NASCAR Racing League (NRL) Series
Officially Sanctioned By Papyrus Design Group, Inc.
V1.1 -- Updated December 12, 1994
O F F I C I A L R U L E S
---------------------------
THE CONCEPT
-----------
To, as closely as possible, simulate a partial NASCAR racing season, with the
tracks currently available.
THE NRL STAFF
-------------
Jim DeFord : Director
Rick Mahoney: Verification Analyst
Dick Smith : Technical Inspection
Jeff Vincent: Advisor
Paul Ring : Advisor
ELIGIBILITY
-----------
To be eligible to race in the NRL, you must complete the NRL_APP.TXT file that
can be found on Papyrus' BBS, in the NASCAR Racing files area. After filling
out your NRL Application, please send this information to Jim DeFord in one of
the following ways:
PAPYRUS BBS: Private message
Live Wire BBS: Private Message
FAX: 206-256-0717
Your application must be received no later than January 25, 1995 to be eligible
to participate in the first race.
Once the season begins, anyone can enter the series by sending in an application
along with their race results. In ALL circumstances, an application MUST be sent
before your race results will be considered valid.
THE SEASON
----------
The NRL Series will consist of 9 races with 1 race at each track currently
available with Papyrus' NASCAR Racing. The NRL Series will be run using the
SINGLE RACE MODE.
Two test races will be held on December 25, 1994 and January 1, 1995.
Track location, weather information and opponent strength will be provided by
Papyrus. Only the race dates are public information.
RACE DATE
--------------------------------------
1. Feb. 5
2. Feb. 12
3. Feb. 19
4. Feb. 26
5. Mar. 5
6. Mar. 12
7. Mar. 19
8. Mar. 26
9. Apr. 2
--------------------------------------
Race information will be provided no later than 5:00PM Eastern Time, the
Wednesday before the race, e.g.;
For Race #1, on February 5th, the weather and track location will be available
on Papyrus' BBS, no later than Wednesday, February 1, at 5:00PM.
THE RULES
---------
Car setups will be the responsibility of each individual driver. Sharing of
race setups between drivers is legal and encouraged. Teams can be created for
the sake of realism, but there will be no team points awarded. Teams are also
encouraged, for nothing else than to make the series a bit more fun.
"DRIVERS2.TXT" FILE
-------------------
An Official NRL DRIVERS2.TXT file will be available on the BBS. There will not
be a standard NRL.DAT file for the series. You can acquire a CARSxx.DAT file
or create your own. Then you can use the "SWAP CARS" option to change the order
of the cars so they match the names in the DRIVERS2.TXT file. For those of you
who have not acquired or created a CARSxx.DAT file of your own, you can
download the complete race package from Live Wire BBS @ 503-646-3651. Feel free
to replace the #94 car with your personal car in both the DRIVERS2.TXT and
NRL.DAT files. Due to licensing constraints, the NRL race package on Papyrus'
BBS will NOT contain the NRL.DAT (Cars) file.
LIMITATIONS
-----------
None. You can restart a race as many times as needed with no penalties. There
is no limit on practice time, qualifying attempts, or warm-up sessions.
Practice under REAL RACE conditions will also be allowed.
THE CARS
--------
Each driver will select a Ford, Chevrolet or Pontiac and either Hoosier or
Goodyear tires. This selection will remain for the entire season.
SWITCHING CARS/TIRES
--------------------
Absolutely forbidden! Once you have chosen a car and tire, your choice will
remain for the entire season.
REALISM
-------
The "Realism" settings will be as follows:
Race Length: 50%
Yellow Flags <May not be possible on some tracks due to glitches>
Car Damage
Weather: Provided by Papyrus
Opponents: 20
Opponent Strength: Provided by Papyrus
Pace Lap <May not be possible on some tracks due to glitches>
All participants will be free to choose whatever control settings they wish.
Auto/manual shifting, braking help or whatever suits your style. A hint here to
the newer users is that having your settings set for AUTO-SHIFTING or BRAKING
HELP, where the computer chooses when to brake and shift, is not necessarily
the fastest way around the track!
SAVING & NAMING YOUR REPLAYS
----------------------------
One (1) replay will be sent with your results; The finish of your race. The
beginning of your replay will be clipped AT LEAST two (2) seconds before the
start/finish line. The end of your replay MUST show your car in a FULL-STOP
position for at least 5 frames. If you do not know how to edit your replays,
consult your manual.
You must give your race finish replay a unique name.
FOR EXAMPLE: If Jim DeFord drives for Summit Racing, he would name his replay
using the first two initials of his team, and his own personal initials, i.e.:
His race finish replay would be named:
SRJD-R.RPY
POSTING RESULTS
---------------
Your results file will consist of four files. Your race finish replay, your
qualifying and race results files and a completed NRL_FRM.TXT file.
After qualifying, select STANDINGS and save this file. Jim DeFord would save
this text file as: SRJD_Q (NASCAR Racing will add a STN extension to this file,
naming it SRJD_Q.STN)
After your race, also select STANDINGS and again, Jim DeFord would name this
text file as: SRJD-R (NASCAR Racing will add a STN extension to this file,
naming it SRJD-R.STN)
You must also give a unique name to your Zip file, I.E., two initials of your
team name, your initials, and the first three (3) numbers of the average speed
of the race at the finish.
