II. EXPLANATION AND COMMENTS

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PATCH IS TO MAKE ACES OVER EUROPE MORE REALISTIC. ALL
CHANGES ARE IN ACCORDANCE WITH INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN VARIOUS
BOOKS BY SUCH NOTED AUTHORS AS WILLIAM GREEN, BILL GUNSTON, WILLIAM HESS,
AND ROGER FREEMAN, ETC. SINCE ORDNANCE LOADS ARE FREQUENTLY LISTED BY
TOTAL WEIGHT CARRIED, ALL MODIFICATIONS TO BOMB & ROCKET LOADS HAVE BEEN
CROSS REFERENCED WITH PHOTOGRAPHS. WHILE WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE AOE AS
REALISTIC AS POSSIBLE THROUGH THIS PATCH, MANY INACCURACIES STILL EXIST AND

CORRECTS THE DAMAGE FACTOR OF THE 15mm CANNON. ORIGINALLY, AOE GAVE IT A
VALUE OF 15 (DECIMAL), WHILE THE 13mm & .50 CAL HAVE VALUES OF 20 AND THE
20mm HAS A VALUE OF 100. PERHAPS THE 15mm WAS SOMEWHAT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT TO
THE JAGDFLIEGERN WHEN FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1941 ON THE ME-109F, THIS WAS CAUSED
BY IT'S COMPARISON TO THE 20mm. THE 15mm CANNON STILL HAS A GREATER PROJECTILE
WEIGHT THAN THE .50 CAL, AND ALSO HAS A SMALL EXPLOSIVE CHARGE. IT NOW HAS A
VALUE OF 40 FOR DAMAGE EFFECTS.

MUCH MORE REALISTIC TAKEOFFS AND LANDINGS.
-IN CONJUNCTION WITH *.TBL FILES, CORRECTS APPEARANCE OF U.S. AIRCRAFT
AT LONG RANGE. THE NATURAL ALUMINUM AIRCRAFT NOW LONGER DISAPPEAR AT LONG
RANGE. INSTEAD THEY WILL SHINE LIKE B-17'S AND B-24'S.

