  7. Following files and drawers are parts of the LabelPrint package and have
  8. to be copied, when you copy LabelPrint.
  9.

  16. The program LabelPrint was written to allow you easily to print Labels for
  17. your disks. For that you have a great variety of options you can use
  18. to design your Labels.
  19. I wrote the program, because I was fed up with writing my Labels by hand.
  20. And so I decided to write a program making this task almost alone.
  21.  
  22. The version 2.5 of LabelPrint works together with all printers, so far as
  23. a suitable printer driver is used.
  24. The program contains some spezial features for the Epson LQ-850 and
  25. compatible printers. (explained later)
  26.  
  27.  
  28. How to start LabelPrint:
  29. ------------------------
  30.   You can start LabelPrint as well from the CLI as from the Workbench by
  31.   a double click on the icon.
  32.  
  33.  
  34. The menu-functions of LabelPrint:
  35. ---------------------------------
  36.   Afer starting LabelPrint the LabelPrint-window appears.
  37.   In its menu bar you see this menues:
  38.      (c), Spezial, Label, Print, Clear, Input, Output, Block
  39.  
  40.  (c):
  41.  ----
  42.   This menu has no use, it only contains the Copyright-notice.
  43.  
  44.  Spezial:
  45.  --------
  46.   -About: ...opens the information-window.
  47.  
  48.   -Prefs: ...opens the preferences-window. (explained later)
  49.  
  50.   -Config: ...contains ab submenu for controling all parameters of LabelPrint.
  51.            The program tries automatical to  read this parameters, when you
  52.            start it.
  53.            -Load: Load the parameters from the File
  54.                   'SYS:devs/LP-Configuration'.
  55.            -Save: Save the current parameters to the File
  56.                   'SYS:devs/LP-Configuration'.
  57.  
  58.   -Pause: ...closes the LabelPrint-window, opens a small window
  59.           in the left top edge and puts the program into a waiting state.
  60.           To continue the program click on the CONTINUE-gadget.
  61.           (This function is of great value if you want to work with the
  62.            workbench.)
  63.  
  64.   -Quit: ...quits the program, but before you are asked, if you really want
  65.          to quit it.
  66.  
  67.  Label:
  68.  ------
  69.   -Append: ...opens a submenu with subitem 'ASCII' in it.
  70.            This function opens a File-Requester, which allows you to
  71.            select a file, for saving the current entries to an ASCII-file.
  72.            (The File-Requester is described below.)
  73.            This function helps you to create great lists containing the files
  74.            of a lot of disks.
  75.  
  76.  -Save: ...contains a subitem with following functions:
  77.         (They also open the File-Requester.)
  78.         -Data: Saves all entries and parameters to the spezified file.
  79.         -ASCII: Saves all entries to the spezified ASCII-file.
  80.  
  81.  -Load: ...contains a submenu with the subitem 'Data' in it.
  82.         This function also opens the File-Requester to select a file, from
  83.         which old entries and parameters should be load.
  84.         You can only load files, that were save with the Data-function of
  85.         the Save submenu. (When you load entries the old ones get lost,
  86.         so make sure that you don't need them any more !)
  87.  
  88.  Print:
  89.  ------
  90.   -Sort List: With this menuitem you can define whether the program should
  91.               sort the entries or only remove the empty entries, when the
  92.               function SORT is activated.
  93.               The function can be activated or deactivated by choosing the
  94.               subitem ON or OFF.
  95.  
  96.   -First: With this function you can determine, if the files or dirs should
  97.           be printed first. When no type is selected, the entries are
  98.           printed without considering their type.
  99.  
  100.   -Dirstyle / Filestyle: With this two items you can determine how the
  101.           dirs / files are written.
  102.           If capital is activated, then all entries of the selected type
  103.           are written in capital letters. The small item effects, that
  104.           all entries of the selected type are written in small letters.
  105.           Mixed allows as well small letters as capital letter.
  106.  
  107.   -n times: ...opens a requester to determine how often the
  108.             label shoud be printed. (1 - 99)
  109.             The current number is written behind the menuitem ( ).
  110.  
  111.  Clear:
  112.  ------
  113.   -All: ...clears all entries after asking you, if you really want to clear
  114.         them.
