  6. Minutes of the WHOIS and Network Information Lookup Service Working
  7. Group (WNILS)

  9. The minutes of July 13, 1993 were unanimously approved without changes.

  12. Status of the WHOIS++ Architecture

  14. Peter Deutsch presented several additions required to the protocol:

  17.    o Inclusion of MIME
  18.    o Remove the counters for the number of responses in short responses
  19.    o Boolean searching
  20.  
  21.  
  22. There was some discussion on the current use of WHOIS++ for URN to URL
  23. conversions as part of the URI Working Group activities.  Peter Deutsch
  24. described the use of domain name service to find a top level WHOIS++
  25. server for URN information.  It was agreed that this work is helpful to
  26. the development of WHOIS++, but unless this work affects the WHOIS++
  27. protocol specifications, further discussions will continue within the
  28. other working groups.

  31. Status of the Distributed WHOIS++ Model - Centroids
  32.  
  33. Chris Weider described changes to the document.
  34.

  36.    o An X-hierarchy field to provide metainformation for intelligent
  37.      traversing of the index service has been added to provide topology,
  38.      geographical and administrative values.  Further extensions are
  39.      needed.
  40.  
  41.    o A mechanism has been added for weighting information for
  42.      attributes.
  43.  
  44.    o Identifiers at the start and end of attribute information have been
  45.      added.
  46.  
  47.    o There is now a way to signify any field or any value in a field in
  48.      a centroid change report.
  49.  
  50.    o A field has been added to designate case sensitivity of string
  51.      values.

  53.    o Simon Spero described the mechanism for searching a centroid tree
  54.      from the bottom, up.
  55.  
  56.    o Features that are still needed include:
  57.  
  58.       -  Need pointers that get from a top level centroid to the bottom
  59.          levels, bypassing intermediate centroids.
  60.  
  61.       -  Replication supported by the ability to pass over the entire
  62.          contents of a centroid, rather than a subset.

  65. Status of WHOIS++ Clients
  66.  
  67. Jim Fullton mentioned the use of WHOIS++ in support of networked
  68. information retrieval, and the type of client development that is
  69. occurring as part of other application development.  He recommended that
  70. the description of clients focus on the work in these areas rather than
  71. white pages interfaces.  Some discussion followed regarding the
  72. continuing need for WHOIS++ as a white pages service.

  75. Status of Recommended Modifications to the WHOIS Protocol
  76.  
  77. Joan Gargano introduced that this document is available as an
  78. Internet-Draft and has not been modified for six months.  Final
  79. submission as an Informational item was delayed pending stabilization of
  80. the architecture document.  It does not appear it will require further
  81. modification due to protocol development.  Discussion focused on the
  82. final status of this paper.

  108. to compile a list of clients and servers and post them to the ietf-wnils
  109. mailing list.  There is still a need for graphical user interfaces to
  110. WHOIS++ as a directory service to provide wide scale testing.

  113. Update of Goals and Milestones

  115. The following goals need revision:

  118.    o 7/31/93 - Submit the WHOIS and Network Information Lookup Service
  119.      Recommendations document as an Internet-Draft.

  121.    o 7/31/93 - Submit the WHOIS++ protocol document as an
  122.      Internet-Draft.

  124.    o 7/31/93 - Submit the ``Architecture of the WHOIS++ Index Service''
  125.      document as a revised Internet-Draft.

  128. It was decided that all three of the working papers will be completed
  129. and submitted as Proposed Standards.  Protocol work will be frozen for
  130. six months to allow for software development.  In the meantime the
  131. working group will discuss the future direction of WNILS. Areas for
  132. discussion include:

  135.    o Developing a role for WHOIS++ as a directory service, potentially
  136.      including work on data elements.
  137.  
  138.    o Continued work on WHOIS++ as a component of other network
  139.      information retrieval tools.
  140.  
  141.    o Closing the working group after completion of the work on the
  142.      current protocols.
