New features in VRTest 3.2
--------------------------
This version of VRTest has the following new features:
* View Boot Block of DF0:/DF1:. I had the routines all written
up but there were a few bugs. I fixed them up and implemented
a working View Boot Block option. Now you can get rid of View
Boot, VRTest 3.2 is about HALF the size of ViewBoot and it has
more menus, and a full virus checker plus KILL options!
* Install Disk in DF0:/DF1:. This does a 'clean Install' of
the disk in drive DF0:/DF1:. The install which is done is
much cleaner than the Install command.
* View RAM now shows 2048 bytes starting at a new location, $7E7FE.
Before it only showed 256 bytes, and started at $7EC00. Since
testing the ByteBandit virus on my 512K machine, I found it goes
into $7E7FE. And from what I've heard, the Kent Team 'virus' goes
deeper than 256 bytes after $7EC00, so I can almost guarantee
you'll see the Kent Team if it's there. Anyways, I don't know
if it's a real virus, I don't think it infects disks.
* Clean RAM now cleans 2048 bytes starting at $7E7FE. This is an
important and POWERFUL improvement. I have tried killing the
ByteBandit on my 512K machine, and the machine GURU'ed immediately,
HOWEVER, when the system booted back up, THE VIRUS WAS GONE! It
didn't infect any disks I tempted it to, so I think it got killed.
If you have an expanded Amiga, then don't worry about the ByteBandit
because it doesn't work properly with extra RAM (if you try and boot
with an infected BB disk the machine will GURU immediately after reading
in the boot block).
I haven't tried killing the ByteWarrior virus, but it should work
if it's just a superset of ByteBandit.
This option will most likely also kill the Revenge virus but I
haven't tried it (I don't have that virus). If you have the
ByteWarrior, Revenge or any new viruses send them (address listed
below) to me so I can make sure VRTest 3.2 kills them!
Also, VRTest still kills SCA and the machine doesn't GURU - but
don't forget to set the vectors back to normal using the Set C/WCV
option before you re-boot otherwise the system will keep re-booting
or keep crashing. (This is because you've cleaned out the memory,
but the Exec vector is still pointing to that empty memory.)
* The Show C/WCV now monitors the Cold/Cool as well as WarmCapture
vectors, other than simply the ColdCapture (this was a bug fix
from 3.0 to 3.1, but the window title still read 'Cold-CV' in 3.1).
* The reset vectors option is now on a menu called 'Set C/WCV'.
It resets all the vectors mentioned above now, and the requester
now reads correctly (in V3.1 it said 'Do you wish to reset ExecBase's
ColdCapture vector', and if you hit 'Reset' it would reset all
the vectors - but I didn't change the text that said 'ColdCapture';
it should have been changed to Cold/Cool/Warm [which it is now].)
* VRTest now runs from the Workbench! Yeah! Just double-click
on its icon.
* When run from Workbench or CLI (without any switches), it now
automatically opens the Virus Monitoring window just like the
old -W switch did, except you don't have to type -W.
* If you want VRTest simply to dump 2048 bytes of $7E7FE from the
CLI, then you can use the new -S switch.
* The -A switch still exists, and does the same thing as before.
* When doing any type of dumping to the screen, VRTest automatically
goes into the normal character set even if it has been switched
into the alerternate character set. Before, it may have printed
the 'Press any key to continue...' in the alerternate character set.
* Much better background memory checking. I have re-written the
routines which constantly check memory, so that they will find
all viruses that exist at this time (and probably all future
ones unless someone finds more memory that is protected during
re-boot). Version 3.1's checking wasn't as thorough.
That's all the new features. I hope some of you will now like this
version better, and will spread it around, and abandon VirusX, which
doesn't have menus, is more than twice as big, and doesn't have
options that let you reset vectors and clean out memory for effective
killing.
I have written this virus checker so it will catch all current
viruses as well as FUTURE viruses. You don't have to keep getting
updates everytime a new virus is made.
Also, please send any new viruses to my BBS or to me directly,
so I can analyze them and test them with VRTest.
And finally - I am currently working on a public domain utility
which will give you 'disk protection against viruses'. I won't say
anymore, but it will be extremely useful. If you send me $10 and a
SASE, I will send you a disk with this utility BEFORE I release it,
as well as the latest version of VRTest.
NOTE: The $10 is the approximate price of a disk and shipping and
handling.
VRT is **NOT** Shareware; it is labelled as 'freely
distributable'.
