"MAGIC CANDLE II" ─ VGA ONLY─ Mouse Version 2.00 Upgrade
Our customers asked for Mouse Support and they got it!
**NOTE: THIS VERSION IS FOR VGA ONLY - DO NOT USE IF EGA/TANDY**
This special MOUSE SUPPORT Version 2.00 Upgrade will work
with VGA only. If you have EGA or Tandy 16-Color graphics, please
contact Mindcraft at: (310) 320-5215. Or write:
Mindcraft Software, Inc.
2291 205th Street, Suite 201
Torrance, CA 90501
Instructions for upgrade:
Unzip the .ZIP file into the Hard Drive directory containing
the "Magic Candle II" game. Use the overwrite option (-o) to replace the
existing files. This version only works on VGA machines, do not copy these
files if you EGA or Tandy 16-color graphics.
SOME PROBLEMS FIXED IN THIS 2.00 VERSION:
Problems discovered using magical scrolls have been fixed.
Rare occurances of party members disappearing on assignments and incorrect
coordinates when using mindstones are also fixed.
A stand-alone program to restore characters already lost
on assignment is included. In addition, a few customers have reported
instances of characters which, according to a mindstone, have arrived
at correct stronghold locations but do not appear when the stronghold
is visited. A list of commands are given to edit the save game and
allow these characters to appear.
We thank the players that called and made us aware of
all these previously unknown bugs. As we can only fix problems when
they can be reproduced, we appreciate those players that sent us their
problem save games so that we were actually able to see the problems
happen and fix them.
This disk also contains a new version of the MC2INST program:
If the MC2INST.EXE program has problems scanning your
hardware, an option has been added to allow you to skip this function.
Due to the fact that no hardware was scanned all the questions will
default and when you select options it will tell you that you do not
have that particular hardware. However, you can override the default
options and enter the correct settings for your machine.
NOTE: IF YOU HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH INSTALLING THE GAME ONTO YOUR
PARTICULAR HARD DRIVE SETUP, THEN READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE MANUAL
INSTALL PROCESS.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
RECLAIM.EXE Program to Recover lost characters
The RECLAIM.EXE program will allow you to restore characters which
have been lost while they were on assignment. Before running this program
make sure that the character which you are seeking is indeed "lost". In
"Magic Candle II", the NPC's (non-player characters) may become bored with
their assignments and leave, returning to their original starting point. This
is based on their Loyalty and may be one reason why he/she is not at the
assigned position. Also, the character may have been captured on the journey
from their point of origin to their destination. This is based on the
characters Stealth skill. If the NPC has been captured, then he/she would be
in one of the jails in one of the dungeons along the way. If these are not
the cases then this program is for you. First run UPDATE to place reclaim.exe
in your"Magic Candle II" directory.
Type RECLAIM and press Enter to run the program. The screen will
display a list of all the saved games in that directory. Select the
appropriate saved game using the cursor keys or the numeric keypad with the
numlock function DISABLED. Once the saved game is selected a list of
characters currently on assignment in that saved game will appear.
*IMPORTANT* The party may not have met some of the characters on the list.
DO NOT reclaim these characters as it may cause further problems. If you wish
to restore a character, move the cursor to that character and press Enter.
Reclaiming a character will return him/her to their original starting place.
*ALSO IMPORTANT* If characters on legitimate assignments are restored, they
will cease their current activities (i.e. stop making money, learning spells,
etc.). When the appropriate characters have been restored, exit the menu by
pressing ESC. Save the changes (at this point you may choose not to save the
changes if you have made a mistake), and exit the program (or rechoose your
saved game and repeat the process above until you are satisfied with the
changes). The lost characters should now appear in their original starting
locations.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEBUG Process to Fix characters not appearing at Strongholds
We have received a few calls about problems with characters
missing that are supposedly at a stronghold. Correct mindstone coordinates
appear but the character is not at the stronghold.
The chart below gives the "debug" value for the various
NPCs that join the party. This will only fix the situation in which
a character says (via the mindstone) that they have arrived at astronghold
and the correct stronghold coordinates are given but when the party
is inside the stronghold, that character does not appear.
