- I found myself almost never using the Control Panel Desk Accessory
- (DA). It was fairly large (for a DA), and it took up not one but
- two "slots," one for itself and one for "Install Printer." Plus,
- once I set the colors and other choices to my personal
- preferences, I would rarely even look at it. However, if it
- wasn't on the boot disk, you didn't get many of the "defaults"
- that are saved in the DESKTOP.INF file (resolution, icon and
- window arrangement, and any program installation information is
- taken care of by GEM itself, using the DESKTOP.INF file)
-
- Preferences set by the Control Panel include:
-
- RS-232 settings (well, actually the VT-52 Emulator sets these)
- Printer settings
- Color choices
- Mouse double-click speed
- Keyclick on/off
- Console bell on/off
- Keyboard delay time
- Keyboard repeat rate
-
- So, I wrote The ROCP. It's pretty simple - upon boot-up it gets
- information from GEM about your system defaults stored in the
- DESKTOP.INF file, and sets up all of your preferences listed
- above. It will also be listed in the "Desk" menu, so that if you
- run across one of those "misbehaving" programs that doesn't reset
- your colors and/or other preferences after exiting to the desktop,
- just pull it down `nd The ROCP will fix you right up. One thing
- The ROCP does do "better" that Atari's Control Panel is "sluggish"
- about is setting the system clock from the keyboard clock right at
- boot up. This will only help you if you've got a mod to
- "remember" the time and date (like the NonSTop Clock) that doesn't
- require special software to read the time/date. If you've got
- one, you're all set. Also, The ROCP works properly in any
- resolution.
-
- I'm happy to report that the two known bugs in 0.3, i.e. not
- setting the double-click speed on boot up and "misbehaving" with
- Timeworks' Word Writer ST (although I'm STILL convinced something
- strange is going on with that program!) have been fixed in this
- release. As an added "feature," The ROCP will "automatically"
- reset your prefs after exiting a GEM application. Many thanks to
- Bob Breum, who contacted me through CompuServe, for his
- suggestions on implementing these fixes.
-
- There were two changes in 0.7 from 0.6. One is that there can no
- longer be an error in reading the DESKTOP.INF file. The shell
- environment is gotten directly from GEM now, and GEM will
- manufacture a default "DESKTOP.INF" if none exists. A big
- thank you to Steve Reed, who contacted me through GENIE, for this
- suggestion. The other change is cosmetic - I removed the dialog
- box and replaced it with an alert box for over 2K savings. The dialog
- box was interesting, and I worked hard on it. However, I think it's
- more important for a desk accessory to be compact.
-
- The only change in 0.8 from 0.7 is cosmetic - the alert box now
- looks OK in low resolution. Actually, it's a whole different alert
- message. I don't think the person who implemented alert boxes at
- Digital Research ever looked at low res!
-
- This program is copyrighted, but free. Please notify me if you
- have any suggestions, bugs, etc. I hope you'll enjoy The ReadOnly
- Control Panel, and the extra DA slot/extra memory it gives you.
