(c) Button Software 1994
Version: 1.0
Release date: 94/03/31 (South African BBS's)
94/08/29 (selected BBS's via Internet)
Machine requirements: 16MHZ 286 or faster, 512K RAM, VGA.
DESCRIPTION:
BAT 'n BALL is a game that tests your reflexes as you attempt to guard a
castle of sorts from a drug-crazed bouncing ball.
You have at your disposal a crude but effective bat and (I assume) nerves
of steel.
Your castle is surrounded by a brick wall that crumbles whenever it gets hit by
the malevolent ball.
Defend it valiantly, for a hit to its core will lose you a life (bat).
Stick around until your opponents lose their castles and you will progress to
a new screen.
Be careful - you have only three lives with which to brave the 20 screens and
the last screen hides a nasty surprise!
FEATURES:
The game sports at least a dozen or so different playing areas.
Ominous beeps should emit from your computer's built-in speaker.
The game can be paused and the sound disabled during play.
Two players can play simultaneously.
Opponents get meaner, the ball faster and the playing area more difficult as
you progress through levels.
You can start play at a higher level if the first screens become a drag.
The game runs at similar speeds on all motherboards, unless you use the turbo
switch during play.
HOW TO PLAY:
The idea is to finish all of the screens. Sounds too easy?
Defend your castle (pile of blocks) with your bat.
If the ball smashes through its outer layer (wall) and hit the centre, you
lose a life.
Bump the ball with the end of the bat to deflect it towards the corner of an
enemy's castle. This makes it more difficult for him to reach it in time.
If one player loses a life during a two player game, the other continues alone
untill the screen is finished or he/she loses too. If both lose they start
again on the same screen.
Try to eliminate your opponents quickly, for the ball soon turns an angry red
and tries to set a new speed record.
In the two player game the players must avoid trapping the ball between their
castles by blocking it only when necessary.
TIPS:
I did my best to ensure that the game will run at the same speed on all
platforms, but you can cheat by toggling your turbo button while playing the
game. (not on the menu though)
Try using the two player mode on your own by assigning the same keys to both
players (swap the left and right key for player 2).
THE GROVELLING PART:
This is my first product as a shareware author and also my first game written
for the PC.
Please contribute a meager R30.00 ($12 US) to enable me to continue with my
efforts.
I promise to put the money to good use - buying a book on the Soundblaster!
I depend on your support to enable me to become a full time games designer.
I am currently working on a game entitled 'ABMIS the Lion'.
It features puzzle solving combined with arcade action and should be finished
at around the end of the year.
SAY YOUR BIT:
I compiled a list of questions to give my efforts more direction and to help
me deciding what type of games to design in future.
Please send your pearls of wisdom on its own or include it with the registration
fee (see REGISTER.DOC file).