  115.  
  116.   -Types: ...contains a submenu with following items:
  117.           -Files: ...clears all entries of the type file after a request.
  118.           -Dirs: ...clears all entries of the type dir after a request.
  119.           -.info: ...clears all entries with the ending '.info' (icons)
  120.                   after a request.
  121.  
  122.   -Double: ...clears all entries being ot the same type and having the same
  123.            name. (There's no difference made between small and capital
  124.            letters.)
  125.  
  126.   -Type: With this function you can determine of which type the cleared
  127.          entries should be.
  128.  
  129.   -Kill: With this function you can determine how the entries should be
  130.          killed when using the Kill-function (described below).
  131.          'Remove entry' removes the entry from the list, whereas
  132.          'Clear entry' only clears the string-gadget.
  133.  
  134.  Input:
  135.  ------
  136.   -Import: ...imports the current entries of the File-Requester to the
  137.            LabelPrint-window with rereading the directory. (Attention:
  138.            the old entries are clear automatically.)
  139.            This function is a very comfortable way of reading in a disk
  140.            or directory.
  141.  
  142.   -Add: ...has a similar function as Import, except it didn't clear the old
  143.         entries, but appends the new ones to the old ones.
  144.         With this function you can create lists containing the files of
  145.         some directories.
  146.  
  147.   -ReadIn: With this submenu you can determine what LabelPrint should
  148.            read in.
  149.            Possible types are:
  150.             -Files
  151.             -Dirs (directories)
  152.             -.info (files ending with '.info')
  153.            At least one type should be activated, because otherwise nothing
  154.            will be read in.
  155.  
  156.   -Sort: ...determines in which way the entries should be sorted.
  157.          If UP is selected, the entries are sorted in alphabetical order.
  158.          If DOWN is selected, the entries are sorted against alphabetical
  159.          order.
  160.  
  161.  Output:
  162.  -------
  163.   -Comment: ...opens the Comment-window for writing comments to the filelist.
  164.             (explained later)
  165.  
  166.   -Sign: With this submenu you can determine which sign should be printed 
  167.          before the entries:
  168.          You can choose between:  -   o
  169.                                   +   =
  170.                                   <   >
  171.                                   #  ' '
  172.          The selected sign is shown in front of the Entry-Gadgets.
  173.          
  174.   -In: With this function you can determine, either the entries should be
  175.        printed in 'Columns' or in 'Lines'.
  176.        This function only changes the sequence of the entries, but not the
  177.        number of columns and lines.
  178.  
  179.  Block:
  180.  ------
  181.   -Last: ...shows the last block (4). As LabelPrint is only able to show 30
  182.          entries at onces on the screen, I've created 4 blocks, so that you
  183.          can control 120 entries.
  184.  
  185.   -First: ...shows the first block (1).
  186.  
  187.   -'+': ...shows the next block.
  188.  
  189.   -'-': ...shows the block before.
  190.  
  191.  
  192. The gadget-functions of LabelPrint:
  193. -----------------------------------
  194.   On the LabelPrint-window you can see a lot of different gadgets. The
  195.   following section of the documentation explains their functions.
  196.  
  197.   -Close-gadget: This gadget is placed in the left part of the top border.
  198.     This gadget quits the programm. (same function as Quit in the Spezial-
  199.     menu)
  200.  
  201.   -DiskName-gadget: This string-gadget shows the name of the actual drawer.
  202.     In this gadget you can put in the name of a drawer or volume to read
  203.     in.
  204.  
  205.   -Drive-gadgets: This 6 gadgets are placed in the right bottom of the
  206.     LabelPrint-window. They contain the names of different volumes, that
  207.     are read in by clicking on the gadget. Attention, this will clear all
  208.     entries. (This function helps you to save work, because you don't need
  209.     to use the File-Requester.)
  210.  
  211.   -About-gadget: This gadget is placed in the right top of the window.
  212.     It will open the information-window. (same function as About of the
  213.     Spezial-menu)
  214.  
  215.   -Prefs-gadget: This gadget is placed right of the About-gadget and has
  216.     the function to open the Preferences-window. (same function as Prefs
  217.     of the Spezial-menu)
  218.  
