  7.         Hello everyone and welcome to this issue of PD Chat! Those of you 
  8. who were at the last general meeting know that the Annual General Meeting 
  9. was also held and that the committee re-elected.
  10.  
  11.         I was elected to the newly created position of Public Domain/
  12. Shareware Acquisitions. Cathy Tuck was voted in as Public Domain/Shareware 
  13. Sales. This sharing of the job will allow both of us to spend more time 
  14. doing our jobs and result in a better service.
  15.  
  16.         The position of PD Acquisitions has grown somewhat - I now have the 
  17. entire library on hard drive and will be releasing new disks which will be 
  18. passed onto Cathy for sale.
  19.  
  20.         At the last committee meeting (held on Friday 23rd August) I 
  21. proposed some new ideas for the library and the committee agreed on the 
  22. following ideas...
  23.  
  24.     1) Archiving of the current library to free up more hard drive space. It
  25. is hoped that we can save 50% of space by using the latest version of LHarc
  26.  
  27.     2) A monthly report on the previous months sales (in terms of what disks 
  28. and how many) to be presented at each committee meeting. This will help 
  29. monitor what disks are being sold, so I can concentrate on ordering similar 
  30. software, to meet the demand.
  31.  
  32.     3) The possibility of using the program UFO (Universal File Organiser) 
  33. as an "online catalog".
  34.  
  35.     4) The complete overhaul of the library - removing older versions and 
  36. making entirely new disks - these will contain approx 700K each.
  37.  
  38.     5) In the process of overhauling the library, a new set of categories 
  39. will be introduced, these will be....

  42.     * General Utilities            * Pictures (including clipart)
  43.     * Graphic Utilities            * Fonts  
  44.     * Communications               * Demo's (at half price)

  50. The half price demos disks will contain commercial product demos and the 
  51. reduced price is a reflection of the fact that you are not getting a 
  52. complete program. However at half price, it is hoped that this will 
  53. stimulate your curiousity and so become more aware of what products are 
  54. out there for the ST.
  55.  
  56.     6) The introduction of subscribing to the Disk of the Month - with a 
  57. new pricing system to suit. The committee agreed on:
  58.  
  59.              $3.00 each at meetings
  60.              $3.00 + postage if ordered separately
  61.             $30.00 subscription for 12 disks - this offer is open to 
  62.                    non-members too.
  63.  
  64.         This will be a particular advantage to country members who cannot 
  65. attend meetings, by subscribing they will now get a disk of the latest PD 
  66. software each month. (Thanks to Jeff of Tamworth for the suggestion!)

  69.         Of particular interest is the use of UFO as an online catalog. In 
  70. this edition of Inside Info, I have included a copy of UFO and what is now 
  71. the newly released "MUSIC" series of disks. On disks MUSIC.001 to MUSIC.018 
  72. are samples, modules and trackers all related to the NoiseTracker concept. 
  73. (More on this in a moment...)

  75.         If you run UFO.PRG you will be presented will a large dialog box 
  76. with various buttons. Click on the LOAD button and then click on the 
  77. Execute button, a file selector will appear - load in MUSIC.UFO. Please be 
  78. patient, the loading takes a long, long time because UFO is sorting the 
  79. data contained in the file.

  81.         Eventually the large Dialog box reappears and in the largest button 
  82. will be details of the Database called "Music". Click inside this box and 
  83. it turns black like any other button - then click on execute and the 
  84. display will change.

  86. Below is an approximation of what you will see in a GEM window with scroll 
  87. bars.....

  110.         The comment line in the above illustration is on a new line, but 
  111. in UFO scrolling to the right will reveal the comment...
  112.  
  113.         As you can see this is the begining of the list of files on disk 
  114. MUSIC.001.
  115.  
  116.         The labled parts of the list are....
  117.  
  118.         Folder Name: Contains the name of the disk and the folder, in this 
  119.                      case the folder is \DIGICOMP\ and is on disk MUSIC.001
  120.  
  121.         Rez:         The resolution in which the program runs is given as 
  122.                      Low, Medium, High. A dash "-" means it doesn't work in
  123.                      that  particular resolution and if there are three 
  124.                      dashes "---" then resolution doesn't effect this file 
  125.                      (data/text files etc)
  126.  
  127.        Categories:   UFO supports 2 categories fields, in this particular 
  128.                      database I have used "Tracker", "Sample", "Module",
  129.                      and  "STE only". Using the two category fields I am 
  130.                      able to specify a "Tracker" that is "STE only" etc etc.
  131.                      Using UFO  you can search for combinations for example
  132.                      which  programs are "STE only", a similar thing can be
  133.                      done by resolution. 
  134.  
  135.        Comments:     This line of text appears on the extreme right of the 
  136.                      file entry, and is read by scrolling right with the 
  137.                      scroll bars. Here I have written brief descriptions 
  138.                      of the programs...
  139.  
  140.         So for example, DIGICOMP.PRG is a Tracker, works only in Low 
  141. resolution, MODPLAY!.TTP is a program that runs in all resolutions and is 
  142. STE only.

  145.         To quit the program, close the GEM window by using the standard 
  146. close window gadget in the top left corner of the window, this brings you 
  147. back to the main dialog box, and from here click on "Quit".
  148.  
  149.         If this program is to be used, updates of the catagues will be 
  150. sent as UFO files and "Merged" into the existing files using the merge 
  151. function of UFO.

  154. like to know if I'm doing the right thing.

  157.                              NEW PD TITLES

  160.         This month there won't be too many new releases because I've been 
  161. trying to find my way around the 4 cartridges. There will be a Disk of The 
  162. Month at the next meeting, at the reduced price of $3.00 - More copies of 
  163. it will be made so hopefully it will be attractive enough to get everyone 
  164. who comes to the meeting to buy a copy.
  165.  
  166.         In terms of new material, I am about to start releasing material 
  167. that came over on the 44 Meg cartridge I sent to Europe and more recently 
  168. the 51 disks that arrived from Germany last week.
  169.  
  170.         This month I am releasing disks MUSIC.001 to MUSIC.018. These are 
  171. all to deal with the NoiseTracker concept, in which sound samples are 
  172. sequenced by a program called a Tracker into entire tunes, called modules.
  173.  
  174.         MUSIC.001 contains various trackers and module players for the ST 
  175. and STE along with some samples and my favourite module to play.
  176.         MUSIC.002 to MUSIC.013 contain modules
  177.         MUSIC.014 to MUSIC.018 contain sample
  178.
