ocr: IRISH SEA The Morecambe natural gas field, in the Irish Sea - off the coast of north west England, was discovered in 1974. Today, five wells reach about 1 km (1/2 mile) into the seabed to exploit the natural gas tield. The drilling platforms on top of the wells stand in 33 m (108ft)of water. Upto170 - workers are needed to operate the wells, and they all live on one of the platforms. The extracted natural gas is transported by pipeline to England. Natural gas from the Morecambe field is mainly composed of methane.
