Which file to get between suntar.sit and suntar.uu ?
If you can download the .sit (or .sit.hqx) file to a Mac and extract
it, get it. Otherwise, if you may download files to a UNIX machine
with a 3.5" floppy disk drive, get the .uu file: by following the
instructions and using universally available UNIX tools you may use
that UNIX disk drive to create a Macintosh disk containing suntar,
a Mac <-> UNIX communication program, which has the same hardware
requirements needed to create that disk and is much more reliable
and easy to use than this first transfer. With suntar, downloading
anything from UNIX to a Macintosh will no more be a problem.
By using suntar, to transfer data between a UNIX machine and a Mac
becomes easy, even in conditions which exclude the most common
solutions, modems and LANs. And a freeware program requiring as
extra hardware only a floppy disk is very cheap...
Suntar and the method to rebuild a Mac disk under UNIX were tried
with SPARCstations and IBM RISC/6000, but others machines should
work as well.