  219.   -Entry-gadgets: This are 30 long gadgets in the middle of the window.
  220.     Each of this gadgets contains one entry, which you can change the way
  221.     you like it. The length of each entry is limited to 17 characters.
  222.     The maximum number of entries is 120 in 4 blocks.
  223.  
  224.   -EntryType-gadgets: Behind each Entry-gadget you see a small gadget with
  225.     a D or F in it. This 30 gadgets are the EntryType-gadgets, with this
  226.     gadgets you can change the type of each entry.
  227.     When clicking on one of the gadgets, there alternately appears a D or
  228.     F. D stands for directory, whereas F stands for file, so that you can
  229.     easily change or create a entry type.
  230.     The type of the empty Entry-gadgets is determined by the Type-item of
  231.     the Clear-menu.
  232.  
  233.   -'+'- / '-'-gadget: This two gadgets are placed in the left bottom of the
  234.     window. They have the function to increase / decrease the block number.
  235.     (same function as '+' / '-' in the Block-menu)
  236.  
  237.   -No.-gadget: This gadgets is placed right of the '-'-gadget and shows the
  238.     number of the active block (shown on the window). By typing in a number
  239.     between 1 and 4 you can change the active block.
  240.  
  241.   -'Kill Entries'-gadget: This gadget makes it possible to kill easily one
  242.     spezial entry. When clicking on the OFF-text, a ON-text appears showing
  243.     that the Kill-mode is active. When this mode is active you can kill an
  244.     entry by a click on its EntryType-gadget.
  245.     Make sure that you turn off this mode after use, or you could kill an
  246.     entry when you try to change its type.
  247.  
  248.   -Insert-gadget: This gadget makes it possible to insert an entry before
  249.     another. When clicking on the OFF-text, a ON-text appears showing that
  250.     the Insert-mode is active. When this mode is active you can insert an
  251.     entry before another by clicking on its EntryType-gadget.
  252.     The 'Insert'- and the 'Kill entries'-function exclude each other, so
  253.     that when you activate one the other is automtical deactivated.
  254.  
  255.   -Print-gadget: This gadget starts the printing of your labels. To print
  256.     them the program uses the current parameters. The number of prints is
  257.     determined by the function 'n times' of the Print-menu.
  258.  
  259.   -Sort-gadget: This gadget has the function to sort all entries.
  260.     The way and the direction can be determined by the menuitems 'Sort List'
  261.     and 'Sort' of the Input-menu.
  262.  
  263.   -Clear-gadget: This gadget has the function to clear all entries, after
  264.     asking you, if you really want it. (same function as All of the
  265.     Clear-menu)
  266.  
  267.   -'Append to'-gadget: This gadget contains the name of the file to that
  268.     the actual enties are appended in the ASCII-format.
  269.     Is automatically set after using 'Append ASCII' of the Label-menu.
  270.  
  271.   -Append-gadget: This gadget appends the actual entries to the file named
  272.     in the 'Append to'-gadget. If the file doesn't exist, the program will
  273.     create it. This function was made to create huge lists with the entries
  274.     of some disks by appending the entries several times to the same file.
  275.     (Saves work, because you don't have allways to use the File-Requester.)
  276.  
  277.   -'Read In'-gadget: This gadgets reads in the drawer named in the
  278.     DiskName-gadget. Before reading in a volume you have to add a double
  279.     point. (The same you can achieve in a more comfortable way by using the
  280.     Import-function of the Input-menu.)
  281.  
  282.  
  283. The File-Requester:
  284. -------------------
  285.   A lot of functions of LabelPrint working together with disks start the
  286.   File-Requester.
  287.   The File-Requester keeps the last directory and shows it, when started
  288.   again. Has no directory been selected, then the File-Requester shows a
  289.   list of the disks in your drives. This list also appears when clicking
  290.   on the gadget 'VOL'.
  291.   To read in a directory or volume you only have to click on its name.
  292.   The name of the directory read in is shown in the string-gadget 'Drawer:'.
  293.   When clicking on a file, the name is shown in the string-gadget 'File:'.
  294.   You also can type in a name direct in the 'File:'- or 'Drawer:'-gadget. 
  295.   To read in a directory press <RETURN> after typing the name in the
  296.   'Drawer:'-gadget.
