Shows or hides the character in the window labelled "character."
The character shown or hidden corresponds to the number in the numerical space to the right of the field "K&K" or "JIS" (under the window).
Both kana characters are shown if the syllable consists of two kana.
The character displayed in the window is called "entry character."
Quits the standard work mask and returns to the start menu.
ΓÇó commands:
To show the entry character click the empty box within the field "Character."
To hide the entry character click the X-ed box within the field "Character."
To return to the start menu click the character window.
-Readings-
ΓÇó function:
Shows or hides the readings of the entry character.
The (Sino-Japanese) on-readings are shown in capital letters, (Japanese) kun-readings are shown in small letters.
Uncommon readings or readings which are only used under special conditions are shown in brackets.
Okurigana (= parts of the word to be written in hiragana) are shown in parentheses.
All readings with the same or similar meanings are presented together on one line.
(The readings are displayed in the "Readings" window on the left. On the same line, the corresponding meaning is displayed on the
right in the "Meanings" window. All similar meanings are grouped together in one line.)

-Compounds / Words-
ΓÇó function:
Shows or hides compound words (if the entry character is a kanji) or simple words (if the entry character is a kana) for the entry character, with romanization and meanings.
The readings for the compounds are given in romanization. The compounds (usually five) have been selected according to distribution and importance. Occasionally compounds have been chosen to illustrate the function of the entry character in forming compounds.
In selecting the compounds, only those characters are used which have already been learned according to the progression in
"K&K."
All of these characters can be quickly looked up via their "K&K" number.
If the entry character is a kana, the "Words" window displays words using the kana syllable. As with the kanji compounds, these words have been selected according to frequency. Care has been taken to use only those kana which have been previously learned, i.e., which come before the entry kana in the standard Japanese A-I-U-E-O progression.
ΓÇó commands:
To show compounds and words click the empty box to the left of the commands "Compounds" or "Words." (The window "Compounds" or
"Words" can only be opened if the windows
"Readings" and "Meanings" are closed.)
To look up a character used in the compound, click its K&K number displayed on the right hand side of the window. After looking at the character(s) used in the compound, clicking at a corresponding symbol will again display the compound from which the search for its component characters started. (Returning to the original compound is not possible if the
"Compounds" window of the component characters had been opened.)
To hide compounds and words click the X-ed box to the left of the fields "Compounds" or
"Words."
-Notes_on_Readings-

To enter, change, or delete the user's notes on the readings displayed for the entry character. Shows and hides these notes.

"Notes on Words". To enter, change, or delete notes move the cursor into the opened window designated "Notes on Compounds or "Notes on Words." In addition to notes, other compounds or words can also be entered. The note window will also accept numerals and additional special characters, but not Japanese characters.
The notes can be scrolled up or down by positioning the mouse arrow on the right border of the window. This is necessary when the notes occupy so much room that they cannot be viewed at one time.
To hide the notes, click the X-ed box to the left of the command "Notes on compounds" or
"Notes on Words".
-Script-
ΓÇó function:
Shifts from one of the three writing systems
(hiragana, katakana, kanji) into another system.
ΓÇó commands:
Click the field "Script." This opens a dialog box.
Click the desired writing system in the dialog box.
If no change in writing system is desired click "No change."
-Select_kanji-
ΓÇó function:
Marks the entry character for inclusion in a reference list for later usage (for printing, for example, or for browsing through the list).
ΓÇó commands:
To select the entry character for inclusion in the list click the field "Select character." As many characters as desired may be selected.
(If a list of characters is to be selected by means of the K&K or JIS numbers, click the field "Selected characters." This opens a dialog box in which the option "Add to selected characters" can be clicked, enabling rapid selection of any desired number of characters according to number.)
If a character is selected a second time, the program will respond with "Character already selected."
To cancel the message click the "OK"-button.
To review the contents of the reference list of characters, click the field "Selected characters." (The field becomes visible when the switch arrow between "Sound" and "Help" is clicked.)
