  7. Minutes of the SNMP Application Management BOF (SAM)
  8.  
  9. The key result of the SAM BOF was to propose the establishment of a new
  10. IETF working group, Mail and Directory Management (MADMAN).
  11.  
  12. Background

  14. The BOF was called by Steve Kille, for the following reasons:
  15.  
  16.  
  17.    o A belief that this area was of general interest, and merited an
  18.      activity of IETF standardisation.
  19.  
  20.    o A specification produced by Steve Kille, Dave Partain, Thomas
  21.      Lenggenhager, and Wengyik Yeong, was submitted as input to the
  22.      meeting and had been implemented by the ISODE Consortium.
  23.  
  24.    o Knowledge that at least three other firms had implemented
  25.      equivalent functionality.
  26.

  28. The goals of the BOF were to determine if there was sufficient interest
  29. to establish a working group on this topic and to produce IETF
  30. specifications.

  34. This activity cuts across many of the IETF areas.  The following Working
  35. Groups were identified as being relevant.

  39.    o IFIP 6.5 on Email Management
  40.    o Host Resources MIB
  41.    o DNS MIB

  44. Subsequent to the meeting, Steve Kille obtained a copy of the CDC MIB,
  45. which can be made available to anyone interested.

  47. Discussion
  48.  
  49. Attendees described their positions and reasons for attending.  There
  50. was a clear and strong view that this area was important, and should be
  51. established as a new working group, independent of those listed above.
  52. There was overlap with the DNSMIB, but the level of detail precluded
  53. extending it to the broader goals discussed here.  The Email Management

  61. Working Group was working with a similar area, but had much broader and
  62. longer term goals.  Specific points agreed on direction:
  63.  
  64.  
  65.    o That this area was of substantialinterest.
  66.  
  67.    o The MIB(s) should be small and focussed.
  68.  
  69.    o Time scales should be as short as possible, as there was a clear
  70.      operational need.  All documents should be finalised by July 1993.
  71.  
  72.    o MIBs should support both OSI and TCP/IP applications.
  73.  
  74.    o Care should be taken to avoid OSI terminology, as this may alienate
  75.      parts of the IETF community that are OSI-hostile.

  77.    o The SAM proposal should be used as a basis, but be split into three
  78.      documents.

  80.    o The Working Group should be in the Applications Area.

  83. It as agreed that the following documents were targets, based on the SAM
  84. proposal.  Editor in brackets:

  92. There were two detailed technical discussions worth reporting.  Ned
  93. noted that there needed to be a more general ``channel''model, as the
  94. per-MTA monitoring would be difficult for some MTAs to support.  He
  95. proposed a number of detailed changes, and would handle adding these.
  96. The issue of message store was considerd.  Steve Kille suggested that
  97. this would be a necessary extension to the basicwork to be handled by
  98. this Group.  Some concern was expressed about privacy issues.  Marshall
  99. Rose said that this should not prevent the MIB from being specified.
