Subject: Query about PCNFS and NCSA Telnet.
Date: Wed, 21 Dec 88 13:14:06 GMT
I have had some problems with runing NCSA Telnet 2.1 when I have PCNFS from
SUN installed. Do you know if NCSA Telnet 2.2 can run with PCNFS.
Thanks.
Gardar.

In most cases, NCSA Telnet can run, work and then quit without conflicting
with PC-NFS. In effect, NCSA Telnet "borrows" the board and then
returns it to PC-NFS. They CANNOT both use the board at the same time.
So, FTPing to a PC-NFS volume will fail.

Subject: Problem w/ Telnet on 386
We are running Telnet V2.2 on both a AT-compatible and a 386 machine. On the
386, if we enter telnet without a session (getting into server mode), the
server doesn't respond. This problem does not occur on the 286 machine.
Both machines use 3c501's and I believe the config.tel files are correct.
The interrupt on the 386 is IRQ3, whereas on the AT it is IRQ5. Could there
be a conflict, and would this cause this kind of problem? The server works
fine once a session is started, or if started from ftp.
Any Ideas?

We finally reproduced and confirmed this problem. It occurs with 3C501
boards ONLY. They don't get turned on properly when telnet uses server
mode. It only happens with some boards in some machines, while other,
apparently identical setups work fine. So, we will have to try to
jump-start the board in server mode in the next release.
Anyone else track down this problem and have more to add?

Subject: Support for 3C503 3com Board
I was wondering if you plan to support the 3c503 board from
3com in the near future. Can you tell me the differnce between
the 3c503 and the 3c501? I also persuing this question with
3com.
Thanks very much.

Yes, we will try to support it in the next version. The two boards have
different designs. The 3C503 is more modern with plenty of buffer space
whereas the 3C501 only holds one packet at a time. They are not compatible,
but a lot of software exists which supports both kinds. Tim K.

Subject: multifinder problems
If I use telnet under multifinder, quit telnet, and then open word, word will
unexpectedly quit. Then when I try to restart, my mac locks up and I have to
use the reset button.
Have you seen this before? Is there a way around the problem? This happens
on both a Mac Plus and a Mac II.

Which version of NCSA Telnet is running? Anyone else have this type
of problem? Could be out of memory. Tim K.

Subject: Possible minor bug
NCSA telnet bombs on me whenever I change the time in the control panel.
I am running it on an SE over Appletalk with system 4.2 and finder 6.0.
There is 1MB of ram in the machine, and it is running these INITs: Easy
Access, Interbase, Pyro!, Responder, Softalk, and Tops.
Sorry if this has already been reported.

P.S. The ID on the bomb message is 03.

Conflicts with Pyro and Tops have been known to stop NCSA Telnet all
by themselves. Conflicts between Pyro! (because early versions stopped the
timer processes), TOPS, Softalk and NCSA Telnet could happen at any time
because they all have to co-exist when accessing the network. We keep
our eye out for anything we can do the help the situation, but some
combinations are incompatible.
You also may have run out of memory.
I cannot reproduce the bug on my machine which doesn't have all of those
INITs. - Tim K. ]
