In January-February 1991 I created a complex and popular Type 1 PostScript font which contained over 100 quite detailed picture images from public domain sources and modestly called it DavysDingbats, after myself. I followed that with an even more complex collection called DavysOtherDingbats, which contains popular cartoon characters as well as more public domain printer ornaments. Both fonts work great on my computer with ATM (I have 4 megs) and on my NEC printer (3 megs). Other users contacted me with problems they've had printing from the latter font and with ATM. In both cases the problems seemed to be with memory; the problem characters had lots and lots of Bezier control points (Fontographer calls them BCP's, as if you cared), and the printers cited had only 1.5 or 2 megs of RAM. As a way to work around these problems, I've split the font up into four fonts, keeping the original keyboard positions of the characters: hence, in this archive you will find:
DavysOtherDingbatsRegular -- the 47 keys of the regular keyboard - no shift or option. Find Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes characters here, as well as random attention-getters.
DavysOtherDingbatsShift -- the 47 keys of the regular keyboard with the shift key depressed. Find more of the same here, including some cows.
DavysOtherDingbatsOption -- 37 of the keys of the regular keyboard with the option key depressed. Find musical instrument silhouettes, Stravinsky, Milton Babbitt, Bart, Michelangelo, and other random characters here.
In April 1991 these fonts were converted to TrueType¬ format with FontMonger from Ares Software (a truly wonderful program, and so inexpensive). The original conditions apply:
These three fonts are absolutely free. You can make unlimited copies and give them out as long as you include all the files you got, including the one you're reading. You may NOT, under any conditions whatsoever, sell this font; note that several of the images are of copyrighted characters. Therefore it makes sense that you can use the cartoon characters in this font for your own personal use, but you may not sell anything created with them without obtaining permission of the copyright holders. And you may not, not, not, NOT sell any disk with this font on it for profit.
