Backdrops
~~~~~~~~~
created by
James A. Mills
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you know about the backdrop utility on your Acorn? I didn't until I
bothered to read the user manual. Once you have got the hang of it, it is
very easy to use. The sprite files supplied are just examples of backdrops
that can be created.
Using the backdrops
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Drag the sprite file using select onto the pinboard. Then click manu over the
sprite file icon. Move the mouse down to "Make backdrop" and move the mouse
to the right to obtain a sub-menu. For all the files included, choose the
"Tile" option. This gives the best effects. The "Scaled" option gives you an
enlarged copy. The "Centre" option gives you a copy that is of the original
size in the centre of the screen.
The supplied backdrops
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The names of the files are quite obvious, but I will give you a brief
description anyway.
Brickwall - Use this backdrop when you have a lot of icons on the pinboard.
Then you'll feel like a fly poster.
Cables - Cables linking to different coloured cables. Who knows what they
are conducting.
GB_Flag - Can be made into a backdrop either by using the "scaled" or
"tiled" options. It looks brilliant both ways.
G_Cross - Based on the George Cross.
Jam - Are you sweet enough? This gives you pots of jam on the screen.
Loo_Roll - Count the toilet rolls on the screen.
Magic_Eye - Can you see anything? This was created purely by chance. Contact
me if you can see anything.
Money - Dream of riches as you look at all the ú100 notes.
Music - Look at the notes across your screen.
Sick_Man - A picture of a man vomitting (lovely!!!)
Symmetry - A symmetrical pattern.
Tablecloth - Red diagonal stripes on a white background.
Telephone - See all the telephones on the screen.
Tulip - It's spring all year round.
V_Cross - Based on the Victoria Cross.
No hard drive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The computer does need to know the information from the sprite file.
Therefore, if you do not have a hard drive like myself, you may find that you
have to keep inserting the disc, especially after running a single task
application. A way to avoid this problem is to create a RAM disc as explained
in your user manual. Then copy the sprite file into the RAM disc. Then copy
the file from the RAM disc onto the pinboard and then make the backdrop.
That's all
~~~~~~~~~~
Well that's all I have got to say. If you have any difficulties with creating
backdrops, consult your user manual.
I hope that these examples will give you some inspirsation. I created all
these images on an A3010, so anybody with some imagination can create them.