-INCREASED MOMENTUM TO ROLL AND PITCH. NO MORE FLYING IN COLD MOLASSES.
-ADJUSTED MAXIMUM SPEED AND ALTITUDES AT WHICH THEY ARE ACHIEVED.
-ADJUSTED CEILINGS.
-LOWERED COMPRESSION SPEEDS.
-ADJUSTED STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY.
-LANDING GEAR AND FLAP DAMAGE OCCURS AT LOWER SPEEDS.
-REDUCED RUDDER EFFECTIVENESS.
-INTRODUCED AILERON LOCK ON SOME AIRCRAFT.
-ACCELERATION IS REDUCED THRU LOWERED ENGINE REVVING. (THIS IS ACTUALLY
CONTROLLED IN THE *.DAT FILE, BUT IT AFFECTS PERFORMANCE)
MAXIMUM SPEEDS ARE ACHIEVED USING 100% POWER. DYNAMIX'S MODELING OF ENGINE
BURN OUT IS TOO EXTREME. GERMAN AIRCRAFT AT THIS STAGE OF THE WAR WERE
EQUIPPED WITH A MW-50 (METHANOL-WATER) BOOST SYSTEM. (ME-109'S WERE EQUIPPED
WITH EITHER MW-50 OR GM-1 NITROUS OXIDE) ENOUGH WAS CARRIED FOR
FORTY MINUTES USE, AND IT COULD BE USED FOR 10 MINUTES AT A TIME, WITH 5
MINUTES BETWEEN EACH USE. (THIS EXCLUDES THE ME-262 AND AR-234, OF COURSE)
THE P-47 ALSO HAD A SIMILAR WATER-INJECTION SYSTEM TO BOOST HORSEPOWER.
ALLIED IN-LINE ENGINES WERE NOT EQUIPPED WITH SPECIAL ADDITIVE-TYPE BOOSTERS,
BUT COULD BE RUN IN "EMERGENCY" POWER FOR SOME TIME BEFORE "BURNING OUT."
ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NO DEFINITIVE FIGURES ON HOW LONG THIS WAS, COMBAT ACCOUNTS
TALK IN TERMS OF 5-10 MINUTES INSTEAD OF THE 1-2 MINUTES IN AOE. THE BOTTOM
LINE IS THAT WE TURN OFF THE "ENGINE BURNOUT" OPTION, AND USE 100% POWER WITH
SELF-IMPOSED RESTRAINT.
MAXIMUM SPEED IS BASED ON TRUE AIRSPEED, NOT INDICATED AIRSPEED. THIS IS
NOT REALISTIC, BUT WE HAVE NO WAY OF CALCULATING INDICATED AIRSPEED AND THE
PROGRAM DOES ALLOW FOR CALCULATING IT ANYWAY. SO IT WAS NECESSARY TO CONTINUE
DOWN THE WRONG PATH DYNAMIX STARTED. ALTHOUGH DYNAMIX HAS A UTILITY WHICH
DISPLAYS ACTUAL AIRSPEED IN DIGITAL FORMAT ON A SEPERATE MONITOR, THEY MUST
HAVE DECIDED TO ALTER SOME SPEEDS FOR PLAYABILITY PURPOSES. IF ALL THE SPEEDS
ATTAINED IN THE SIM WHERE LOWER THAN THE AIRSPEED LISTED IN THE BOOKS, WE
WOULD TEND TO BELEIVE THAT IT WAS INTENDED TO SHOW THE SPEED "ACTUAL" PLANES
COULD FLY, NOT "TEST" AIRCRAFT. WELL, IT ISN'T SO. SOME PLANES ARE SLOW AND
SOME ARE WAY TOO FAST. (SEE BELOW) ALSO NOTE THAT IN SOME PLANES IT TAKES
A LONG TIME TO ACCELERATE TO TOP SPEED. AND OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO BE AT THE
CORRECT ALTITUDE. EX: THE P-47 ISN'T GOING TO MAKE 428 MPH AT 500 FEET, YOU
HAVE TO BE AT 32,000 FEET.
HERE ARE *SOME* OF THE MORE SPECIFIC PROBLEMS WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO SOLVE
WITH THESE MODIFICATIONS:
-THE P-51, P-38, P-47, SPITFIRE 14, ME-109G, FW-190D COULD NOT REACH THEIR TOP
SPEED AT THE CORRECT ALTITUDE. THEY'LL PERFORM BETTER NOW AT HIGH ALTITUDE.
-THE FW-190A COULDN'T REACH TOP SPEED.
-THE ME-262 COULD NOT MAKE RATED SPEEDS AT HIGH ALTITUDE.
-THE FW-190F WAS TOO MUCH OF A DOG. IT'S ACTUAL PERFORMANCE WAS NOT ALL THAT
DIFFERENT THE FW-190A. WHAT SLOWED IT DOWN AND MADE IT UNMANUEVERABLE WERE
ALL THE GUNS, ROCKETS, AND BOMBS SLUNG UNDERNEATH.
-THE ME-190K HAD THE HIGHEST PITCH RATE IN THE SIM: 2250 vs 1384 FOR BOTH
SPITFIRES AND THE P-51. WHILE THE ME-109K HAD A HIGH RATE OF CLIMB AND WAS
EXTREMELY FAST, IT COULDN'T TURN WITH A SPIT OR MUSTANG.
-THE TYPHOON WAS TOO MANUVERABLE.
-THE TEMPEST MODELED IN THE SIM APPEARS TO BE THE THE MARK II, WHICH WAS NOT
USED IN WW2. ONLY THE MARK V WAS USED, AND IT HAD A TOP SPEED OF 429 MPH, NOT
CLOSE TO 450 MPH AS PORTRAYED IN AOE.
-BOTH MOSQUITOS COULD REACH 410+ MPH CLEAN IN THE SIM. MAX SPEED FOR THESE
TYPES WAS ACTUALLY 380 MPH.
IN GENERAL THESE MODIFICATIONS MAKE THE USE OF VERTICAL MANUEVERS
MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. TURNING BATTLES ARE LESS DECISIVE AND THE USE OF THE
VERTICAL MAY BE NECESSARY TO BREAK THE DEADLOCK. MAKE USE OF THE PERFORMANCE EDGE
OF THE ME-109G AND K, P-47, AND SPITFIRE 14 AT HIGH ALTITUDES (26-30,000')
AND ATTEMPT TO DRAG OPPONENTS UP TO YOUR BEST ALTITUDE. WHILE YOUR MAXIMUM
SPEED MAY BE AT A LOWER ALTITUDE, YOUR SPEED ADVANTAGE AT A HIGHER ALTITUDE
MAY BE MUCH GREATER. DIFFERENCES ARE NOT AS GREAT AT LOWER ALTITUDES, BUT
IT IS WORTHWHILE TO STAY LOW IN A TYPHOON, AND THE MOSQUITOS ARE BEST AROUND
13-15,000 FEET. THE OTHER AIRCRAFT ARE BEST AROUND 18,000-24,000 FEET.
IMPORTANT NOTE: WATCH YOUR DIVE SPEED AT LOW ALTITUDE. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PULL OUT OF A HIGH SPEED DIVE AT LOW ALTITUDE. THE IMPACT
WHICH FOLLOWS FAILURE TO RECOVER WILL MAKE IDENTIFICATION OF
YOUR REMAINS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR THE GRAVES REGISTRATION
UNIT.

