ocr: MOGOK VALLEY Organized ruby mining in the Mogok Valley, in the mountainous Kathe district of Burma (Myanmar), dates back to the late 1600s. Burma produces the world's finest rubies, the most sought-after being those with a deep red ("pigeon's blood")color. The rubies are washed out of white marble in the mountains, transported downstream by river, and deposited in river gravel. Today, mining in the Mogok Valley takes place in small pits 6-12 - m (20-40ft) deep. Gravel is removed from the pits and then washed to separate the gemstones from the waste.
