Documents for Cosmic Conquest Demo II

The demonstration version of Cosmic Conquest differs from the full
version in these respects:
* It's free
* The editor isn't provided
* It doesn't allow multiple games or configuration of the
computer players
* You're limited to 10 planets on your map.
Our hope in providing this demo version of the game is, obviously, for
you to see that you and your users enjoy it so much that you want to
buy the full version.

Read CC_SYSOP.DOC to familiarize yourself with the game and to get a
taste of the features not included with the demo, particularly the
editor for maps, players, multiple games and configurations.
On the demo version, you're not allowed to set a pathname for your
game files. Therefore, CC_DEMO.MAP, CC.DOC, CC_HELP.DOC and
CC_LESSN.DOC must be in your BBS folder -- check out the sysop docs
for a rather hairy explanation of this. If you're too impatient, just
put the .MAP file in the same directory as the BBS and then init the
game for your BBS (the sysop docs talk about setting up the game for
FoReM and Express! BBSs). Run the game from the BBS. If it tells you
it can't find CC_DEMO.MAP, you know your BBS changes directories.
You'll have to find a way to make the BBS point back to the folder you
want the game in, which is easy with Express!, or find out what
directory it wants and put the game there.
Remember, the full version is more convenient because it allows
pathnames when you configure multiple games. You can run the demo
while you have the regular game running, as long as you have a CC.CNF
file pointing to the other .MAP files.
While you'll notice these differences, the players will only notice
they're limited to 10 planets. The game is full-featured, from their
point of view, which means they'll find out if they like the game or
not. The first demo didn't actually carry out commands, and it had a
bug regarding the planet slayers (not intentional).
We've beta-tested the game in Stillwater since November 1988, and in
Seattle since May 1989 and are as certain as we can be we have all the
crashes worked out of the system.
