6747 B# 2456 HR2510 KD2SL ALLOH 890124 * News Flash! * Uniden HR2510 Recall
!!
Forwarding path: WA2PVV KD6TH WB2HBZ
I have just learned that Uniden has "recalled" all "President" HR2510
10m transceivers from authorized dealers and wholesalers. They will
shortly be replaced with modified units, with epoxy covering the area
where the out-of-band frequency mod is performed. Presumably the
recalled units will be epoxied and shipped back to distributors. Also,
the microprocessor (is being)/(will be) re-designed to prevent any
possibility of easily making the frequency mod. It is not known when
units with the new micro will be shipped.
This has been confirmed by calls to Uniden, and to major mail-order
houses which carry the HR2510. The recall apparently came about 2
weeks ago. At the time of this writing, not one retailer/wholesaler
contacted had any HR2510s in stock, but aany said they would have
new (presumably epoxied) units in a few days.
I ordered mine only 16 days ago, just beating the recall. Mine was
purchased through a large national wholesaler that serves small
retail outfits like my part-time telephone business. When I called
today to confirm the recal,, m salesman said, "When Uniden contacted
us about the recall two weeks ago, we told them we were sold out.
We then sold our remaining units, and are truly sold out until the
new (presumably epoxied) units arrive." It seems that the HR2510
must be a fast moving item if they are willing to lie to Uniden so
as to sell as many as possible.
Will this make modified/modifiable HR2510s skyrocket in value?
Probably not too much. However, the question, "By the way, is your
HR2510 pre- or post- epoxy?" may become frequently heard by users
of the HR2510, and especially heard by those who try to sell one
at a hamfest. I can picture them being opened up for "inspection"!
The reason I did the mod on mine is so I can monitor local traffic
info when travelling without needing another rig. Wouldn't it make
sense for Uniden to re-design the microprocessor to allow wide RX
coverage (like current day 2m HTs), but restrict TX to 28-29.6??
That would be the ideal solution, in my opinion.
At any rate, it is gratifying to see Uniden attacking this problem.
73, and happy 10m mobiling!
