Telex is the simplest network message system. It allows anyone to send messages to other users attached to an AppleTalk network. These messages appear on screen without any user actions.
Telex works with all flavors of AppleTalk including LocalTalk, PhoneNet, EtherTalk, and TokenTalk (I hope╔).
Getting Started
Telex consists of two files: one of them is INIT file, the other is FONT/DA mover file.
To get started with Telex, simply copy INIT file (called "Telex") into your System Folder and copy a Desk Accessory from FONT/DA mover file (called TelexDA) into your System file. You also can use utilities as Suitcase II, etc. Make sure that AppleTalk is turned on, then restart your machine.
Using Telex
The INIT file installs "Listener" which receives all Telex messages sent by other users and shows these messages on your screen using Notification Manager.
The Desk Accessory is used to send messages. To send a message:
Ñ choose an AppleTalk zone (if you have internet bridges at your local network);
Ñ choose user(s) to send to;
Ñ type message;
Ñ press Send button, or double-click on user name.
Disabling Telex
If you wish not to have Telex Listener installed when you startup your
Macintosh you can press mouse button during startup. The regular Telex
icon will not be shown, rather a similar icon with a large X is shown.
This tells you that Telex has not been installed.
Compatibility
I wrote this funny program while learning AppleTalk interfaces, and I didn't test it intensively.
Please, email me, if you find any bugs - I'll try to find time to fix them.
