  24. Description of Working Group:

  26. The Host Resources MIB Working Group is chartered to produce exactly
  27. one document that defines SNMP MIB objects that instrument
  28. characteristics common to all Internet hosts. The goal of this work is
  29. to address the urgent operational need in the Internet community for
  30. management of host systems. Owing to this urgency, the working group
  31. will focus exclusively on the alignment of existing MIB technology in
  32. order to achieve common solutions in a timely manner.
  33.  
  34. For purposes of this effort, the term ``Internet host'' is construed to
  35. mean any computer that communicates with other similar computers
  36. attached to the Internet and that is directly used by one or more human
  37. beings. Although the work of the group does not necessarily apply to
  38. devices whose primary function is communications services (e.g.,
  39. terminal servers, routers, bridges, monitoring equipment), such
  40. relevance is not explicitly precluded.  The single MIB produced shall
  41. instrument attributes common to all Internet hosts including, for
  42. example, both personal computers and systems that run variants of
  43. Unix.

  45. The methodology of this working group is to focus entirely on the
  46. alignment of existing, enterprise-specific MIBs for SNMP that are
  47. relevant to its task. The group will work towards its goal by
  48. distillation and generalization of these existing MIBs into a single,
  49. common MIB definition.

  51. Owing to the urgent operational need for managing host systems, this
  52. effort will not be comprehensive in scope. Rather, the MIB produced by
  53. this group will be confined to critical information about hardware and
  54. software configuration, processor and memory use, and data storage
  55. capacities, backup, and use.

  57. Owing to the lack of a well-understood and accepted architecture, the
  58. working group will not address in any way, mechanisms that could be used
  59. to monitor or control the use of licensed software products.

  61. All definitions produced by the group will be consistent with the SNMP
  62. network management framework and all other Internet-standard MIBs for
  63. SNMP.  Wherever possible, the definitions produced will make use of or
  64. align with relevant work in progress with chartered working groups of
  65. the IETF. Also, wherever possible, the working group will take into
  66. consideration pre-existing, stable work produced by other, accredited
  67. standards bodies.
