National Republican Party (1828-1832)
The National Republican party grew out
of a split in the Democratic-
Republican party. The National
Republican Party was headed by
incumbent President John Quincy Adams,
who believed in a strong federal
government. The party fielded
candidates only twice--in the national
elections of 1828 and 1832. In both
elections, the National Republican
candidate was defeated by Andrew
Jackson. After the election of 1832,
the party dissolved, but its
membersprovided a base of support for
the Whig Party.
