  19. The news.announce hierarchy contains the four moderated newsgroups
  20. news.announce.important, news.announce.newgroups,
  21. news.announce.newusers, and news.announce.conferences.
  22.  
  23. "news.announce.important" is a newsgroup for just what it says it is --
  24. important announcements.  It is intended to be read by everyone on
  25. Usenet, although nobody is forced to subscribe.  To post to
  26. news.announce.important, send mail to the moderator at
  27. "announce@stargate.com".  Some netnews implementations will
  28. automatically mail to the moderator anything posted instead of
  29. attempting to post it directly.  If the message is appropriate, it will
  30. be posted by the moderator; if not, the moderator will suggest a more
  31. appropriate place to post it or a better way to go about the same
  32. goal.

  34. Discussions in news.announce.important are explicitly forbidden, and
  35. the volume of traffic will be kept low enough to keep people from
  36. feeling a need to unsubscribe.  Usenet administrators for each site
  37. should make a point of reading news.announce.important.

  39. The current policy is that news.announce.important submissions must be:
  40.  
  41. (a) short - preferably they should fit on one crt screen, including headers.
  42. (b) important enough to at least have their header shown to everyone on the
  43.     net.  The posting should be more of benefit to the net than to the poster.
  44. (c) not posted to any other newsgroup - news.announce.important by itself is 
  45.     supposed to be sufficient to reach everybody, and nobody should have to
  46.     read an announcement more than once.
  47. (d) signed - the author should be clearly evident.
  48. (e) not commercial, political, or religious in nature.
  49.  
  50. news.announce.newgroups exists for announcements of either the
  51. creation or the consideration of a new newsgroup.  All calls for
  52. votes, calls for discussions, vote results, and creation notices of
  53. all hierarchies should be posted to news.announce.newgroups.
  54. Submissions should be directed to announce-newgroups@uunet.uu.net (or to
  55. your nearest major site).  Followups will be redirected to
  56. news.groups.

  58. Some messages will be repeated every month, in order to reach all
  59. newcomers.  These messages will be placed in news.announce.newusers,
  60. which is also moderated.  This makes it safe for experienced users who
  61. have already read these messages to unsubscribe to
  62. news.announce.newusers without missing anything new in
  63. news.announce.important.  If you aren't familiar with the netnews
  64. guidelines in news.announce.newusers, please read them carefully.
  65. Your understanding of these rules will assure that you don't annoy the
  66. more than 1 million members of the net community (estimated) by
  67. unintentionally abusing the net, and will help you get more value from
  68. the net.

  70. news.announce.conference is for announcements of conference programs,
  71. calls for papers, and things of that kind.  Submissions should be
  72. directed to nac@tekbspa.tss.com.  Please keep Subject lines
  73. informative; if space permits, mention the topic and location there,
  74. and avoid acronyms unless very widely known.
