  24.      comes with even less warenty.  This is a BETA version.  It works
  25.      on my machine.

  27. DESCRIPTION
  28.  
  29.      Emacs is a very powerful, but sometimes cryptic, text editor. Its
  30.      basic features are similar to those of the MEmacs editor which
  31.      comes with AmigaOS (in the Tools directory), but has numerous
  32.      other facilities:
  33.  
  34.      - unlimited undo.
  35.      - language specific editing, with automatic (re)indentation.
  36.      - a dialect of lisp as extension language, leading to extreme 
  37.        reconfigurability.
  38.      - abbreviations for commonly typed words.
  39.      - complete on-line manual.
  40.      - powerful search & replace facilities (including wildcards).
  41.      - direct mail and news reading ability
  42.      - everything you could every desire in an editor and some of what
  43.        you'd like in a good OS

  45. NEW FEATURES

  47.      Since the previous release (1.26), the major change has been to
  48.      move to emacs-19.25.  Emacs-19 has many new features and
  49.      optimizations.  Many of the new lisp packages require Emacs-19.

  51. OLD FEATURES

  53.      - menus, mouse, clipboard, rexx and workbench support.
  54.      - public screen support
  55.      - For the most part, it's working "good enough" --- I'm using for most
  56.        everything.  I havn't, however, deleted 18 from my disk yet ;).

  58. MISSING EMACS-19 FEATURES
  59.  
  60.      - multiple "frames" (what emacs calls windows) support.
  61.      - fonts/faces (emacs does support choice of *one* font)
  62.      - mouse support isn't completely Emacs-19 compliant.

  64. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  65.  
  66.      - AmigaOS 2.04
  67.      - At least 2MB of memory (emacs uses about 750k + memory for the
  68.        files being edited).
  69.      - 3.5MB of free disk space for the binary version, 11.3MB for the 
  70.        source version (but you can remove some of the files once it
  71.        has been installed).  If you want to build it, don't even
  72.        ask...
  73.      - Emacs works with a 68000 (A500,A2000), but is a bit slow. It is
  74.        very pleasant to use with a 68030/25MHz ...

  76. KNOWN BUGS
  77.  
  78.      - exec-path just doesn't seem to work right.  Some things that
  79.        call external programs won't find them.  Sometimes there is a
  80.        way around as in vc-path for vc.  However, anything you put in
  81.        gnuemacs:etc (an extra assign to gnuemacs-19.25) will be found
  82.        as will anything in s: I honestly havn't figured this one out
  83.        yet.
  84.      - "vm" creates buffers with *huge* filenames.  The format is uses
  85.        to generate a buffer name from a "forwarded" buffer puts in a
  86.        colon.  This causes a lockup.  This may be true for other
  87.        buffer names with a colon.
  88.      - I havn't tested menus yet.  I am told someone has munged the
  89.        menus to work just like other v19 menus.  Someone should verify
  90.        this.
  91.      - clipboard interaction doesn't work exactly as expected.  If you
  92.        cut from some other app, then use kill-region, then use yank
  93.        followed by yank-pop, you don't get what you cut.
  94.      - Some issues with env-vars remain.  Emacs keeps internal copy
  95.        which may not be appropriate on the Amiga.  I havn't decided
  96.        how to hack this up yet.
  97.      - It seem inexplicably slightly slower in screen movement from
  98.        the 18 port.  May be due to creaping featureism.
