  29. The next generation of the Internet Protocol (IPv6) is intended to
  30. support Internet traffic for many years into the future by providing
  31. enhancements over the capabilities of the existing IPv4 service. The
  32. IPv6 MIB Working Group is producing specifications for the core
  33. functionality of that service, per recommendations of the IPng Area
  34. Directors as outlined at the July 1994 IETF and in ``The Recommendation
  35. for the IP Next Generation Protocol,'' RFC 1752, January 1995.

  37. The IPv6 MIB Working Group's charter falls into three broad
  38. categories:
  39.  
  40.  - identify changes, if any, to existing standards track
  41.    SNMPv2 document
  42.  
  43.  - potential changes to existing MIBs
  44.  
  45.  - new and additional MIBs that are specific to the IP Next
  46.    Generation Protocol
  47.  
  48. The IPv6 MIB Working Group is initially chartered to identify specific
  49. areas of work and their corresponding work items, within each of the
  50. abovementioned categories.
  51.  
  52. To which end, if changes or additions to the standards track SNMPv2
  53. documents are identified, such changes will be communicated to and
  54. discused with the SNMPv2 Working Group. If, at a certain time, the
  55. SNMPv2 Working Group is inactive, this information will be communicated
  56. to the Network Management Area Director.
  57.  
  58. Specification of a SNMPv2 Textual Convention for IPv6 addresses and the
  59. corresponding Transport Mappings to specify the Transport- Level
  60. address fall into this category. (As a result of an action item from
  61. the IPv6MIB BOF held in December 1994, these have already been
  62. communicated to the SNMPv2 Working Group.)
  63.  
  64. As part of the second category, this working group will identify
  65. existing MIBs that will be impacted, some of which would need
  66. modifications to, at a minimum, include and reflect IPv6 addresses.
  67. Examples of these MIBs are:

  71.  - Evolution of the Interfaces Group of MIB-II
  72.  
  73.  - IP Forwarding Table MIB
  74.  
  75.  - RIP Version 2 MIB Extensions
  76.  
  77.  - OSPF Version 2 MIB
  78.  
  79.  - IPCP MIB

  81. As part of its charter in this category, this working group will
  82. liaison and communicate with relevant working groups where these
  83. identified MIBs were developed. If, at a certain time, these said
  84. working groups are inactive, the appropriate Area Director will be
  85. apprised.

  87. Per the third category, this working group will identify a complete set
  88. of new and additional MIB modules, and their respective organization,
  89. in the following areas:
  90.  
  91.  - IPv6 and associated ICMPv6 protocols
  92.  
  93.  - IPv6 Neighbor Discovery
  94.  
  95.  - IPv6 Tunneling and Mobility
  96.  
  97.  - IPv6 Forwarding and Flows
  98.  
  99.  - IPv6 Network Address Configuration and Resolution
  100.  
  101.  - IPv6 Header Compression
  102.  
  103.  - Network Layer Security Aspects
  104.  
  105. In order to maintain compliance, this working group will liaison with
  106. other working groups within the Internet Area, such as the IPng and
  107. NGTRANS Working Groups.

  110.  Goals and Milestones: 
  111.  
  112.    Apr 95       First meeting. Discuss charter, initial proposals and 
  113.                 discussions of work items in each major category.              
  114.  
  115.    Jun 95       Sunmit an Internet-Draft which lists a set of existing MIBs 
  116.                 that require modifications in order to provide support for 
  117.                 IPv6.                                                          
  118.                 Convey above information to each affected working group chair 
  119.                 and/or Area Director.                                          
  120.  
  121.    Jun 95       Submit to the SNMPv2 Working Group, if applicable, the complete
  122.                 list of changes to existing standards track SNMPv2 documents.  
  123.  
  124.    Jun 95       Submit an Internet-Draft of a Framework and Overview document, 
  125.                 specifying a list of new MIB modules and corresponding 
  126.                 organization.                                                  
  127.  
  128.    Sep 95       Subit final version of Framework and Overview document as an 
  129.                 Informational RFC.                                             
  130.  
  131.    Oct 95       Submit revised charter and request to extend the life of the 
  132.                 working group.