GENERALLY, THE BOMBERS WILL BE MORE DIFFICULT TO DESTROY. DURING THE WAR,
THE GERMANS DETERMINED THAT A B-17 REQUIRED AN AVERAGE OF 20-25 20mm HITS
TO BE BROUGHT DOWN. THE MODIFICATIONS REFLECT THIS DIFFICULTY. ADDITIONALLY,
RADIAL ENGINE FIGHTERS HAVE BEEN MADE MORE RESILIENT TO ENGINE HITS. THESE
FILES INCLUDE MODIFICATIONS WHICH RELOCATE FIRE/SMOKE ORIGINATION POINTS
ON MANY AIRCRAFT.

THE THREE *.TBL FILES INCLUDED FOR THE P-51, P-47, AND P-38 WILL MAKE THE
PLANES APPEAR NATURAL ALUMINUM AT ALL RANGES, INSTEAD OF BECOMING INCREASING
DARKER AT LONGER RANGES.
III. OPTIONAL PATCHES

UNZIP YOUR CHOICE OF THE FOLLOWING PATCH FILES INTO YOUR AOE DIRECTORY:
a. THE FOLLOWING AEFMD*.ZIP'S REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MOMENTUM IN ROLL AND PITCH.
IF YOU HAVE A SLOWER SYSTEM YOU MIGHT TRY EITHER.
-AEFMD1.ZIP LEAST AMOUNT OF MOMENTUM.
-AEFMD2.ZIP MORE MOMEMTUM, BUT LESS THAN IN REAL.ZIP
b. THE *.BXL FILES FOR EACH PLANE CONTROL THE SIZE OF THE "HIT BOXES."
DECREASING THE SIZE OF THESE BOXES MAKES THE PLANE MORE DIFFICULT TO HIT,
REQUIRING GREATER PRECISION IN YOUR AIMING TO ACHIEVE RESULTS. A SMALLER
BXL FILE ALSO MAKES *YOUR* PLANE MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE AI TO HIT.