The selected characters are represented by their JIS code number, the j├┤y├┤ kanji by their K&K numbers.
The characters are listed in the order in which they were selected, from top to bottom.
By clicking the switch arrow the two options
"Select character" and "Deselect character" can be alternately chosen.
-Deselect_character-
ΓÇó function:
To deselect the entry character from the reference list compiled with the function
"Select character."
ΓÇó commands:
The entry character is deleted from the reference list by clicking the field "Deselect character." (To more quickly delete all the characters in the list, the field "Selected
characters" should be clicked. This opens a dialog box in which the option "Clear all selected characters" can be clicked.)
If the entry character is chosen for deletion although it is not included in the reference list, the program responds with "Character not selected." To cancel the message click the "OK"-button.
By clicking the switch arrow the two options
"Deselect character" and "Select character" can be alternately chosen.
-Selected_characters-
ΓÇó function:
To show the characters selected by means of the "Select character" function. In this mode it is possible to select new characters, to print the character list, or to clear all characters.
ΓÇó commands:
First of all, the command "Selected characters" is made visible by clicking the switch arrow.
When the command "Selected characters" is clicked, the standard work mask is replaced by a dialog box which displays the selected
characters in two reference lists, in the order in which they were selected, by numerical code. (All characters are specified by the JIS code number, j├┤y├┤ kanji also by their K&K number.)
The selected character reference list can be scrolled up and down by moving the cursor along the right border of the window, in case
the number of characters excedes the frame of the window.
In order to select new characters, the K&K or JIS numbers can be written into the "Add character to list" line. (This method is faster than adding each individual entry character by
loading and clicking it.)
Each individual entry in the K&K or JIS line under the "Add character to list" field is confirmed by pressing ENTER.
By clicking "Clear all selected characters" it is possible to delete the K&K and JIS numbers of all selected characters.
(If only the numbers of certain characters are to be deleted, this can be done either by first clicking "Deselect specified characters" and then the respective numbers in the list or by searching each character in the working mask and then clicking the field "Deselect
character".)
The command "Print selected characters" allows the production of flash-cards, posters, and labels of all characters with or without stroke count, readings, meanings, and com-pounds/words in different sizes.
By clicking the button with the right-angle arrow the "Selected characters" dialog box is closed and the standard work mask reappears.
-ask_me-
ΓÇó function:
To test the readings and meanings of kanji.
ΓÇó commands:
To activate the function, the field "Ask me" is clicked and changes color.
In order to test which reading of a kanji is to be associated with a certain meaning, it is necessary to close the "Readings" window and open the "Meanings" window.
(If the "Readings" window is open, the message "Hide window 'Readings', please" will appear as soon as a meaning is clicked.)
When the English translation word is clicked in the "Meanings" window, a dialog box is opened. The/A corresponding reading (i.e., the/a reading which corresponds to the meaning of the entry character selected in English) with parantheses indicating okurigana is to be entered in the text line.
If the answer is correct, the program confirms.
If there is more than one reading, the program will request additional readings.
In case of error, the request to enter the/a reading is repeated.
In order to test the meaning of a kanji, the
"Readings" window must be open and the
"Meanings" window closed.
(If the "Meanings" window is open, the message "Hide window 'Meanings', please" will appear as soon as a reading is clicked.)
When a reading is clicked in the "Reading" window, a dialog box is opened. The/A correct translation is to be entered in the text line.
If the answer is correct, the program confirms.
If there is more than one meaning for the reading clicked, the
program will request additional meanings.
In case of error, the request to enter the/a reading is repeated.
If the field "Voice" is activated, then a given reading will be pronounced whenever it is clicked.
By clicking the button "Cancel" it is possible to end the reading and meaning test whenever desired.
To deactivate the function, "Ask me" is clicked again and changes color.
-Selection-
ΓÇó function:
Makes possible learning, drill, and searching within a list of previously selected characters.
ΓÇó commands:
To activate the function, the field "Selection" is clicked and and changes color.
At the same time the word "Selected" appears instead of the two number fields und the field
"Area K&K".