  297.   By clicking on the gadget '/ DIR' the parent directory is read in, if it
  298.   exists.
  299.   As the File-Requester is only able to show 6 names at onces, you can scroll
  300.   the list up and down by clicking on the arrow-gadgets or by dragging the
  301.   proportional-gadget up and down.
  302.   To leave the File-Requester you can use the 2 gadgets at the bottom of the
  303.   window. The right gadget ('CANCEL'-gadget) breaks the function of.
  304.   The left gadget continues the function. The text shown in the left gadget
  305.   changes according to the function, that started the File-Requester.
  306.  
  307.  
  308. The Preferences-window:
  309. -----------------------
  310.   This window appears when you click on the Prefs-gadgets or select Prefs
  311.   from the Spezial-menu. This window has a similar function as the
  312.   preferences-window of the workbench. It has the function to define the
  313.   parameters for the printing of your labels.
  314.  
  315.  The Preferences-gadgets:
  316.  ------------------------
  317.   (from the left top of the window to the right bottom)
  318.  
  319.   -Columns-gadget: With this gadget you can define the number of columns
  320.     used for printing the entries. The number has to be between 1 and 6.
  321.  
  322.   -'Left / Right Margin'-gadget: With this two gadgets you can define the
  323.     left/right margin of your printing area. But when changing the numbers
  324.     you must consider that each printing column is 19 characters wide.
  325.     Be careful and don't make the distance to small. LabelPrint is able to
  326.     set the right margin automatically. (See below)
  327.  
  328.   -'LINE FEED'-gadget: ...defines the number of free lines before starting
  329.     the print. (This functions is very useful when you are printing labels
  330.     for 3.5"-disks.)
  331.  
  332.   -'Lines to print'-gadget: ...defines the minimum of lines to print.
  333.     The 'LINE FEED'-lines and the line for the disk name are not counted.
  334.     (This function is of importance, when you use continuous labels to
  335.     make sure that the printer stops printing at the beginning of the next
  336.     label)
  337.  
  338.   -PrintStyle-gadgets: ...define the way in that directories and files are
  339.     printed. You can choose between 4 possibilities:
  340.     Normal:  no spezial printing effects
  341.     Italic:  print italic
  342.     Bold:    print bold
  343.     Ita+Bo:  print italic and bold
  344.  
  345.   -'Form Feed'-gadget: When this function is activated, LabelPrint makes
  346.     after each printing a form feed. This function is very usefull when
  347.     you are using a cut sheet feeder to make sure that each printing starts  
  348.     with a new label. When this function is activated, LabelPrint neglects
  349.     the 'Lines to print'-function.
  350.  
  351.   -'Char Set'-gadget: ...defines the international char set used by the
  352.     printer for printing Labels:
  353.     Possible char sets are:
  354.       -German
  355.       -UK
  356.       -Danish I
  357.       -Swedish
  358.       -Italian
  359.       -Spanish
  360.       -Japanese
  361.       -Norwegian
  362.       -Danish II
  363.       -US
  364.       -French
  365.  
  366.   -'Defines Name'-gadget: ...contains the name of the file used for saving
  367.     your own defined parameters. (see below)
  368.  
  369.   -Quality-gadget: ...defines the printing quality. You can choose between
  370.     Draft and Letter quality.
  371.  
  372.   -Spacing-gadget: ...defines the line spacing. You can choose between
  373.     6 or 8 LPI in Standart-mode (see below) or from 5 to 15 LPI in the
  374.     'Epson LQ-850'-mode.
  375.  
  376.   -Pitch-gadget: ...defines the size of the characters.
  377.     There are 3 sizes you can choose:
  378.     10-Pica:  In this size 10 characters were printed per inch.
  379.     12-Elite: In this size 12 characters were printed per inch.
  380.     15-Fine:  In this size 15 characters were printed per inch.
  381.               (only in the 'Epson LQ-850'-mode)
  382.  
  383.   -Doublestrike-gadget: When this function is active, each line is printed
  384.     twice. This makes it look better, but it slows down the printer.
  385.  