NOTE: TO FURTHER MODIFY THE TARGET BXL SIZE, MIX YOUR "COMBAT LEVEL" WITH
THESE. A GOOD COMBINATION IS AEBXL3.ZIP *.BXL FILES WITH "STANDARD" COMBAT
LEVEL.
c. THE BULLET2.ZIP CONTAINS A MODIFIED BULLETS.MEC FILE WHICH CORRECTS THE
15mm PROBLEM, BUT INCREASES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE 13mm AND .50 CAL
BY TWO. THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO SOME WHO HAVE COMMENTED ON THE RELATIVE
INEFFECTIVENESS OF THE .50 CAL WHEN COMPARED TO GUN CAMERA FOOTAGE AND
MEMOIRS. ETC. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FILE IS COMPATIBLE WITH AOEFIX, SINCE
THE MODIFICATIONS TO THE BOMBER GUNS USES THE "UNUSED" 37MM GUN SPOT.
IF YOU ARE NOT USING AOEFIX, IT WON'T HURT EITHER SINCE NO PLANE USES
THE 37mm.
d. USDAT.ZIP CONTAINS THE AIRCRAFT *.DAT FILES FOR THE P-51, P-47, AND P-38
WITHOUT THE REVVING/SPOOLING SLOWDOWN EFFECT CONTAINED IN THE *.DAT FILES
GIVEN IN THE REAL.ZIP. THIS IS TO ENABLE YOU TO GET THE "SILVER" DOT OF
THESE PLANES WHEN THEY ARE AT LONG RANGE WITHOUT THE SPOOLING SLOWDOWN.
SO IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SPOOLING EFFECT IN REAL.ZIP, DELETE THE AIRCRAFT

IV. INSTALLATION AND WARNINGS

INSTALLATION - UNZIP REAL.ZIP INTO YOUR AOE DIRECTORY. THE AOE PROGRAM WILL
AUTOMATICALLY USE THE THESE FILES INSTEAD USING THE DATA IN THE SIM1.DYN,
SIM2.DYN, AND COMMON.DYN FILES. *NO* CHANGES ARE MADE TO ANY ORIGINAL AOE
FILES, ALTHOUGH IT NEVER HURTS TO MAKE A BACK-UP OF YOUR FILES. OF COURSE,
YOUR USE OF THESE FILES IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK.
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO USE THE MODIFIED FILES SIMPLY DELETE THEM. THE PROGRAM
WILL REVERT BACK TO USING THE UNREALISTIC ORIGINAL DATA.
DYNAMIX DOES NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORT THE HEX EDITING OF THEIR SOFTWARE. IF YOU
ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH AOE USING THIS PATCH, PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT
DYNAMIX. DELETE ALL FILES WHICH CAME WITH THIS PATCH AND SEE IF THE PROBLEM IS
STILL THERE, THEN CONTACT DYNAMIX IF IT IS. IF THE PROBLEM IS ONLY THERE WHEN
YOU ARE USING THIS PATCH, PLEASE CONTACT US. THE ONLY KNOWN "PROBLEM" WHICH
YOU MAY EXPERIENCE IS A SLIGHLTY LONGER LOADING TIME WHEN THE PROGRAM ACCESSES
THE HARD DRIVE.
ALSO NOTE THAT VCR TAPES MADE WHEN USING THIS PATCH MAY NOT FUNCTION IN AOE
PROGRAMS NOT USING IT. LIKEWISE, YOU MAY GET SOME STRANGE RESULTS IF YOU
ATTEMPT TO VIEW EARLIER VCR TAPES WHEN THIS PATCH IS INSTALLED.
THESE MODIFICATIONS WERE MADE WITH THE TIME "SLIDER" AT 50%.

THE P-47 WILL ROLL FASTER
THE P-51 HAS A MODIFIED POWER TO DRAG RATIO. SPEEDS REMAIN ACCURATE BUT
YOU WILL FEEL MORE POWER, ACCELERATION, AND LESS LOSS OF SPEED IN TURNS.
*.TBL FILES FOR P-47, P38, AND P51 INCLUDED