The character selection is restricted to the previously compiled character selection for reviewing, searching, or repetition.
To deactivate the function, "Selection" is clicked again and changes color.
-Random-
ΓÇó function:
When characters are browsed through, they are shown in random order, instead of according to the JIS or K&K numbers.
ΓÇó commands:
To activate the function, the field "Random" is clicked and changes color.
Any set of previously selected characters can now be browsed through in random order, complete with all associated information
(readings, meanings, or compounds etc).
To deactivate the function, "Random" is clicked again and changes color.
-Voice-
ΓÇó function:
To enable the user to hear the readings of all kana and j├┤y├┤ kanji, either with the built-in speaker, with an external speaker, or with
(Walkman) headphones.
ΓÇó commands:
To activate the function, the field "Voice" is clicked and changes color.
(The command "Voice" can only be activated when the "Readings" window is open.)
When the reading of a character is clicked, the reading is pronounced.
The volume can be regulated in the menu
"Control field" (under the Apple symbol) before the program "MacJAIL Script" is loaded.
To deactivate the function, "Voice" is clicked again and changes color.
-Switch_arrow-
ΓÇó function:
To shift back and forth between the following field pairs (= functions) in the lower border:
By clicking the switch arrow it is possible to choose either the fields "Select character,"
"Ask me," "Selection," and "Random," or the fields "Deselect character" and "Selected
characters."
-Help-
ΓÇó function:
Short explanatory texts can be displayed at will for each of the fields, symbols, and windows displayed on the working mask.
ΓÇó commands:
To activate the function, the field "Help" is clicked and changes color.
When a field or a symbol on the working mask is clicked, the pertaining help text appears to explain its meaning and how it is to be used.
To deactivate the function, "Help" is clicked again and changes color.
-Quit-
ΓÇó function:
Ends the programm "MacJAIL Script." Another program can be loaded or the computer can be turned off.
ΓÇó commands:
The field "Quit" is clicked.
-Symbol_for_stroke_count-
ΓÇó function:
Shows the stroke count, the order of strokes, and the direction of strokes for each entry character.
ΓÇó commands:
When this symbol is clicked, the standard work mask is modified slightly. Those fields which no longer function in stroke cound mode
change color (gray). A new field with a right-angle arrow appears instead of the symbols for "Stroke count," "Magnifying glass," and
"Automatic Browsing". The first stroke of the character appears in the character window, marked "1" for "first stroke."
The stroke count numeral appears at the beginning of each stroke, thus designating its direction.
When the right arrow underneath the character window is clicked, the next stroke appears with its stroke count numeral, until the character is complete.
When the character is completed, all strokes are visible with stroke count numeral.
To view the entry character in its entirety with stroke count numerals, instead of having it built up stroke by stroke, the left arrow is clicked as soon as the first stroke appears.
The right-angle arrow is clicked to leave the stroke count mask and return to the standard work mask.
-Symbol_for_magnifying_glass-
ΓÇó function:
To search for a character.
ΓÇó commands:
When the magnifying glass is clicked, a search mask appears.
This search mask has a field for each different method of searching for a character.
Search is possible either by entering the reading or the meaning of a character or its compounds, or by entering any notes which
may have been made on the note pad pertaining to the character or
compound, or by means of the K&K or JIS number.
According to the method used for searching, the circle in the appropriate field is clicked on. A black dot appears inside this circle. Now the dialog box can be opened either by clicking the black dot or the magnifying glass within the character window. As search term a reading, meaning, note, or number related to the searched for character can be entered.
Once the search term has been entered in the answer space, the ENTER button is pushed to begin the search operation. The operation also starts when OK is clicked. The searched for
character is displayed on the monitor within the framework of the standard work mask.
Often one search operation will yield a number of different kanji or kanji compounds. In this case, the kanji or compound with the smallest K&K number is displayed first. If this is not the desired kanji or compound, it is possible to browse, either manually or automatically, until the searched for character appears. The possible characters are displayed one after the other according to their K&K number, from smallest to largest. This increases the possibility that the desired character will be the first kanji, or one of the first kanji.
