  3. The National Republican party grew out 
  4. of a split in the Democratic-
  5. Republican party. The National 
  6. Republican Party was headed by 
  7. incumbent President John Quincy Adams, 
  8. who believed in a strong federal 
  9. government. The party fielded 
  10. candidates only twice--in the national 
  11. elections of 1828 and 1832. In both 
  12. elections, the National Republican 
  13. candidate was defeated by Andrew 
  14. Jackson. After the election of 1832, 
  15. the party dissolved, but its 
  16. membersprovided a base of support for 
  17. the Whig Party.
