- Using Help -
From the setup screen or game board click the mouse on the HELP button.
Use the Arrow Down, Page Down and End keys to advance. Use the Arrow Up,
Page Up and Home keys to back up. Press Esc to return to the main program.
- Introduction -
DEAD END is a game for 1 thru 6 players. The game is played by choosing
a path thru the streets and avenues of the board and marking each turn of
the path with an arrow. The object of the game is to be the last player
on the board to reach a DEAD END.
- Starting -
After a short introduction, click on "continue" with the mouse or press
enter and you will be presented with a setup screen. At the bottom of the
screen is an instruction line. Click on the function buttons with the mouse
or use the arrow keys to highlight the buttons on the screen and press
enter to activate the function.
Each player chooses a color for their arrows by typing thier name in the
blank input field. When all players are input click on start with the
mouse or arrow to highlight the start button and press enter. The player
with the set of arrows matching the color on top of the wheel starts.
Play continues in turn as prompted at the top of the screen. Each player
in turn positions their next arrow upon any open space on the board
(except as noted in rule # 4).
- Rules -
1. To move, a player uses the arrow key or the mouse to select an open
arrow space that lies in the direction of their flashng arrow. (The
computer will beep and reset if an illegal move is attempted.) The
flashing arrow will be advanced to the selected location and a solid
arrow will appear on the space that player is moving from.
2. The player moving may turn to the left, right, or go forward at each
intersection. A player may not jump over any arrow pointing in the same
direction. An arrow pointing in the opposite direction may be ignored.
3. A player may not advance after turning. Only one arrow may be placed
per move. No U turns are allowed. A player may continue in the direction
of the flashing arrow any number of spaces until forced to turn by either
an arrow pointing in the direction of motion or the edge of the game area.
4. Any intersection on the board may be used for starting, except an
intersection one block directly in front of another players starting arrow.
5. No arrow may be placed on top of any other arrow. All arrows placed
remain on the board until the end of the game.
6. When a player may not legally place an arrow on the board, that player
is at a "DEAD END" and is out of the game. The last player to legally
place an arrow on the board wins.
- Play Level -
This button sets the computer "thought level" it may be set from 1 to 9.
The number of the level is essentialy the number of moves that the computer
looks ahead.
- Human Time Limit -
This allows a limit to be placed on the amount of time a Human player is
allowed to think. A time limit of 0 means no time limit. If the time
expires the computer will make a move for the player. These kinds of moves
are made at level 1 so you better make up your mind fast!
- Play Mode -
Two playing modes are available, Match Play and Arcade. In Match Play
you play against a friend, or the computer, or both. Arcade play lets
you go one on one against the computer through a set of increasingly harder
game setups. You start with three "lives" and you get a bonus life every
fifth level. You must win on a level to advance to the next level.
- Save / Recall Game -
These buttons allow you to svae a game if you are interrupted. Only one
game may be saved at a time. Simply click on this button with the mouse
or press enter when the button is highlited. Pressing the Recall game
button will bring you into the last game that was saved.
- Demo Game -
Press this button to watch the computer play itself. (Great for parties!)
- Board Size -
The game board is divided into colored groups of blocks to allow for play
on a variety of game areas. This allows the game to be played in a short
or long version. The smallest board is when play is restricted to the
streets and avenues surrounding the red blocks (board size 3). The play
area may be expanded to include one or more color groups of blocks until
the entire board is used (board size 8). It is recommended that the board
size be equal to the number of players plus 1.
- Solitaire -
Dead End may be played as a Solitaire game. The object is to fill the
entire game area with a single path of arrows so that no space remains
empty. Sound easy? It's not!
