  11. The User Services WG meeting was devoted to discussion of the effects of
  12. various changes on the USWG.
  13.  
  14. The two key changes were:

  17.   1. Karen Bowers has new and expanded responsibilities at NRI that make
  18.      it difficult for her to continue to devote as much time to the
  19.      USWG, and so she has resigned as chair of the USWG as of the
  20.      Honolulu meeting.  Karen does plan to continue as a member of the
  21.      WG.
  22.      The group expressed its gratitude to Karen for the very
  23.      considerable effort she has put into making the USWG a success.
  24.   2. The re-organization of IETF and the placement of USWG under Craig
  25.      Partridge, the area director of Host Services.  Craig talked about
  26.      his goals for user services, in particular that the USWG continue
  27.      to serve in its role as a focus for user services activities in the
  28.      Internet community and that it would continue to meet regularly to
  29.      discuss common concerns.
  30.      Craig also made it a point to mention that User Services plays a
  31.      vital role in IETF and the Internet as a whole, and that he views
  32.      user services as an important activity under his directorship, and
  33.      distinct from Host Services.  (Based on suggestions from the WG,
  34.      the IESG has agreed to rename the area to "Host-Based and User
  35.      Services" to emphasize that Craig is directing two distinct
  36.      activities).
  37.   3. Martyne Hallgren report that SIGUCCS had voted to fund her services
  38.      proposal for a SIGUCCS committee to examine user services concerns
  39.      from the university level (yeah!).
  40.   4. Joyce Reynolds presented to the group her concept of the FYI Series
  41.      of Notes, a vehicle by which information can be provided to the
  42.      user community.  Joyce will pursue this further and query the
  43.      user-svc mailing list for additional ideas:  appropriate topics,
  44.      volunteers for selected topics, etc.
  45.   5. Karen Bowers strongly encouraged the members of user-svc to take
  46.      the opportunity to get involved in the other working group
  47.      activities as well.  This will provide the kind of "mesh" required
  48.      to ensure those representing user services are aware of the
  49.      technical issues and likewise make contributions in light of user
  50.      requirements.
