  21. The Minutes of the SNMP Application Monitoring BOF (SAM), which met
  22. during the November 1992 IETF, were accepted without any comments.  The
  23. Group then moved on to a review of the Charter for the MADMAN BOF. The
  24. following decisions were reached:

  26.  
  27.    o Monitoring of Message Store is added to the Charter.  Message Store
  28.      does include X.400(88) Message Store, POP, IMAP...
  29.  
  30.    o The management of the applications is not a working item for the
  31.      Group.  The MIB enables MTA and DSA managers to detect when things
  32.      go wild by monitoring the most important system variables.
  33.  
  34.    o The application monitoring MIB is planned to be finalised for the
  35.      Amsterdam IETF.
  36.  
  37.    o The DSA and MTA monitoring MIBs are planned for the Fall 1993 IETF.
  38.  
  39.    o Work on the Message Store MIB will start after the Fall 1993 IETF.
  40.  
  41.    o The IFIP Working Group on email management has a more general
  42.      approach.  Good relations are ensured by cross participation of
  43.      Working Group members and the sharing of documents.

  46. The remainder of the session was spent in reviewing various documents.

  49.    o Application Monitoring MIB
  50.  
  51.       -  It is based on Steve's original proposal and should form a
  52.          framework for all network applications.
  53.       -  A name string will be added.

  61.       -  A version indication per application is needed.
  62.       -  The concept on representation of processes in the host MIB will
  63.          be checked.
  64.       -  There are already two other MIBs defined, a very short one from
  65.          HP and one from CDC, concentrating on Mail and Directory.

  68.    o DSA monitoring MIB
  69.  
  70.       -  Additional variables:  operations pending, active chained
  71.          operations to other DSAs, current number of requests from
  72.          clients in process, counters for replications, fail indication.

  75.    o MTA Monitoring MIB
  76.  
  77.       -  Support now for multiple MTAs on a single system is added.
  78.       -  A new abstraction has been added:  channel.  This is to get
  79.          some figures out of very simple MTAs.  A problem is deferred
  80.          delivered messages and alarms set on `oldest message per
  81.          channel'.
  82.       -  A counter for rejected messages is added.
  83.       -  A separate document is needed, also an RFC, to define object
  84.          identifiers as a basis for identifying TCP services based on
  85.          their port number.
  86.       -  Glenn volunteers to work on a layered model of the MTA
  87.          monitoring approach.  An association layer which receives and
  88.          sends the messages and a higher level which routes and modifies
  89.          (in case of gateway functions) the messages.

  92.    o Message Store MIB
  93.  
  94.       -  Monitor UAs connected to the message store, submission,
  95.          retrieval, messages locked in the store.
  96.       -  The MIB should support capacity planning.
  97.       -  Ed Reed volunteered to work on a document to study the issues
  98.          involved.
