  15.      I recently downloaded a small utility program that claimed to 
  16. compress a "executable" file(s) to that on the level of the  LHARC 
  17. (LZH) compression method.  After compression,  you then could just 
  18. "double  click"  on  that  file from  the  desktop  and  it  would 
  19. "quickly" (understatement) decompress in memory and run as normal. 
  20. Well  it  worked as advertised!  I then began to compress  ALL  my 
  21. programs and I saved an amazing amount of disk space!
  22.  
  23.      The  only drawback (albeit small,  GEM really makes a  person 
  24. lazy),  was that you had to type in the name of the file and  path 
  25. you  wished  to compress/uncompress(yes it  will  decompress  them 
  26. also) and the path and compressed/decompressed file name.
  27.  
  28.      To  make  a short story shorter,  I wrote this  little  shell 
  29. program that provides you with a fileselector to find the file you 
  30. wish to compress and also one to place the file where you want  it 
  31. with  it's  compressed  filename.  The  reason  I  say  compressed 
  32. filename is the it is recommended that the name be different after 
  33. compression  to avoid problems with overwriting  the  original(and 
  34. losing  it) if there is a problem with compression.  As  I  stated 
  35. before,  ALL  of  * MY * files(PRG's) compressed and  ran  without 
  36. problem, but most ACC's have some problems, so be careful!

  39.      Instructions:
  40.  
  41. 1.  Make  sure  PFXPAK.TTP and PFXSHELL.RSC are in the same directory 
  42.     (folder  or whatever) that PFXSHELL.PRG is in.
  43. 2.  Run PFXSHELL.PRG
  44.      (a)  PFXSHELL(1.2) now shows the MAX file size that can  be                     
  45.           compressed/decompressed on your particular system.
  46.           PFXPAK.TTP will only allow file sizes up to the  amount 
  47.           of free memory that you have available after all of your 
  48.           auto run prg's,ACC's and RAMDISKS.
  49.      (b)   If you have LARGE files(larger than free  memory)  that 
  50.            you wish to compress,  clear out ALL auto  run  prg's, 
  51.            ACC's and RAMDISKS!
  52. 3.  Select  operation:  "PACK" to  compress  a  file,  "UNPACK"  to
  53.     uncompress a PFXPAKed file or "QUIT" to quit the program.
  54.     (a).  I  took the liberty of giving the "packed" program(s)  a 
  55.            ".APP"  extender(for A Packed Program)  which  you  can 
  56.            change  at time of packing or on the  desktop.  I  also 
  57.            chose   the  ".UPP"   extender   for   unpacking(guess 
  58.            why<grin>).

  62.      Now of course you know this is "Shareware".  If you like this 
  63. program  and would like to see more high quality programs,  buy  a 
  64. "Share"  of  Atari stock tomorrow(that way,  there will  still  be 
  65. Atari computers around). Heck it's only about 2 bucks a pop, thats 
  66. a lot cheaper that most "Shareware" requests, is it not?
