This door game is distributed under the SHAREWARE concept. This
concept gives you the chance to "try before you buy", and see if it
meets your needs.
I've decided to break away from the standard "30 day trial period"
that many door authors are using and instead go to a much simpler
and more realistic policy. This is simply; Try it on your BBS.
If you like it and your users like it, then register it. If it's not
good enough to register, then delete it.
While I'd like you to register my doors as soon as possible, I'm also
realistic enough to know that different boards have different requirements
and interests, and sometimes it takes longer before a game catches on,
or a sysop can get to the Doors on his list to register. And frankly,
I'd rather you ran it for awhile and register, than try it for a short
period of time and delete it. Nobody wins that way...I lose out on a
registration and your users lose out on the chance of having the
registered door to play.
Once registered, you will also be allowed to use additional functions
in the TRIVEDIT program. (Adding, editing and printing questions,
editing and printing users) Registration is good for any future
versions of the product. Once registered, you are registered for LIFE!
The above "extended trial" statement was copied with permission from
Mike Jordan of M&S Doors.
As a shareware program, Plain Jane Trivia may be freely distributed.
Shareware distributors may distribute copies of Plain Jane Trivia on
disk for a modest disk duplication charge not to exceed $4 per disk.

Using the Trivia Editor
-----------------------
*********************************************************************
IMPORTANT!!!! THE TRIVIA EDITOR IS NOT MULTINODE!!! WHEN USING IT,
ALL USERS MUST BE OUT OF THE DOOR!!!!
*********************************************************************
To start the trivia editor, type the following on the command line:
TRIVEDIT
After starting up the program, you will see the main menu. The
options are pretty self explanatory, but here are short descriptions
for each of them:
Add New Question
----------------
If you choose this option, a window will open with the next record
number filled in, and blank fields for a new question. The only field
that defaults to something is the answer F choice. That always
defaults to "None of the above". Fill in the choices, and when done,
press F10 to save the question, or press ESC to abort entering the
question. You will then return to the main menu where you can enter
another question, etc...
Change Existing Question
------------------------
If you choose this option, you will be prompted for the question
number, and after entering that, you will be shown a window just as if
you were entering the question, except that it will have all the
information filled in. This is useful for questions that have been
mis-typed, or possibly have the wrong answer in them. As before,
press F10 to save your changes, or press ESC to abort them.
Print Questions
---------------
Choosing this option will open another menu asking if you want to
print to a file or to a printer. If you choose file, another box will
open up, asking what filename you wish to print to. If you choose the
printer option, it will come up with another small menu asking what
printer port to print to. As it is progressing, it will show a box of
what record number it is on and how many records it is printing.
Edit User Record
----------------
This option allows you to edit the following fields in the user
record: First Name, Last Name, First Date On, Last Date On, Questions
Answered Last Date, Total Questions Answered, Total Questions Correct.
You will be prompted for the user number, and after entering the
number, a window with that users information will appear. When
finished editing the record, press F10 to save, or press ESC to abort
the edit.
Print User Listing
------------------
This option flows exactly like the print questions option. It will
open another menu asking if you want to print to a file or to a
printer. If you choose file, another box will open up, asking what
filename you wish to print to. If you choose the printer option, it
will come up with another small menu asking what printer port to print
to. As it is progressing, it will show a box of what record number it
is on and how many records it is printing.
Import Trivia Questions
-----------------------
Choosing this option will open a small box asking for the filename to
import questions from. After entering that, it will show how many
questions have been imported. The following is what the import file
should look like:
Line 1: Question Line 1
Line 2: Question Line 2
Line 3: Answer A
Line 4: Answer B
Line 5: Answer C
Line 6: Answer D
Line 7: Answer E
Line 8: Answer F
Line 9: Correct Answer (A,B,C,D,E or F)
and then repeat those lines for every question. If you have more
questions on what the file should look like, choose the Export Trivia
Questions option from the menu, and examine the file created from
that.
Export Trivia Questions
-----------------------
This option will export ALL questions from the QUESTION.DAT file in
the current directory. It will prompt you for a file name to export
to, and then proceed to export all the questions to that file. If you
need to, you can edit the file to delete the unwanted entries, or
create a new QUESTION.DAT by running the program in another directory
and entering the questions from there.
Exit
----
I think this option is self-explanatory, although you can also exit
the program by pressing the ESC key.
Support
-------
If you have problems, I will try and help as best I can, whether you
are registered or not. Registered users will get priority over non-
registered users, though. You may get help with problems by calling
Williams Computer Services BBS at (503) 631-8439, or by writing to
the author at the following addresses:
FIDO : 1:105/278
US Mail:
Rob Williams
18370 S. Henrici Road
Oregon City, OR 97045
Registering Plain Jane Trivia
-----------------------------
Registration of Plain Jane Trivia is only $15.00 for single node
or $20.00 for Multi-Node. Please use the form in the file
REGISTER.FRM. When you register, you will receive a registration
key that will turn your version into a registered version.
Registered users will have access to the special area of the support
BBS for additional questions, and also be able to add new questions,
edit questions and users, print questions and users, and import and
export questions. You will also be able to use the make-up/play
ahead feature of the game.
Registration applies to all future updates of the game. Once you
are registered, you are registered for LIFE!
Acknowledgements
----------------
Thanks go to the following people/companies (Listed in no particular order):
- Mustang Software for creating Wildcat!
- Randy Hunt and Mark Goodwin for creating RMDoor which was used
to create this game.
- Mike Jordan for his help with some of the routines, and for the
idea of the make up days, and also help in testing, and his help
in helping me get started in door programming.
- Marcus and Ronda Eikenberry for their help in testing and finding
a few stubborn bugs.
- Bob Ainsbury for creating the Turbo Technojock Toolkit, and not
crippling it. This toolkit was also used for the TRIVEDIT
program.
- Gayle Davis and all the people that have contributed to the
SWAG archives. I have used various snippets from those
archives, as well as them giving me good ideas on how to
proceed next. Thank you.
There are probably more people that I have forgotten, but these have been
the most instrumental in the writing of this program.