PLEASE MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF THE FFSAV*.MCS FILES IN THE "MAGIC
CANDLE II" HARD DRIVE DIRECTORY BEFORE ALTERING GAMES USING THESE
DEBUG COMMANDS!
1) To alter the save game, go to the Magic Candle II directory
on the hard drive. For example:
C:
CD \MC2
2) Type: debug ffsav&.mcs & press Enter. "&"
= save game letter A-H
EXAMPLE: debug ffsavb.mcs - would edit the saved game in postion
B.
3) Type: e #### FF and press Enter. "####"
is the character's number from table below.
EXAMPLE: e 24E0 FF - would edit Sakar.
4) Type: w and press Enter.
5) Type: q and press Enter.
NPC Character values for "The Magic Candle II":
24E0 Sakar 24F9 Fiz 2512 Nehor 252B Tuff
2544 Ben 255D Crys 2576 Ralle 258F Durin
25A8 Eflun 25C1 Eldai 25DA Gil 25F3 Grolf
260C Gus 2625 Jimbo 263E Kruga 2657 Lupi
2670 Stref 2689 Madir 26A2 Perin 26BB Nimmo
26D4 Buz 26ED Nazim 2706 Orbo 271F Polo
2738 Argas 2751 Rebnard, King 276A Rexor
2783 Rogga 279C Subia 27B5 Tamas 27CE Mona
NOTE: AGAIN, USING THE DEBUG COMMANDS GIVEN ABOVE WILL ONLY
FIX THE SITUATION OF A CHARACTER WHICH IS AT A STRONGHOLD ACCORDING
TO A MINDSTONE BUT DOES NOT ACTUALLY APPEAR WHEN THE PARTY VISITS
THE STRONGHOLD.

HOW TO DO THE MANUAL INSTALL
In some rare circumstances, customers have not been able
to install The Magic Candle II onto their hard drive. If this is happening
to you, then these instructions are for you. Only use these instructions
if you have been unable to install the "Magic Candle II" game
onto your hard drive.
1) To do Manual install, you must first select the letter of
the hard drive (C: for example) and press Enter.
2) Type CD \ and press Enter to get to the main
directory on hard drive.
3) Type MKDIR \MC2 and press Enter (or another
directory if not \MC2)
4) Place the original "Magic Candle II" disk #1 into
a floppy drive. Type the letter of the selected floppy drive and press
Enter (For Example, A:)
5) Type the Decomp command followed by the file name on
the floppy diskette with the .MC2 extension (including drive letter),
and then the full path where game is to be installed including hard
drive letter, followed by an additional "\". The file name
on the diskette is MC2LD1.MC2 for the 1st 3 1/2" diskette (low density)
or MC2HD1.MC2 for the 1st High Density 5 1/4" diskette. {HD for High
Density, LD for Low Density}.
EXAMPLES:
DECOMP A:MC2HD1.MC2 C:\MC2\
This would install from Drive A: High Density 5 1/4" Diskette to Drive
C: in the \MC2 directory.
DECOMP B:MC2LD1.MC2 C:\FORTY4\
This would install from Drive B: Low Density 3 1/2" Diskette to Drive
D: in a \FORTY4 directory.
6) Repeat the DECOMP command for disk #2 of High Density 5 1/4"
and Disks #2 and #3 of Low Density 3 1/2" versions but change the
file name of the .MC2 file. The file on Disk # 2 of High Density
5 1/4" is called MC2HD2.MC2 or MC2LD2.MC2 for Disk #2 Low Density.
EXAMPLE:
DECOMP A:MC2HD2.MC2 C:\MC2\
Would continue the install from A: High Density 5 1/4" Disk #2 to
C:\MC2 directory.
7) Once all disks have had the .MC2 compressed files decompressed,
the game will be installed. Place the upgrade diskette in flopy drive
and follow the upgrade procedure to update files on the hard drive.
You must run the MC2INST.EXE program to set your machine's
configuration before playing. Select Configure once the MC2INST program
is run and answer NO if asked about new copying of files.
