inflection............
Lesson 6: Cardinals and Ordinals
Fortunately, the Russians use the Arabic numbering system, so you do not have to learn a new way of counting.
Unfortunately, they have different names for the numbers. A few of the numbers have similar sounds, but most numbers are not similar at all.

This lesson covers the main differences between pronunciation of English and Russian letters. You should have already covered some pronunciation, and should have some feel for the sound of Russian language.
One of the difficulties in learning Russian pronunciation is discovering where to put your tongue, teeth, and lips. This lesson will help your pronunciation by showing animations of the organs of speech.
Notice that most Russian consonants have hard and soft equivalents; this introductory lesson ignores this for the most part, but you should listen for hard and soft consonants.................

About RussianTutorr
Russian Tutor is designed to teach the rudiments of the Russian language. To fully enjoy the program, you need a Media Control Interface (MCI) compatible sound board. This will allow you to hear the recordings of letter and word pronunciation.
This demonstration program, designed by Michael Pearce and Irina Volkova, is distributed as shareware. Comments and feedback are welcome. Because of the large size of WAV files, not all of the lessons are distributed with the program. To receive the rest of the lessons (in the form of WAV files) on diskette, send $25 to Atomic Software. Software