  386.   -Condensed-gadget: ...activates or deactivates the condensed print mode.
  387.     When this mode is activated each character is printed about 40% smaller
  388.     than normal.
  389.  
  390.   -Script-gadget: With this gadget you can define the position of the text.
  391.     The selected way of printing is not used for the title-line.
  392.     You can choose between these ways:
  393.        -Normal: normal position
  394.        -Super: the characters are printed a 1/3 smaller and in superscript
  395.        -Sub: the characters are printed a 1/3 smaller and in subscript
  396.     This function is very usefull, when you want to print extrem small text.
  397.  
  398.   -Defines-gadgets: With this gadgets you can activate predefined parameters
  399.     for 3.5"- or 5.25"disks. At the beginning the defines for 3.5"-disks are
  400.     active. The 3.5"-disk parameters are for normal continuous labels (7x7cm).
  401.     The 5.25"-disk parameters are not for the normal 5.25"-disk labels,
  402.     because I think they are to small for printing all contents of a disk on
  403.     them. So I decided to use greater labels, that use the whole breadth of
  404.     the disks. But I couldn't buy them as continuous labels so use a cut
  405.     sheet feeder for printing on them.
  406.  
  407.   -OK-gadget: With this gadget you can close the Preferences-window, at which
  408.     LabelPrint uses the new defined parameters for printing.
  409.  
  410.   -Cancel-gadget: With this gadget you can close the Preferences-window, at
  411.     which LabelPrint neglects the new defined parameters and still uses the
  412.     old ones.
  413.  
  414.  The Preferences-menus:
  415.  ----------------------
  416.  
  417.   Defines:
  418.   --------
  419.    -Save: ...saves your parameters determined by the 'Set'-function using
  420.           the name shown in the 'Define Name'-gadget as file name.
  421.  
  422.    -Load: With function you can load your saved parameters. As file name
  423.           LabelPrint uses the name shown in the 'Defines Name'-gadget.
  424.           (You can't use Defines of earlier versions of LabelPrint because
  425.            version 2.5 saves and loads them in a different way.)
  426.  
  427.    -Use: ...allows you to activate one out of four defines by selecting it.
  428.  
  429.    -Set: ...allows you to set four defines, that you can recall afterwards
  430.          by using the Use-item.
  431.          To set a define you only have to select one of the four defines. It
  432.          automatical will save all parameters in the Preferences-window to its
  433.          buffer. (The old define of this number will be lost.)
  434.  
  435.   Title-Style: With this menu you can define how the disk name should be
  436.   ------------ printed.
  437.  
  438.    -Underlined: When this function is active, the disk name is printed
  439.                 underlined.
  440.  
  441.    -Normal: ...deactivates the three following functions (Italic, Bold,
  442.             Enlarged). It has no effect on the Underlined-function.
  443.  
  444.    -Italic: When this function is active, the disk name is printed italic.
  445.  
  446.    -Bold: When this function is active, the disk name is printed bold.
  447.  
  448.    -Enlarged: When this function is active, the disk name is printed enlarged.
  449.  
  450.    -'Double Height': When this function is active, the disk name is printed
  451.                      double as heigh as normal.
  452.                      (Only in the 'Epson LQ-850'-mode)
  453.  
  454.   Other:
  455.   ------
  456.    -'Set right margin': When this function is active, the right margin is
  457.        set automatically.
  458.        This function should only be turned of, when realy required, because
  459.        a wrong set right margin can have fatal effects.
  460.        
  461.    -'Test title size': When this function is active, LabelPrint automatically
  462.        tests the size of the titleline and commentlines according to the way
  463.        of printing (Enlarged on or off ?).
  464.        This function makes sure that each line is printed on the label and
  465.        not on the platen of your printer.
  466.        
  467.    -Printer: With this function you can choose the printer you use.
  468.        At the time there are only two possibilities:
  469.          -Standart: only commands of the printer device
  470.          -Epson LQ-850: some spezial commands of this printer are use
  471.                         additionally
  472.        If you own a printer, that is not compatible to the Epson LQ-850,
  473.        then write me a letter with following information:
  474.  
