ocr: SUDBURY One of the world's major nickel deposits is at Sudbury,in Ontario, Canada. It was discovered in 1883, during the laying of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Along with the nickel, the metals copper, cobalt, and platinum are also found at Sudbury. It is thought that the deposit formed as the result of a huge meteorite colliding with Earth 570 million years ago. The heat generated by the impact melted the crustal rocks in the area to form magma (molten rock). As the magma cooled, the nickel minerals formed and settled in layers. Some of the nickel may have come from the meteorite.
