POV : Haze rising above the filthy streets of an american city in the early
60's. The camera pans down to show the entrane to a games arcade, promising
computer graphics as yet unseen before by human eye on a badley written sign.
A queue has formed outside. Amoungst those gathered are a band of greesy
haired teenagers. They are gangly and spotty. They are, the GAMERS.
Voice Over: The year is 1963. A spate of badley written coin-op games
machines has hit down town New York. Amongst them is the much awaided game 3D
Tanks. A Vector battle tank game where the object is to drive round, and
destory other tanks.
[Fade]
POV : A Darkened, ebony room. Black except for the light from a monitor
placed in the corner of the room on a shelf above a pine table. A figure
crouched over the table blocks out much of the light. On the work surface is
a small keyboard. A small green acorn is emblasoned on the side of the
computer. We draw closer. The figure screams, smashes a palm onto the
surface. We close in on the screen. The words 'Game Over' are flashing
on the screen. They fade. Black
Voice Over : Now, 33 years later, the phenomenon has reoccured. 3D Tanks has
been re-releasd as TDT, the ultimate in overhead games, multiplayer option,
and serious AI for enemy tanks. You've read the story, seen the film, now
play the game.

Background
-oOOOOOOo-
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....
Episode 43
Having beaten the rebels back to their final holdout, the new Emperor is
relaxing in front of a fire on which the remaining embers of the last Jedi
are smouldering. The Emperor rubs his hands together. Blue fire sparks from
them lending new life to the dying fire.
The great doors to the Emperors' private chambers are flung open and a figure
cloaked in black strides in. A light saber flicks to his hands and in a
moment he is leaning over the emperor, an evil glint in his eye, telling of a
vengence so great that it had been carried over since episode 40.
"IT IS TIME?"
"Yes Emperor. It is time."
"OK THEN, BUT I WORN YOU, I'VE BEEN PRACTICING."
What to do, a Quick Guide!
-oOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo-
Ok, the basic idea is to shoot the other tanks and drive around so you don't
get shot. The tanks drive more like tanks than cars ie they can rotate on the
spot. You can alter or see what the keys are from the main menu.
You pick up tokens by running over them. All of the tokens do you good apart
from the X which halves your health. There is no colision detectment between
the tanks which means you can run through each other. Up to 4 people can play
at a time, or you can play a 1 player game against the computer.
You can access the options screen while playing the game by pressing O.
Apart from that, the rest should be obvious, so you can play the game now.
However it may be worth your while to look down to find out what the tokens
stand for!
tokens
-oOOo-
To be read in the style of "A is for Apple".
L is for life. It gives you more health.
P is for power. It makes your shells more powerful.
X is for Expload. It removes half of your remaining health
T is for teleport. It makes you jump position.
S is for score. Which is only useful if you are on 1 player.
R is for random. It picks one of the above.
Graphix Level
-oOOOOOOOOOo-
On the options menum, the animation level can be changed between Smooth,
Normal, and rough. Basically these corespond to frame rates. Which is how
often the screen is updated, and how jerky the animation.
Animation Type Frames/Second Jerkyness
Smooth 50 None
Normal 25 Not really
Rough 12 Still playable
The game works best in normal or smooth, however, if you have anything below
an ARM3, then it would be best if you used rough. I myself have an A3010
(ARM250) so don't worry as it has been well tested at this speed. RISCPC (and
A7000) owners will probabley find that it runs very well in Smooth, but at
high resolution modes, you may find that slow down occurs.
If slowdown occurs, ie the game suddenly slows, (this will be obvious in
smooth or normal because it will get about 1/2 as slow) then press 'O' to
jump to the options screen, and change the graphics level down, or change
some of the options to free up your processor. Or, if the worst comes to the
worst, the quit the game, and change the resolution down on the wimp task.
Spin Objects
-oOOOOOOOOo-
You can make the computer spin many of the objects in the game, including
the shells and the tokens. This makes it look a lot nicer! but it also eats
up processor time and so may slow the game down. Most noticably, spinning the
shells means that fast routines cannot be used and so a lot of spinning
shells is likely to slow the computer down unless you make sure that your
processor can handle it. If you are in the middle of a game, then you can of
course go to the options screen, by pressing 'O' and change it so that your
shells don't spin.
Resolutions
-oOOOOOOOo-
TDT has been written so that it can run in many different resolutions, each
with their own processor costs, ie some may cause the game to run slower if
your processor isn't fast enough. But, the higher the resolution, the better
defined the graphics are, ie they aren't blocky when run in a high res mode,
but they will be if you run them in a low res mode.
High Res. : Mode 27, Very High Processor Cost.
VGA Medium res. : Mode 48, High Processor Cost.
Medium res. : Mode 12, Medium Processor Cost.
Low res. : Mode 9, Low Proccessor Cost.
The High res and VGA Medium resolution modes are only supported by high res
monitors. The VGA modes also have to be soft loaded in if they are not in
memory. The high res and VGA modes will be displayed as full screen modes
(not letterbox modes) on high res monitors.
It is unlikely that an ARM2 computer will be able to run the game at any
speed unless it is using a low res mode. ARM250's will be able to use a
medium res mode but only if you use rough graphics. However, trial and error
is the key here, and you should decided for yourself what works best for your
computer.
eg My A3010 (ARM250) can run the game using Smooth in a medium res mode, but
only if there are only two tanks on the screen, the shells don't spin, they
don't fire much AND they are fairly close together. Get the picture!
Keys
-oo-
Hmm, I don't know why you're reading this. The keys can be read and altered
from the main menu using the "Change Keys" menu. You can also use a joystick
if you have one, a megadrive joypad appears to work too, use 'B' to fire.
Credits

All game code and graphics were done by me, Owain Cole. (And you don't know
how bl**dy long it took me. Admittedly, there were hardly any graphics to do
since it's all vector line graphics!)

Testing:
Various members of my school. And me of course. In fact I tested most of it.
Did nobody help me do anything at all?

And I didn't write the Stasis Module.. um it's PD though I think!

Well thank god somebody else did some work on this apart from me. Admittedly
I did help Chris write this. Hmmm I think I should give up since nobody
appears to be capable of helping me.
Oh yeah, thanks to Niv for suggesting the tokens. (Yeah Cheers... No really.
Don't make too much work for me or anything!)
Hi's 'n' general greets

Hmmm, reading this a couple of months later, it appears that I have missed my
address off.

Or it's probably far easier if you ring:
01684 294325 and ask for Owain (pronounced O-Wain)
I probably won't be there, but les parents can give you a number to call
probabley!
E-mail:
I haven't got an e-mail address, but if you write to Nathan Atkinson who is
also in VOTI, then he'll get it to me somehow. Please make sure you say to
whom you are writing at the top!