A click of the right-angle arrow immediately displays the standard work mask, even if no search entry has been made.
-Symbol_for_browsing-
ΓÇó function:
Automatic browsing within a previously selected list of characters. Speed can be varied.
This function can be used to review, to practice, and to search for characters and all pertaining information.
ΓÇó commands:
The speed of browsing should first of all be regulated in the field "Browsing".
Before browsing, it is also necessary to designate the K&K area (whether browsing should occur within a certain list of previous-ly selected characters or within a certain
area), and the order (whether according to the K&K number or at random).
When the symbol for browsing is clicked, automatic browsing begins.
To end browsing the symbol is clicked again.
-Left_and_right_arrow-
ΓÇó function:
Allows manual browsing between characters
(with all pertaining information), forwards and backwards within a previously selected list or within an area.
The order of browsing is determined either by K&K numbers, by JIS numbers, or at random as desired by the user.
In the stoke count mode, the two arrows can be used to show the stroke count, the order of strokess, and the direction of strokes for each entry character.
ΓÇó commands:
When the right arrow is clicked, the character is shown with the next highest K&K (or JIS) number. Clicking the left arrow displays the character with the next lowest number.
To change from JIS to K&K numbers (or the reverse) the field showing either "JIS" or "K&K" should be clicked. The field shows the present system and changes the number of the kanji accordingly.
To browse at random instead of according to JIS or K&K numbers, the field "Random" is activated.
In the stroke count mode, clicking the right or left arrow shows the individual strokes which make up the character. (More information under "Symbol for stroke count").
-Area K&K-
ΓÇó function:
The field "Area K&K" shows the lowest and the
highest number of the kanji in the area.
Am area is different from a selected kanji list. An area contains all the kanji between the given numbers shown in the right and the left number fields.
This function enables the user to study, review (for instance by automatic browsing), and to search for a character within a
previously determined area.
ΓÇó commands:
When the left number field is clicked, a number can be entered in the dialog box. This number is the lowest K&K number, the kanji where the first cut is to be made.
Clicking the right number field also opens the dialog box, where the highest K&K number can be entered. Here the second cut is made.
Both windows are closed by clicking the "OK"-button.
The desired lowest and highest K&K numbers are displayed in the number fields.
-K&K/ JIS-
ΓÇó function:
The K&K or JIS number of each entry character is displayed in the field to the right of the
"K&K"/"JIS" field.
These numbers are used to identify characters, in order for instance to determine areas or to select into a selected list. The numbers can also be used to search, and are useful in communicating or exchanging data.
The "K&K" numbers designate the order in which the 1945 j├┤y├┤ kanji are presented in
"Kanji & Kana. A Handbook and Dictionary of the Japanese Writing System" by W. Hadamitz-ky and M. Spahn, published by Charles E. Tuttle Co., Rutland (Vermont) and Tokyo.
There is no K&K number for characters outside of the j├┤y├┤ kanji, as well as for the kana. These characters only have a JIS number.
The JIS numbers designate the order in which the characters appear in "Japan Industrial Standard. Code for the Japanese Graphic Character Set for Information Interchange. JIS C 6226-1983", published by the Japanese Standards Association, Tokyo.

By clicking "K&K" or "JIS" it is possible to switch to the other system.
-Start of learning-
ΓÇó function:
To show at what time the program was loaded.
This makes it possible to check at what time the user began to work with the program.
ΓÇó commands:
The start menu has a command "Program Start." When this is clicked, the standard work mask appears. The start time is automatically ad-justed and remains unchanged until quit time.
-Time of learning-
ΓÇó function:
To show in hours and minutes how much time has elapsed since the user has started to work with the program.
This enables constant checking of the length of a given learning session.

When the command "Program Start" is clicked in the start menu, the learning time is automatically adjusted to 00:00. The time is
automatically clocked until quit time.

To regulate the speed for automatic browsing.
