- Help file for !Joiner
- ---------------------
-
- !Joiner is not Public Domain - it is ⌐ David Holden 1996, and is a part
- of the !Chopper Shareware package. It may not be used or distributed
- other than as a part of this package or by being placed on a disc of
- chopped files by a registered user of !Chopper.
-
- !Chopper is a Shareware package which can split up very large files onto
- a number of floppy discs for transport between computers. Although the
- main program is intended to be run on Acorn machines there are secondary
- programs which run on the PC and which can be used to transport large
- files between PCs and Acorns. For more details on the !Chopper package
- contact me at the address at the end of this file.

- Using !Joiner
- -------------
- !Joiner is used to join together files which have been split up with
- !Chopper because they are too big to fit on a single floppy disc. Its
- main purpose is to make it easy to distribute very large files on floppy
- discs so that the recipient can join them up very easily without needing
- to have a copy of the complete !Chopper program
-
- It is incredibly easy to use. You should have found !Joiner on a floppy
- disc on which there is at least one other file called <something>01.
- This is the first file of the batch you are going to join together.
-
- Put the disc containing !Joiner and the first file into floppy drive :0.
- All you have to do is double-click on !Joiner and a window will open in
- the centre of the screen. At the top of this window you will see the
- name of the file to be joined up (without the '01' suffix). If you want
- to alter this you can do so. At the botton right hand corner of this
- window is a small plinth with the !Joiner icon (a hammer and nails) on
- it. Open a directory viewer on your hard disc where you want to put the
- joined-up file and just drag this icon to it. As soon as you do this
- !Joiner will copy the first part of the file from the floppy disc to
- your hard disc. When the first part is done it will ask you to insert
- the disc with the next part of the file. When this happens just take out
- the first disc and put in the next - you don't have to click on
- anything, as soon as the disc is placed in the drive !Joiner will add
- that sectuon of the file to those already on your hard disc.
-
- !Joiner doesn't know how many files files there are to be joined, so
- when you have finished just close the window. That's all there is to it.
-
- If you put the wrong disc in the drive then !Joiner will tell you. If
- this happens close the Error window BEFORE you change the disc,
- otherwise !Joiner won't know that the disc has been changed and you'll
- have to take it out of the drive and put it in again.
-
- You need not read the next section if you are just joining up files
- distributed on floppy disc - this is additional information mainly
- intended for people who use the !Chopper package.

- Notes
- -----
- If the files to be joined are on a Acorn format disc (640K, 800K or
- 1.6Mb) then they must have a filename ending in a two digit suffix
- starting at 01 and increasing. If they are on DOS format discs (720K or
- 1.44Mb) then they must have a file extension in the same format, ie.
- starting at .01. No other type of files can be joined by this simple
- program, although the complete !Chopper application can join up any
- files.
-
- On a DOS format disc this obviously means that the normal file extension
- is lost and replaced by the number, so another strategy is used. If
- there is a file on the disc called FILETYPE then the file extension of
- that file is the same as that of the original. This is the format that
- is used when files are split up by !Chopper. In the !Joiner application
- directory is a textfile called DOS_Tran. This consistes of a list of DOS
- file extensions and equivalent Acorn filetypes. If the DOS extension is
- found in this table then the Acorn filetype specified will be used. You
- can easily add to this list by loading the file into ant text editor.
-
- !Joiner will normally only be used to join up files which have been
- split up onto floppy discs by !Chopper. It therefore makes assumptions
- about the files it is going to join. Firstly it assumes that it is on
- the same disc and in the same directory as the files it is joining, as
- would normally be the case with a floppy disc, because you would put a
- copy of !Joiner on the first disc of the set of split files. Secondly it
- assumes that the first file will have a name ending in 01, the second
- 02, and so on, as would normally be done by !Chopper. When it is run it
- therefore looks in the same directory as it finds itself for *any* file
- with a name ending in 01 and assumes that that is the first file of the
- set to be joined. It will expect all subsequent files to be on the same
- drive and directory.
-
- Obviously this will normally be ADFS::0.$ and so !Joiner will prompt for
- disc changes between files. However, !Joiner can be run from a hard
- disc. As before it will look in the directory it has been placed in for
- a file with a name ending in 01, but if the disc it is on is bigger than
- 8Mb it will assume that it is being run from a hard disc and will NOT
- prompt for disc changes but just join up all the files it finds with the
- same name as the first file. When it has run out of files it will stop
- with a message telling you it has finished.
-
- It is not likely that anyone would actually want to use !Joiner in this
- way, it is mainly intended for testing purposes.
-
- It is possible to force !Joiner to load the files from floppy disc even
- though !Joiner is being run from a hard disc itself. If you hold down
- the left ALT key when you run !Joiner it will ignore its own location
- and look on ADFS::0.$ for the files. Again this is mainly intended to be
- used when testing.
