  3.   of all known packers. Well, here it is!

  7.   This is a list of all known (to me) executable program packers.
  8.   
  9.   Please help me maintain this list and report any errors, missing
  10.   information and new versions as soon as possible! Thanks!

  16.  R = creates relocatable files
  17.      (x=yes, blank=no, ?=don't know)

  19.  M = unpacking routine accesses dangerous memory areas, such as just
  20.      below $78000 - usually to copy the unpacking routine there.
  21.        
  22.      7 = uses area below $78000 (very dangerous! avoid!)
  23.      s = uses area below screen memory (a little risky)
  24.      g = uses gemdos buffer area (dangerous!)
  25.      blank = no 
  26.  
  27.      Most unpacking routines however DO access memory that doesn't belong
  28.      to them, which is after the data segment and is needed for the
  29.      decompression (as a buffer). This is not very dangerous though.

  31.  S = Packer is not programmed safely i.e. has problems with new TOS or
  32.      harddisks, ACC's etc.

  72.  MORE INFORMATION:

  74.  (atomic): I only have one packed file, please, if you have this packer
  75.            send it to me!!
  76.  
  77.    (auto): All these packers crash (when packing), so I can't test if
  78.            the files created can be uncompressed. Please try that for 
  79.            me if you can...
  80.            Automation 2.31 almost the same as LSD packer and JEK Packers...
  81.            Automation 2.4 (actually Crown Of Creation Compacter v2.4)
  82.            packed programs crash on TOS 2.05 when unpacked.

  84.     (bk3): The Bytekiller v3.0 by M.Coates does not use a correct unpacking
  85.            routine, it can't unpack non-relocatable programs. This is the
  86.            main reason it is not supported.
  87.  
  88.    (DCSq): I WILL NOT SUPPORT THAT ONE!!! (Spaghetti-code!! looks like
  89.            a compiled-C unpacking routine!)
  90.            Strangely, some programs packed with DC Squish DO unpack!
  91.             
  92.   (mcacr): This one crashes all the time (TOS 2.05), if you can use it,
  93.            please tell me if it works...
  94.            Actually, not even programs packed with MCA Crunch will unpack
  95.            and run on TOS 2.05!!!
  96.  
  97.  (pack20): contains very stupid code, which would have to be checked for
  98.            separately, use the unpack.tos supplied with it instead!!
  99.            Also, this one doesn't like the fastload/TT bits... You must
  100.            remove those before packing with removsym.prg.
  101.  
  102.    (pp19): Crashes all the time too. Should be able to unpack though...
  103.            Special message to the Pompey Pirates: GEM may have some bugs, 
  104.            but it's not GEM's fault if you don't know how to use it...
  105.            Try to write a serious TOS-version-independant program!
  106.  
  107.    (jek1): The JEK Packers 1.1 - 1.4 and the LSD Packer are very much 
  108.            alike... 
  109.  
  110.     (jam): The JAM Packers v3.0 are now supported too. However, with TOS
  111.            2.05 the compressed files can not be loaded from the desktop,
  112.            only if uncompressed first with Naughty!!
  113.            Also, the JAM-packer 3.0 pre-release V2-compressed programs
  114.            cannot be unpacked with Naughty (at least the ones I tested)
  115.            as it seems because of a bug in the packer.
