  4. 1. Features
  5.  
  6. This Packer can compress executable programs, and with the aid of a
  7. small imbedded routine, unpack and run the program when called.  A
  8. packed program will consequently behave the same as a non-packed one.
  9. Packer and Unpacker have been specially optimized for speed; Unpacker
  10. can unpack at a rate of 140 KB/sec., while the Packer compares
  11. favorably with most archiving programs with regards to speed and
  12. codelength.
  13.  
  14. The files which Program packer generates are compatible with LHARC.
  15. The archived files may be read with any version of LHARC. Starting
  16. with version LZH11304 of LHARC, the packed programs may even be
  17. unpacked. (Theoretically it should be possible to use any of the older
  18. versions to do this also, but a small programming error has prevented
  19. this untill I fixed it.)

  21. 2. Compression of programs
  22.  
  23. The packing of programs is accomplished by double clicking on 
  24. PFXPAC.TTP and entering original and target names. Original and target
  25. names may be identical, if you have LZH11304 or yet another copy of
  26. the unpacked program.
  27.  
  28. Not all programs are packable, therefore it behooves you test the 
  29. packed program immediately.  In practice, there are very few programs
  30. which cannot be packed (I don't have even one such on my disk).
  31.  
  32. An LHARC compatible archive is generated (but which is of course 
  33. executable) and since the full path must get stripped, you must copy
  34. PFXPAK.TTP into the directory where the program to be compressed is.
  35. NOTE:  (please see Genie file #17926 PFXSHELL.LZH BY D.HELMS, ATARI 
  36. LIB. 2 for an easy to use shell to handle packing more easily)

  38. Example: to compress the program LHARC.TTP in place, type the 
  39. following after double clicking on PFXPAK.TTP :

  43. 3. Uncompressing of programs
  44.  
  45. The extension of a commpressed program must be changed to .LZH, so 
  46. that   LHARC does not corrupt its own archive. After that you can
  47. unpack it just like any other .LZH Archive.  In order to unpack
  48. LHARC.TTP do the following:
  49.  
  50.   1. Click once on LHARC.TTP.  2. Select "show info" and alter the 
  51. filename extension.  3.Double click on LHARC.TTP.  4. Enter "X LHARC".

  55. PFXPAK may be copied and distributed freely, as long as all the files 
  56. are included.  IF YOU HAVE THE INTENTION OF DELETING THIS README FILE
  57. IN ORDER TO SAVE SPACE, YOU CAN RE-EXTRACT IT FROM THE PFXPAC.LZH FILE
  58. USING LHARC BEFORE PASSING THE FILES ON TO SOMEONE ELSE.

  63. The registered version of Programmpacker has the following features:
  64.  
  65.    - Programs may be selected via the File-Selector box.  - The
  66.    registered version can Group(?) all programs in one folder or and
  67.    even pack all executable programs with only one invocation.  -
  68.    Utilities are included to facillitate the inclusion of Intoductory
  69.    programs with a main program so that the introduction may be read
  70.    upon that program's execution.
