PRONUNCIATION NOTES
We assume that users already have a basic command
of Spanish. If not, get one before you run around
spouting slang. The distributors of THE GUIDE TO
MEXICAN SLANG disseminate materials for "Friendly
Foreign Language Learning," including basic
Spanish.
Ordering DOS CHELAS instead of DOS
CERVEZAS is no big deal, and can give you the
panache you want but speaking more slang than
Spanish will only make you look like an idiot.
Likewise, we assume you are familiar with Spanish
pronunciation and are aware of gender endings. (If
guys are CHAVOS, chicks are CHAVAS, etc.)
As far as pronunciation, remember:
"ñ" is pronounced as "ny" in "canyon"
"ll" is pronounced as "y"
"J" is always pronounced as "h"
"h" is always silent,
an initial "g" is pronounced as "h," unless
followed by "u," in which case the diphthong is
pronounced almost like "w"
If a word ends in "l" or "r" it is accented on the
last syllable. All other words are accented on the
second to last syllable unless another syllable
bears an accent mark.
Vowels are simple, pure, and always pronounced the
same:
a--as in "ah" or "mama"
e--like the long "a" in "make" or "way"
i--like the long "e" in "feel" or "see"
o--as in "old" or "no"
u--without the initial "y" sound, as in "kudos" or
"rude"
Have fun!