For Example:
Team Name: SUMMIT RACING
Driver Name: Jim DeFord
Average Speed: 199.988
Jim would name his combined, ZIPPED, Results package as:
SRJD199.ZIP
The files required to post legal results are:
*.RPY (Your race-end replay)
*-Q.STN (Your qualifying results text file)
*-R.STN (Your race results text file)
NRL_FRM.TXT (Info file required by NRL)
IMPORTANT NOTE!!!!!
-------------------
If, after bringing your car to its required stop and exiting the race, you DO
NOT see any of the race-end graphics, your race is NOT YET COMPLETE!!! You must
then RESUME your race and drive further around the track until when you exit
the race you see the race winner graphics, or your car being "pushed" by your
team in the pits!
If your race is NOT FULLY COMPLETED, your race results will show you as a DNF
and scored as such!
UPLOAD DEADLINES
----------------
Your results will be uploaded to Papyrus' BBS attached to a PRIVATE message, to
me, JIM DEFORD no later than 12 NOON, Eastern Time, on Race Day. It is the sole
responsibility of the driver to be aware of your time zone in relation to the
Eastern Time Zone! I.E., the deadline time on the West Coast would be 9:00AM on
Race Day (Sunday).
You can only upload ONE set of results. In the event that more than one set is
uploaded, the FIRST set will apply and all others will be rejected.
Any results received after the deadline will be considered a DNF, and you will
receive NO points. In consideration of BBS failures, Acts of God, and whatever
else anyone might run into, there are several options available to you to
inform the NRL Scoring Staff of a problem and/or report your results.
If you cannot upload to Papyrus' BBS, for whatever reason, you can upload your
race results to Light Wave BBS at 503-646-3651. You can also inform the NRL
Director, Jim DeFord, in one of two ways of results reporting problems:
Home phone: 206-256-4155 (Be careful to observe WEST COAST TIME!!)
or by FAX : 206-256-0717 (24 hours a day)
HINT: Excuses such as: "I forgot," or, "I don't know what time zone I'm in,"
or, "My dog ate my results," are not valid, and will NOT be accepted!
DID NOT FINISH (DNF's)
----------------------
DNF's will be eligible for submission for the NRL Series. These results will
be scored behind all the drivers who completed the full race in order of laps
completed.
DNF's will also be considered for laps led and most laps led points, if
applicable.
If you DNF, press ESCAPE shortly after the DNF (to best preserve the data at
the time of your DNF). Do NOT use the "A"ccelerated time option (it will score
you as a DNF but lose the number of laps you successfully completed).
All other rules apply for sending in your results as if you had finished the
race. Please see POSTING YOUR RESULTS.
T H E P O I N T S
-------------------
Points will be awarded as follows:
BONUS POINTS
------------
Bonus Points will be awarded based on the NASCAR Points system:
Leading a Lap: 5 (five) points for leading at least one lap
Most Laps Led: 5 (five) points for leading the most laps
NOTE: In the event of a tie for Most Laps Led, the driver with the fastest
overall race time will receive these points.
RACE POINTS
-----------
Race finish points will be awarded to each driver based on the NASCAR points
system as listed on Page 29 of your NASCAR Racing manual, except that for
positions 41 - 50, the points will be awarded as follows:
POS PTS
--- ---
41 38
42 35
43 32
44 29
45 26
46 23
47 20
48 15
49 10
50 05
Again, it does not matter what position you finish your race. The points will
be awarded to the drivers that race the fastest races as reported by your last
lap replay. You could finish your race in third place, and still win the race,
because your end race time was faster than the other NRL drivers.
*SPECIAL NOTES*
---------------
TIES
----
A tie at the end of the season will be broken by considering:
1) Most wins
2) Best top-five finishes
3) Best top-ten finishes
4) Most laps lead
5) A one-race, head-to-head modem race-off at a randomly selected track.
PROTESTS
--------
Definition: A valid NRL protest, must be submitted to the NRL Director, no
later than 24 hours after the posted results. Any protests received after the
24 hour deadline will be rejected.
In the event of a protest, the results of that race will be delayed until the
protest has been decided. Protests will be ruled on by the NRL Director, and
staff, and the decision will be final.
It is the responsibility of all participants to be aware of the NRL rules. In
the event of excessive, or mediocre protests, this could possibly fall under
Series Banishment, Article A.
SERIES BANISHMENT
-----------------
ARTICLE A: UN-SPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
If a driver, or potential driver excessively intimidates, insults, or otherwise
harrasses any NRL participant, or the NRL Series in general, they will receive
one (1) private warning. Any further acts of harrassment will result in a
Series Banishment and a public message posted on the Papyrus BBS informing the
other drivers of the Series Banishment.
ARTICLE B: VERIFIED CHEATING
If a driver is verified to have cheated in a race, i.e., edited or otherwise
"hacked" their race results or replays, said driver will be immediately
banished from the series, and a public message posted on the Papyrus BBS
informing the other drivers of the Series Banishment.
