A dictionary of modern computer terms
for the Atari computer enthusiast

THIS FILE OUTLINES THE CONDITIONS OF THE CONTRACT
YOU ARE NOW ENTERING INTO.
YOU MUST READ THIS FILE!
"THE ATARI A TO Z" IS SHAREWARE AND COPYRIGHT PROTECTED
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
For those of you still confused about shareware or who choose to ignore the
distinction, SHAREWARE means that this is a commercial package that you have
to pay for.
It is *not* in the public domain.
It is *not* free of copyright.
It is *not* free of charge.
It gives you the chance to 'try before you buy' but if you keep it you have to
pay for it. Otherwise you are committing theft. If you don't like or agree
with any of these terms then you are under obligation to delete all these
files just as you would put the book back on the shelf in a shop.
"The Atari A to Z" consists of ASCII text files of the book published by
Linnhe Computing from 1995 to 1997. These files are protected under UK and
International copyright law, and are NOT in the public domain. Mark S Baines
owns the copyright to these files, the contents therein and this document
file.
The right of Mark S Baines to be identified as the author of this book has
been asserted by him in accordance with the Copyright, Designs and Patents
Act, 1988. All rights reserved worldwide.
All the normal and usual restrictions placed on books applies to these files.
However, you may store them on your computer and you may give a copy of the
complete archive file to someone else providing that they understand that it
is shareware and they have to pay the fee as well.
You may print off some or all of the files, but ONLY for your own use and NOT
for gain or profit. You may NOT give or sell any or all of this printed
material to any one else under any circumstances.
You may convert any or all of the files to other formats but you may NOT give
or sell these files to any one else under any circumstances.
You may NOT translate the material contained in these files into another
language without obtaining permission from Mark S Baines in writing
beforehand.
In other words, the fact that the information contained in these files is
presented as computer text files and not printed on paper doesn't exempt them
from these copyright restrictions. I have not given up my rights to this
material!
You may retain a backup copy of the archive file ATOZBOOK.ZIP as well as a
single set of uncompressed 'working' copies.
"THE ATARI A TO Z" - YOUR SHAREWARE LICENCE AND FEE
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
You are hereby granted a limited licence upon payment of the shareware fee to
read and use the information contained in these files for your own personal
use only as outlined above and not for any gain or profit for you or for any
one else. This licence covers one complete set of uncompressed 'working' files
and a compressed backup archive file ATOZBOOK.ZIP. Additional sets must each
be paid for.
*****************************************************************************
* If you refer to any part, however small, of any file other than this *
* documentation file MORE THAN ONCE then you are legally obliged to pay me *
* the small sum of at least £5.00 (five UK pounds). This is a minimum *
* payment. If you feel that this book is worth more, then please send it. *
*****************************************************************************
Payment in UK POUNDS STERLING only can be made by:
Cash (UK Pounds Sterling and at your own risk!)
Cheques (drawn on banks with a UK address only)
Postal Orders
Eurocheques
American Express Money Orders
International Bank Drafts
International Money Orders
International Post Office Cheques
UK POUNDS STERLING ONLY! Anything else will be ignored, don't send it! If it
is likely that my bank will charge me to convert your payment then please
don't send it. Any charges incurred must be paid by you before sending payment
to me.
American Express money orders seem the cheapest to obtain in the US or simply
place UK Pound Sterling bank notes between sheets of paper to conceal them in
an envelope. This has always worked in the past but is at your own risk. In
the EU, Eurocheques appear to be the simplest option.
Make your payment to "Mark S Baines" and state clearly:
1 Your name
2 Your address including e-mail address if available
3 Where you obtained the book

"THE ATARI A TO Z" AND MAGAZINE EDITORS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
No magazine, whether commercial or free, professional or amateur, may place
"The Atari A to Z" on a disk magazine or magazine cover disk without the
express written permission of Mark S Baines at the above address or via e-
mail. Mark S Baines reserves the right to demand the appropriate remuneration
from commercial magazines and disk magazine publishers for permission to
publish "The Atari A to Z" on their disks. If someone makes a profit out of
selling a magazine with a cover disk, then it is only right that some of that
profit should be distributed to the authors of the software contained therein,
just as the writers that supply the articles are paid.
"THE ATARI A TO Z" AND WRITERS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Obviously writers of magazine article, books and program documentation may
refer to and use information from this book. That is, after all, what the book
is for.
However, you may only quote passages from this book material as long as the
source is always acknowledged prominently for each and every part quoted
whether verbatim or paraphrased. No one is expected to know everything and
when someone has done the hard work for you it is only common decency to
acknowledge your sources.
No greater than 25% of the total word count of any single magazine article may
be material from this book.
No greater than 10% of the total word count of any book or magazine may be
material from this book.
No greater than 25% of the total word count of the total program documentation
for any software may be material from this book.
Please consult me in writing or e-mail if there is a need to quote or
paraphrase material greater than this amount, such as large tables.
"THE ATARI A TO Z" AND SOFTWARE COMPANIES
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
No software or hardware company or distributor is allowed to include "The
Atari A to Z" with any of their software without the express written
permission of Mark S Baines at the above address. I am very receptive to such
an idea but you must contact me first. Material from this book may be used in
documentation up to a limit of 25% of the total program documentation and the
source must be acknowledged prominently.
"THE ATARI A TO Z" - INVENTORY
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
When distributed through any means whatsoever, this total package of 38 files
must not be separated or altered in any way. No other files may be included or
existing ones extracted.
The complete set of uncompressed files WILL NOT fit onto a normal 720K floppy
disk. Nor will they fit onto a 1.44Mb HD floppy disk that also contains the
ATOZBOOK.ZIP file. All the files listed below occupy over 940K of disk space.
Floppy disk only users should use a program such as STZIP to uncompress the
archive file ATOZBOOK.ZIP and select which few files they have space for to go
onto the disk. Then copy these onto another empty floppy disk, delete them
from the archive file disk and select and uncompress the rest. Using a double
floppy disk system or a RAM disk may help here. But really, do yourself a
favour and get a hard disk!

"THE ATARI A TO Z" - COMMENTS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The book files are direct ASCII conversions of the Protext files used for the
fifth printing. Some typographical changes have been made to keep within the
bounds of the Atari character set. Tabs were replaced with spaces. A carriage
return and line feed terminates each line.
There have been some minor textual changes and some updates and revisions,
especially in the Appendices. Thanks go especially to Harry Sideras for
sorting out which serial ports described in the book are those marked on the
cases for the Mega STE, TT and Falcon.
On the whole, however, the book remains as it did in 1995 and is a little out-
of-date in a few areas. But there are 2,239 entries, 101 tables and 128,000
words here - the vast majority of which is still pertinent and waiting to be
picked through as and when you want.
I hope you find the information in the book useful but PLEASE don't forget to
register. This book took me half a year of hard work to write for YOU to
enjoy. I'm not asking you to pay very much and where else are you going to get
this huge amount of Atari information for a five pounds? Certainly not on any
bookshelf! Remember that when you browse through the files and also the next
time you complain that there isn't much new Atari material available these
days. It is refusal to pay shareware fees that partly accounts for this.