  475.            1. Command for Micro-Print (15 CPI: Fine):
  476.                 (Epson LQ-850: ESC g or $1B $67)
  477.            2. Command for n/60" (or n/180") line spacing:
  478.                 (Epson LQ-850: ESC A n or $1B $41 n)
  479.            3. Command for double high characters:
  480.               -on:  (Epson LQ-850: ESC w 1 or $1B $77 $01)
  481.               -off: (Epson LQ-850: ESC w 0 or $1B $77 $00)
  482.            (Best would be you send me a complete list of all commands
  483.             of your printer, because I don't know now which further
  484.             functions LabelPrint in future may have.)
  485.  
  486.        If you send me a list, I'll put your printer to the printer-list,
  487.        so that new version of LabelPrint also use your printer as good as
  488.        possible.
  489.  
  490.  
  491. The Comment-window:
  492. -------------------
  493.   This window opens,when you select the menuitem 'Comment' from the Output-
  494.   menu. The Comment-function allows you to write up to 10 lines of comment
  495.   for your labels.
  496.  
  497.   Comment-gadgets: The Comment-gadgets are the 10 long gadgets, that are
  498.     placed in 2 blocks of 5 gadgets.
  499.     In this gadgets you can type in the Comment for your labels.
  500.     (Attention: Empty lines (with no characters in it) will be automatically
  501.      removed before printing a label, so if you want to have a free line
  502.      you have to type in at least one space ' '.)
  503.      
  504.   Style-gadgets: The Style-gadgets are the 3 gadgets placed behind each
  505.     Comment-gadget. They allow you to define the printing style for the
  506.     Comment-gadget, that to it belongs. You activate / deactivate them by
  507.     clicking on the gadget. The gadgets are:
  508.       1. gadget (Bol): bold
  509.       2. gadget (Ita): italic
  510.       3. gadget (Enl): enlarged
  511.          If the function 'Test title size' is activ, LabelPrint tests the
  512.          size of text in the Comment-gaget. If the text is to long, it'll
  513.          be simply cut off.
  514.  
  515.   Reset-gadgets: ...are place above the 2 blocks of Style-gadgets.
  516.     They turn of all Style-gadgets of the block below, so that the text in
  517.     this block is printed normal.
  518.  
  519.   Pos-gadgets: ...are placed in front of the 2 Comment-blocks.
  520.     They define the position of your comment on the label, at which you can
  521.     choose between 2 posaitions.
  522.       - (B)egin: The Comment-block is printed after the title-line, but
  523.                  before the entries.
  524.       - (E)nd: The Comment-block is printed at the end of the labels.
  525.                (after the entries)
  526.     You can change the status of the gadget by clicking on it.
  527.     If both blocks have the same status, the first block will be printed
  528.     at first.
  529.  
  530.   'Kill Comment'-gadget: ...activates the Kill-mode, which allows you to kill
  531.     a commentline by clicking one on of the to it belonging Style-gadget.
  532.     The killed commentline will be removed from the list.
  533.     (Deactivate this mode after use !)
  534.  
  535.   Insert-gadget: .activates the Insert-gadget, which allows you to insert a
  536.     commentline before another by clicking on the to it belonging Style-
  537.     gadget. The Style-gadgets on the new commentline will be automatically
  538.     turned off. (Deactivate this mode after use !)
  539.     The Insert- and the Kill-mode exclude each other, so that when you
  540.     activate one the other is automtical deactivated.
  541.  
  542.   Exchange-gadget: ...exchanges the contents of the 2 Comment- and Style-
  543.     blocks. The Pos-gadgets stay the same.
  544.     (This function is of great value, when both blocks have the same status.)
  545.  
  546.   Remove-gadget: ...removes all empty lines from the comment. It is a test,
  547.     whether all empty lines are really empty, that should be removed.
  548.  
  549.   CANCEL-gadget: With this gadget you can leave the Comment-window, at which
  550.     all commentlines are cleared, so that at the printing no Comment
  551.     appears.
  552.  
  553.   OK-gadget: With this gadget you can leave the Comment-window, at which the
  554.     Comment is use by the main-program, so that the Comment appears at the
  555.     printing.

  558.  
  559. I hope LabelPrint will help you to print your labels faster and better,
